Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Most small modded Minecraft servers cost about $7.50–$15 per month in 2026. A medium server running a heavier pack usually needs 8–12GB of RAM and costs roughly $15–$20 monthly. Large kitchen-sink packs commonly move to 16–20GB tiers priced around $20–$25 per month. If your group plays only occasionally, hourly hosting at about $0.07–$0.09 can be cheaper than paying for a server that runs continuously.
Those figures are hosting-plan snapshots checked in 2026, not guaranteed prices. Your final bill depends on the modpack, player count, CPU performance, storage, backups, location, taxes and whether the server stays online 24/7. Self-hosting can remove the monthly hosting invoice, but its real cost comes from electricity, hardware, internet service and your time.

| Use case | Typical RAM | Planning price | What it usually covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small private group (about 2–6 players) | 4–6GB | $7.50–$15/month; regional plans from €6.47/month | Light Fabric, Forge, Quilt or NeoForge packs, a modest world and a few simultaneous players |
| Medium group (about 6–15 players) | 8–12GB | About $15–$20/month in the published examples | Medium Forge or Fabric packs, automation, several dimensions and room for world generation |
| Large or kitchen-sink pack (about 10–25 players) | 16–20GB or more | About $20–$25/month in the published examples | Large mod collections, extensive automation, frequent exploration and a larger active community |
| Large community | 24GB may be necessary | Not stated as a universal price | Several concurrent regions, high view distance or a pack whose developer recommends more memory |
Player counts are approximate planning bands, not hard limits. A five-player server with a demanding automation pack can need more memory than a ten-player server using a light pack. Start with the pack’s own recommendation, then leave headroom for chunk generation and future additions.

| Campfire Hosting pay-as-you-go | $0.07–$0.09/hour for 6–8GB tiers | Hourly billing for servers that are not needed continuously |
These examples show why quoting one “average” price is misleading. One provider’s $15 tier supplies 6GB, while another’s supplies 12GB. Compare the resources and service terms, not only the number beside the dollar sign.
How much RAM does a modded Minecraft server need?
Light packs: 4–6GB
A 4–6GB plan is a sensible starting point for a small private group running a light Fabric or Forge pack. It can be enough for roughly two to six players when the pack is modest, the view distance is reasonable and the server is not generating unexplored terrain for everyone at once. Keep several hundred megabytes free rather than allocating every advertised gigabyte to Java.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMedium packs: 8–12GB
Plan on 8–12GB when the pack adds many machines, dimensions, mobs or world-generation systems. This is the common range for a six-to-15-player server and for packs in the medium Forge, Create or Vault Hunters category. World generation, automated farms and simultaneous exploration can create short memory spikes, so a plan that is barely sufficient at launch may become unstable as the world grows.
Heavy packs: 16–20GB
All-the-Mods-style or other kitchen-sink packs often need 16–20GB. SudoSecurity’s published sizing maps its kitchen-sink tier to 20GB and its table places the largest packs at 16GB. A large community may need 24GB, but that is a sizing target rather than a universal price point. More RAM cannot compensate for a weak CPU or an inefficient mod configuration.

RAM is not the whole specification
Advertised memory is only the first filter. Modded Minecraft is sensitive to single-thread CPU performance because the main server tick, entity processing and many world tasks depend heavily on one thread. Two hosts offering 8GB can perform very differently. Ask which CPU generation or per-core performance the plan uses, whether CPU time is shared, and whether the provider throttles busy servers.
What does a 10-player modded server cost?
For ten concurrent players, budget about $15–$20 per month as a starting point when the pack is medium in complexity and you choose 8–12GB. A light pack may run on a $7.50–$15 plan, while a demanding kitchen-sink pack can require $20–$25 for 16–20GB. Ten players alone do not determine the tier: chunk-generation rate, redstone and automation, mob counts, dimensions, simulation distance and the number of players exploring separate areas matter just as much.
Leave capacity for peak behavior. If ten people join after a fresh wipe and travel in different directions, the server may generate thousands of new chunks in a short period. Pregenerating the world can make play smoother, but it consumes storage and setup time and may require a larger temporary memory or CPU margin.
When hourly hosting is cheaper
Hourly billing is useful for a server that runs only during scheduled sessions. At $0.07–$0.09 per hour, 100 hours in a month would cost approximately $7–$9 before any taxes or additional fees. At 200 hours, the same range is about $14–$18. A continuously running 720-hour month would be approximately $50.40–$64.80, so a monthly plan is normally cheaper for an always-on world.

Calculate your own break-even point with:
monthly hourly cost = hourly rate × hours the server is powered on
Then compare that result with a monthly plan offering similar RAM and CPU capacity. Check whether the host bills only while the instance is running, whether storage continues to incur a charge when stopped, and whether automatic sleep or wake features are available. The published hourly figures cover 6–8GB tiers; do not assume that a 16–20GB server has the same rate.
What makes the bill higher or lower?
Modpack size and world activity
Every additional mod is not equally expensive. Dimensions, terrain generators, large structure systems, chunk loaders, logistics networks and heavily automated farms can consume substantially more CPU and memory than cosmetic mods. A server that hosts one established base may need less capacity than a smaller group constantly exploring new terrain.
CPU quality
Look for clear information about single-thread performance, processor model, dedicated versus shared vCPU time and any CPU limits. A plan with more RAM but a slow or oversubscribed processor can still produce lag. Ask how the host handles sustained 100% main-thread usage and whether you can upgrade CPU resources separately from RAM.

Storage and backups
NVMe storage improves startup, saving and chunk-loading behavior compared with slower disks. Storage capacity also matters: the world, player data, logs, crash reports, mod files and backups all occupy space. A 32GB allocation may be fine for a small new world but can become restrictive after months of exploration. Determine how many automated backups are retained, whether backup storage counts against your quota and whether you can download a backup before changing hosts.
Recommended Free Tools
Protection, support and management
DDoS filtering, a control panel, one-click loader installation, technician assistance and scheduled backups can be worth paying for when you do not want to administer Linux, Java or firewall rules yourself. Confirm which features are included. A low headline price can rise after adding a backup package, a dedicated address, extra storage or priority support.
Location, currency and taxes
Choose a region close to most players to reduce latency, but check that the desired pack and version are available there. The examples above mix US dollars and euros; exchange rates, VAT or sales tax and payment-method fees can change the amount charged. A promotional monthly price may also require a particular billing term, so read the renewal price before committing.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
There is no honest universal 2026 self-hosting price without location and hardware assumptions. A modern desktop that is already powered on for other tasks may add relatively little incremental electricity, while buying a machine solely for Minecraft can take years to offset against a $10–$25 monthly plan. A home connection behind carrier-grade NAT may require a tunnel or another reachability solution. Many residential connections also have upload limits or terms that make continuous hosting impractical.
Self-hosting gives you control over Java flags, backups, mod versions and network rules, but you are responsible for operating-system updates, firewall configuration, crash recovery, off-site backups and keeping the server online. Hosted plans trade some control for a predictable bill and a support path.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the exact pack and loader. Record the Minecraft version, whether it uses Fabric, Forge, Quilt or NeoForge, and the pack creator’s RAM recommendation.
- Estimate peak players. Use the number online at the busiest session, not the average weekly count. Add headroom if players will explore separately.
- Choose a memory tier with margin. Start near 4–6GB for a light private pack, 8–12GB for a medium pack and 16–20GB for a kitchen-sink pack.
- Check CPU details. Compare single-thread performance, allocation policy and upgrade options before treating two plans as equivalent.
- Verify storage and backups. Confirm disk type, usable capacity, backup frequency, retention, restore procedure and download rights.
- Confirm operational features. Check DDoS protection, mod installation, console access, scheduled restarts, support hours and whether an empty server remains online.
- Compare billing models. Multiply the hourly rate by realistic powered-on hours and compare the result with the monthly price, including taxes and add-ons.
- Check the region and renewal terms. Select a nearby location, read the recurring price and confirm that the provider supports your desired Minecraft version.
Symptoms that your plan is too small
- Out-of-memory crashes or repeated Java restarts: reduce view and simulation distance, remove unnecessary server-side mods and move to the next RAM tier if the pack’s baseline is already met.
- Low tick rate despite free RAM: investigate single-thread CPU saturation, chunk generation, entity counts and automation. More memory alone may not fix this.
- Long pauses when players travel: pregenerate a reasonable play area, lower generation-heavy settings or choose faster storage and a stronger CPU.
- Disk-full errors: remove obsolete logs, review backup retention and upgrade storage before the world is damaged.
- Lag only when everyone joins: measure peak concurrency and separate exploration patterns from idle-player counts. A server sized for two active players may fail with ten active explorers even if ten accounts are allowed.
Minecraft terms and modded servers
Mojang’s terms use the term “Modded Version” for Minecraft combined with a mod and address the operation and maintenance of servers. Legal wording and permitted-use details can change, so read the current terms before opening a public server, charging access fees or distributing a modified client. Hosting a server does not transfer ownership of Minecraft or of third-party mods; follow each modpack’s license and redistribution rules as well.
How to set a realistic first-month budget
For a private light pack, reserve $10–$15 for the first month and keep a small buffer for tax or a backup add-on. For a ten-player medium pack, $15–$20 is a practical starting budget, with the expectation that you may upgrade after observing peak memory and tick usage. For a kitchen-sink pack, begin around $20–$25 for 16–20GB and verify CPU capacity before inviting a larger community.
Record three measurements during the first busy sessions: peak memory use, main-thread or tick-time behavior and disk growth. If memory remains comfortably below the limit but tick time is poor, spend the next dollar on CPU quality rather than RAM. If memory reaches the limit during exploration, upgrade RAM or reduce generation load. Recheck the plan whenever the pack, Minecraft version or player count changes.
