Plan anywhere from about $50 to more than $10,000, depending on the format and how much of the character is custom. A PNGtuber can cost $50–$600. Current provider examples put complete Live2D work at $350–$2,480 for one rate card, while broader indicative Live2D ranges run $1,500–$7,000 or more. Custom 3D work is commonly quoted at $2,000–$10,000 or more, with another October 2026 calculator starting at $1,299. These are dated provider and compilation figures, not a statistically representative industry average.
The most useful way to budget is to separate character art, layer preparation, rigging, expressions, physics, software setup, revisions, and usage rights. Two quotes with the same “half-body model” label can include very different deliverables.
VTuber model prices at a glance
The table below combines named 2026 examples. Each figure should be treated as a planning reference; artists set their own prices, currencies, queues, and scope.

| Custom 3D starting estimate | From $1,299 | Facecam’s October 2026 calculator estimate; this is a starting point, not a complete-model ceiling. |
| VRoid-based 3D | Not stated by the cited sources | Studio Queues describes a VRoid Studio base model that can receive texture, outfit, hair, and other customization, but does not publish a comparable total in the cited material. |
AnimArts summarizes its own range this way: “Complete art + rigging packages run $350 (Starter bust) to $2,480 (fully custom full-body) — the most popular Standard package, half-body art with a standard rig, is $800.” That statement describes one provider’s menu, not an industry-wide standard.

What you are actually paying for
Character design and illustration
An artist may create the concept from a written brief, refine an existing design, or simply render an approved reference sheet. Clothing, armor, jewelry, hair strands, asymmetrical details, transparent materials, and layered accessories all add drawing and preparation time. Ask whether the quote covers design exploration, a final illustration, or only production from supplied references.
Layer separation for Live2D
Live2D animation needs a layered PSD rather than a flattened image. Eyes, pupils, brows, mouth parts, hair sections, sleeves, hands, and areas hidden behind other parts must be separated so they can move independently. The artist may have to redraw concealed regions that were never visible in the original illustration. Poorly separated or merged layers can force paid cleanup before rigging begins.
Rigging and tracking behavior
Rigging assigns the PSD layers to deformers and parameters that respond to camera tracking. A basic package may cover head rotation, blinking, mouth opening, and simple hair movement. More advanced work can add body turns, eye direction, multiple mouth shapes, hand movement, secondary motion, physics, and a larger expression set. The number and quality of these behaviors matter more than the word “rigged” on a quote.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3D modeling, materials, and facial setup
A 3D commission follows a different pipeline. It can involve mesh modeling, UVs and textures, hair and clothing construction, facial blendshapes, skeleton rigging, and export to the software or engine you plan to use. A VRoid-based project starts with a VRoid Studio base model and then customizes selected areas; a fully custom model is built rather than adapted from that base. Request each component separately so a low headline price does not hide missing production stages.
Delivery and integration
Some artists include a ready-to-use file; others charge separately for VTube Studio setup, Cubism SDK integration, export conversions, or troubleshooting. Confirm the target application, tracking method, file format, texture resolution, and whether you receive editable source files. A model that looks finished in a preview may still require setup before it works in your streaming software.
Commercial terms
Revisions, turnaround, payment milestones, rush scheduling, commercial usage, credit requirements, resale restrictions, and post-delivery support can change the final cost. These terms should appear in the written quote rather than being inferred from a portfolio sample.

How Live2D pricing is usually split
Art-only commissions
Art-only pricing makes sense when you already have a rigger or intend to animate the file later. Verify that the deliverable is a properly organized PSD, not merely a high-resolution PNG. Specify the layer list, naming convention, hidden redraws, and whether the artist will answer technical questions from the rigger.
Rigging-only commissions
Rigging-only work can be economical when your PSD is production-ready. AnimArts lists rigging-only work from $150. That starting figure does not establish what parameters, expressions, physics, revisions, or setup are included. Before accepting a quote, send the actual PSD and ask the rigger to identify missing separations or redraws in writing.
Bundled art plus rigging
Bundling keeps responsibility in one place, but the package name can conceal scope. On AnimArts’ 2026 rate card, complete packages run from $350 for a starter bust to $2,480 for a fully custom full-body model, with an $800 standard half-body package. Compare the body coverage, design complexity, expression count, physics, and delivery files behind each tier rather than comparing only the dollar amount.
How 3D options differ
VRoid-based customization
A VRoid Studio base can shorten the modeling stage. Customization may focus on textures, outfits, hair, accessories, or selected proportions. This route can be appropriate when you want a recognizable avatar quickly and can accept the limits of the base topology or available features. The cited sources do not establish a standard price, so request a project-specific quote.
Fully custom 3D
Studio Queues Team reports $2,000–$10,000 or more as an indicative 2026 range for custom 3D. Facecam’s October 2026 calculator gives a starting estimate of $1,299. The figures are not contradictory price lists: they represent different providers and scopes. A quote should state whether it includes modeling, texturing, facial blendshapes, rigging, export, revisions, and the software or engine integration you need.
Questions to ask a 3D artist
- Is the model built from scratch or based on a VRoid Studio model?
- Which outfit pieces, hair parts, accessories, and textures are custom?
- How many facial expressions or blendshapes are included?
- Which rigging and body movements are supported?
- What export format and target applications are delivered?
- Are editable project files included, and can another artist modify them later?
Budget examples you can use for planning
| Need | Useful planning anchor | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Simple reactive avatar | $50–$600 | Studio Queues Team’s 2026 PNGtuber range; confirm image count and expression states. |
| Entry Live2D bust | $350 | AnimArts starter-bust package on its 2026 rate card. |
| Half-body Live2D | $800 | AnimArts standard package with half-body art and a standard rig. |
| Fully custom Live2D full body | $2,480 | AnimArts’ listed package price; advanced requirements may be outside that tier. |
| Live2D with a wider scope or premium specialist | $1,500–$7,000+ | Studio Queues Team’s 2026 indicative range, not a median. |
| Custom 3D project | $2,000–$10,000+ | Studio Queues Team’s 2026 indicative range; model complexity and integration determine placement. |
Use these as anchors for conversations, not as promises. Provider prices and software integration fees can change, and a queue may be priced differently from a one-off rush commission.

How to request an accurate quote
Send the same brief to every candidate. A consistent brief makes differences in scope visible.
- Attach a reference sheet. Include front and side views if available, color codes, proportions, and examples of clothing, hair, and accessories.
- State body coverage. Say bust, half-body, or full-body, and identify whether hands, legs, shoes, tails, wings, or props must be visible.
- List expressions and motion. Name the required mouth shapes, eye states, brows, surprise or angry variants, head turns, body turns, hand gestures, and secondary motion.
- Define the tracking target. Identify the camera or tracking method and the software you will use, such as VTube Studio for a Live2D model.
- Describe complexity. Count outfits, layered coats, jewelry, transparent materials, animated accessories, and any alternate costumes.
- Set the deadline and flexibility. A fixed launch date can affect scheduling or add a rush fee; ask how the artist handles delays.
- Specify files and rights. Request the layered PSD, editable model files, exports, textures, and the commercial usage rights your channel needs.
- Request an itemized quote. Have the artist separate design, illustration, layer preparation, rigging, expressions, physics, setup, revisions, rush charges, and usage rights.
How to compare two quotes line by line
| Quote area | What to verify | Why it changes value |
|---|---|---|
| Illustration | New design work, rendering level, and body coverage | A polished full-body design requires more production than a supplied bust reference. |
| Layer preparation | PSD organization and hidden-area redraws | Rigging cannot animate details that are merged or missing. |
| Rigging | Head and body turns, eye and mouth tracking, deformers, and parameter count | “Basic rig” and advanced motion are materially different deliverables. |
| Expressions and physics | Exact expression list and which hair, cloth, or accessory physics are included | Each additional state or moving part requires setup and testing. |
| Technical delivery | VTube Studio readiness, export format, texture limits, and SDK integration | A file may need additional work before it runs in your chosen application. |
| Revisions | Number of rounds, approval stages, and what counts as a change request | Unbounded revisions create schedule and cost uncertainty. |
| Rights and source files | Commercial use, monetization, edits by another artist, and editable files | Usage restrictions can matter more than a small difference in the initial fee. |
If you already have the PSD
Having art can reduce the illustration portion, but it does not automatically make the file rig-ready. Use this handoff process:
- Confirm ownership and permission. Make sure your contract allows animation, modification, and commercial use by a separate rigger.
- Inspect the layer structure. Check that pupils, irises, eyelids, brows, mouth parts, hair sections, clothing, hands, and accessories are separated as needed.
- Ask for a technical review. Send the PSD before agreeing to a price and request a written list of redraws, merges, or missing layers.
- Agree on additions. Decide whether the original artist or the rigger will create hidden areas and whether that work is included or billed separately.
- Define the final handoff. Specify the rigged model file, exported textures, parameter settings, expression hotkeys, and any VTube Studio setup.
The $150 AnimArts starting price demonstrates that rigging-only services exist, but it should not be read as a universal fee or as proof that every PSD qualifies for that tier.
Common cost traps and how to avoid them
Comparing labels instead of deliverables
“Full body,” “premium,” and “fully rigged” are not standardized terms. Ask for a parameter or feature list and a short description of the intended tracking behavior.
Assuming revisions are unlimited
Clarify when you can request changes: sketch, finished art, rig test, or final delivery. Ask how corrections for an artist error differ from new creative direction.
Leaving integration until the end
Tell the artist your target software before production starts. VTube Studio setup, Cubism SDK work, export conversions, or troubleshooting may be separate line items.

Not securing source files
A flattened preview or locked export can make future outfit changes expensive. If you need ongoing edits, put the layered PSD and editable model files in the contract.
Ignoring usage rights
Streaming, monetized videos, merchandise, sponsorship artwork, and resale of the model can have different permissions. Obtain explicit commercial terms rather than assuming a commission automatically covers every use.
Paying for a rush without a realistic milestone plan
Ask for approval checkpoints and delivery dates for concept, art, rig test, and final files. A short deadline is safer when each stage has a sign-off point.
Choosing between 2D and 3D
- Choose PNGtuber work when your priority is the lowest entry cost and simple reactive expressions rather than continuous tracked motion.
- Choose Live2D when you want a 2D illustration with camera-driven facial movement and can provide or commission a layered PSD.
- Choose a VRoid-based 3D route when a base model and targeted customization meet your visual needs and you want to avoid a fully custom mesh.
- Choose fully custom 3D when three-dimensional movement, original geometry, detailed materials, or specialized facial and body controls justify the larger pipeline.
There is no universal “cheaper” format. A simple Live2D bust can cost less than a detailed 3D character, while a highly expressive Live2D commission can exceed a modest 3D customization. Compare the exact scope, not the format name alone.
