For two people, the least expensive official option is Bedrock Realms at $3.99 USD per month. That subscription covers the owner and up to two other simultaneous players, so both people can play together and one additional guest can join. If both players use Java Edition, Java Realms costs $7.99 USD per month and allows the owner plus up to ten other simultaneous players.

Those are recurring subscription prices listed on October 15, 2026, and they can change by region or at checkout. Each player still needs to own the matching Minecraft edition, and console multiplayer may require a separate platform online subscription.

Official Minecraft Realms prices for two players

Realms is Minecraft’s managed, always-online server service. The owner pays the subscription; invited friends join without buying their own Realms subscription. Choose the plan that matches the edition both players use.

Plan Edition and supported players Monthly price listed October 15, 2026 What the limit means for a two-person group
Bedrock Realms Bedrock Edition; owner plus two other simultaneous players $3.99 USD per month, recurring Up to three people can be online at once, including the owner
Java Realms Java Edition; owner plus ten other simultaneous players $7.99 USD per month, recurring A two-person group uses only two of the 11 available simultaneous places
Bedrock Realms Plus Bedrock Edition; owner plus ten other simultaneous players $7.99 USD per month, recurring Same 11-player limit as Java Realms, plus access to the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog

The Bedrock entry is the cheapest official way to keep a private world online for two people. Java Realms costs more than that tier, but its capacity is much higher than a two-person group needs. Realms Plus is not a cheaper server plan; it is a Bedrock subscription with additional Marketplace content.

What the subscription includes

An always-online world

Minecraft describes a Realm as always online, so the owner does not have to start a game on their own computer before a friend can connect. A friend can play while the owner is offline, provided the friend has been invited and the Realm remains active. This convenience is the main reason to pay for Realms instead of hosting a local multiplayer world.

Backups and world slots

Realms includes free backups and three world slots. The slots let the owner keep multiple worlds available in the Realm service and switch between them rather than maintaining only one active save. Backups provide a recovery point if a world is damaged or an unwanted change needs to be reversed; they are part of the subscription rather than a separately priced backup product.

Invitations

The subscription belongs to the Realm owner. Invited friends do not need their own Realms subscription, although they must have the appropriate Minecraft edition and any platform account or online-service requirement that applies to their device.

Trial and renewal terms

Minecraft advertises a 30-day trial for eligible users. Eligibility is account- and offer-dependent, so the checkout screen is the authority for your account. Unless canceled, the subscription auto-renews. Check the renewal date and cancellation controls in the store or account where you purchased Realms; canceling prevents the next charge but does not turn a one-time purchase into a permanent server.

Java and Bedrock are separate choices

Edition compatibility determines which Realm you can use. Bedrock Realms supports Bedrock players on supported Bedrock devices and consoles. Java Realms supports Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A Bedrock player must join a Bedrock-hosted game, and a Java player must join a Java-hosted game. Java and Bedrock cannot share one Realm. Buying the cheaper Bedrock subscription will not let a Java player connect, and buying Java Realms will not create a cross-edition bridge.

How to choose the correct edition

  1. Check the edition each person launches on their device.
  2. Confirm that both accounts own that same edition; the game purchase is separate from Realms.
  3. If one person has Java and the other has Bedrock, decide whether one of you can play the other edition on a supported device. Otherwise, an official Realm cannot host both players together.

Do not compare prices until this compatibility check is complete. A lower monthly fee is useless if it belongs to the wrong edition.

What you will actually pay

1. The Realm subscription

For two Bedrock players, budget the recurring $3.99 monthly charge for the standard Bedrock tier. For two Java players, budget the recurring $7.99 monthly charge for Java Realms. Prices are quoted in U.S. dollars and were listed on October 15, 2026; taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing, and later price changes can alter the amount shown at checkout.

  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.

2. Minecraft for each player

Neither Realms price includes the game itself. Each person must own the matching Minecraft edition. If one person has not bought the game, add that separate purchase to the first-month total. No universal game price applies because it varies by platform, region, bundle, and promotion.

3. Console online-service charges

On consoles, the platform may require its own online multiplayer subscription. Minecraft’s Realms information warns that this fee can be separate from Realms. Check the console account’s current multiplayer requirement before assuming the Realm price is the entire monthly cost. PC players generally face a different account and online-service arrangement, so do not automatically apply a console fee to them.

4. Optional Marketplace content and add-ons

Standard Bedrock Realms does not include the Realms Plus Marketplace Pass catalog. Realms Plus costs $7.99 per month and adds rotating Marketplace Pass access while retaining the owner-plus-ten simultaneous-player limit. Treat Marketplace purchases or other add-ons as optional expenses, not as part of the $3.99 standard Bedrock price.

5. Taxes, currency, and billing channel

The figures above are advertised U.S.-dollar prices. Your store may display a converted amount, sales tax, or a different regional price. The final checkout total and the account’s renewal page control what you will be charged.

Do both players need to pay?

No. One person can subscribe and invite the other. The invited player does not buy a second Realms subscription. Both players still need the matching Minecraft edition, and console players may separately need the platform’s online multiplayer service. If you want each person to own and administer a separate Realm, each owner would need their own subscription, but that is not necessary for one shared two-person world.

Is Realms cheaper than renting a server?

There is no single honest price comparison for a rented server because providers sell different hardware allocations, player limits, storage, locations, backup policies, mod support, and uptime commitments. A provider’s cheapest plan might not offer the same capacity or reliability as Realms.

Consideration Official Realms Rented server or self-hosted computer
Monthly cost Known subscription price for the selected edition, subject to regional changes and taxes Provider, hardware, storage, uptime target, electricity rate, and network costs determine the total
Edition compatibility Bedrock and Java are separate services; players must use the matching edition Depends on the software and configuration you choose; compatibility must be verified before paying
Always-online convenience Managed by Minecraft; the owner’s computer does not need to stay on A rented host is online according to its plan; self-hosting requires your equipment and connection to remain available
Backups and world management Free backups and three world slots are included Backup frequency, restore tools, and world slots vary; self-hosting requires you to create and maintain them
Marketplace and add-ons Realms Plus includes the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog; standard Realms does not Content support depends on the host and game edition; check the provider’s technical limits
Technical control Simple managed setup with less server administration More control over settings and software, but more configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting

For only two players, Realms is often the simplest way to obtain predictable billing and an online world. A rented server can be better when you need specific technical controls, a particular modding setup, or resources beyond Realms’ managed options. Self-hosting can avoid a hosting subscription, but it shifts the cost to a computer, electricity, network reliability, maintenance time, and your own backup process. Without those specifications, assigning a monthly figure would be misleading.

How to set up the lowest-cost official option

  1. Confirm edition: Both players should launch the same edition. For the $3.99 tier, that is Bedrock.
  2. Check ownership: Make sure each player owns Minecraft for their device. Game ownership is separate from Realms.
  3. Open Realms from the game: Use the Realms option in the Minecraft menu and select the plan for your edition. The exact store wording can vary by device.
  4. Review checkout: Verify the displayed currency, taxes, trial eligibility, renewal date, and total. A trial may be shown only to eligible accounts.
  5. Choose or create a world: Start a new world or place an existing compatible world into the Realm. Keep another copy before making major changes.
  6. Invite the second player: Add the friend through the Realm’s player-management screen. The friend joins with their own game account and does not purchase Realms.
  7. Record billing controls: Note where the subscription renews and how to cancel. If you do not want a later charge, cancel before the displayed renewal date.

Common cost mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Counting the owner incorrectly: The Bedrock limit is the owner plus two others, not two total accounts. Java Realms is the owner plus ten others.
  • Assuming cross-play: Java and Bedrock cannot enter the same Realm. Check edition before subscribing.
  • Forgetting game purchases: A Realm subscription does not grant Minecraft to either player.
  • Ignoring console fees: A console’s multiplayer subscription may be billed separately.
  • Expecting Marketplace Pass in standard Bedrock Realms: The rotating catalog is a Realms Plus feature.
  • Missing auto-renewal: A trial or paid plan renews unless you cancel it through the relevant account or store.
  • Comparing unlike hosts: A third-party server’s advertised price may omit backups, storage, support, performance, or electricity. Compare those items before calling it cheaper.

Which option is cheapest for your situation?

Two Bedrock players who want the easiest setup

Choose standard Bedrock Realms. It has the lowest official monthly price, supports the owner and two simultaneous guests, and includes always-online access, backups, and three world slots.

Best Value
Minecraft - Bedrock Edition PS4
  • Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
  • discover community creations in the new in-game store
  • access new mini games and game modes through servers

Two Java players

Choose Java Realms if you want Minecraft-managed hosting and do not need to administer a separate server. The plan’s larger player allowance does not reduce its monthly price for a two-person group, but it leaves room for additional invited players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two Bedrock players who want Marketplace content

Compare the standard tier with Realms Plus. The Plus plan costs $7.99 per month and adds the rotating catalog; subscribe only if that content has value to your group.

Players who need mods or deep server control

Investigate a rented server or self-hosting only after defining the required edition, software, memory, storage, backup schedule, uptime, and network setup. Those requirements determine the real cost, and no universal alternative price applies.

Bottom line on a two-player Minecraft server

The official price floor is the Bedrock Realms subscription at $3.99 USD per month for the owner plus two simultaneous players. Java players pay $7.99 USD per month for the owner plus ten. Add the game purchase for anyone who does not already own the correct edition, any applicable console online fee, and optional content. Realms is the predictable, low-maintenance choice; rented hosting and self-hosting may provide more control but require a provider- or hardware-specific budget.
