For US customers, Nintendo Switch Online is the cheapest way to obtain console online multiplayer at $19.99 for 12 months. PlayStation Plus Essential costs $79.99 annually, while Xbox pricing is centered on monthly plans: Game Pass Ultimate is $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass is $13.99. Those prices buy very different benefits, so the lowest sticker price is not automatically the best value for your console, games, or family.

The figures below are US prices checked on October 17, 2026. Nintendo and Microsoft state that prices vary by country, and Xbox tier names and prices have changed recently. Confirm the live price in your regional store before paying.

The following are the currently published prices for the plans most relevant to online play and game catalogs. Billing periods are shown exactly as offered; a monthly equivalent for annual plans is included only to make comparisons easier.

The Nintendo amounts come from Nintendo’s support pricing table, which notes that prices depend on country. PlayStation’s prices are from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2026 listing. Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 update lists the current Ultimate and PC prices; the Premium figure appears in Microsoft’s cloud-gaming guide.

PlayStation Plus: three tiers with substantial annual discounts

All three PlayStation Plus tiers include the core features most PlayStation owners associate with a subscription: online multiplayer, monthly games, cloud storage for saved data, Share Play, discounts and exclusive content. The catalog and streaming features depend on the tier.

Essential

Essential is the entry-level option at $10.99 monthly, $27.99 every three months or $79.99 for 12 months. Paying monthly for a year would total $131.88, so the annual plan saves $51.89, approximately 39%; PlayStation describes the annual discount as 39% versus monthly billing. Choose it when you mainly need online multiplayer and the recurring monthly-game selection rather than a large on-demand catalog.

Extra

Extra costs $16.99 monthly, $43.99 for three months or $134.99 annually. Twelve monthly payments would be $203.88, making the annual option $68.89 cheaper, approximately 33.8%, consistent with PlayStation’s stated 33% discount. Extra adds the Game Catalog, a rotating collection of downloadable PlayStation games, and Ubisoft+ Classics. Because the catalog changes, a game available when you subscribe is not a permanent entitlement.

Rank #2
Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Premium

Premium is $19.99 monthly, $54.99 quarterly or $159.99 annually. The monthly route would cost $239.88 over 12 months; the annual plan is $79.89 less, approximately 33.3%, matching PlayStation’s published 33% discount. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, time-limited game trials and cloud streaming to the Extra package. Streaming availability and supported titles can vary by market and game.

PlayStation says PS4 games are added only intermittently from January 2026. That means Extra and Premium should be evaluated on the catalog you can see now, not on an assumption that new PS4 releases will arrive every month. Monthly games and catalog titles also follow different availability rules, so check each game’s listing before relying on it for a long-term library.

Xbox Game Pass: the broadest device coverage, with monthly pricing

Xbox presents Game Pass as a cross-device service rather than a simple multiplayer fee. Ultimate is $22.99 per month after Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 update; Xbox announced that change with the statement, “Starting today, Game Pass Ultimate drops from $29.99 to $22.99 a month.” Microsoft also says prices may vary by region.

  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

Ultimate

Ultimate combines hundreds of console and PC games, online console multiplayer, unlimited cloud gaming, in-game benefits and major day-one releases. It is the most comprehensive choice for someone who plays on an Xbox console and a Windows PC, or who uses supported devices through cloud gaming. Microsoft has not published a 12-month Ultimate price in the cited update, so an annual total should not be inferred from a discounted yearly bundle. At the listed US rate, 12 monthly payments would be $275.88, but that is simply arithmetic, not a separately advertised annual price.

Day-one access has an important qualification in 2026: Microsoft’s update says future Call of Duty games will arrive around the following holiday season rather than at launch. Ultimate still carries major day-one releases as a benefit, but that statement means readers should verify the timing of a particular franchise instead of treating “day one” as an unconditional promise for every title.

PC Game Pass

PC Game Pass is $13.99 per month after the same April 2026 update. It is aimed at PC play and should not be selected as a substitute for the console plan when your requirement is online multiplayer on an Xbox console. The update does not state quarterly or annual prices.

  • 6.2” LCD screen.
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld

Premium

Xbox’s cloud-gaming guide lists Game Pass Premium at $14.99 per month and describes 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices. Because Microsoft changed Game Pass plans during 2025 and 2026, the name, included features and price shown in your country’s store should take precedence over an older article or saved subscription page.

Nintendo Switch Online: the lowest entry price and the clearest family math

Individual membership

The standard individual membership costs $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months or $19.99 for a year. The annual price is the lowest listed US cost for console online multiplayer: less than half of PlayStation Plus Essential’s annual price. Twelve monthly Nintendo payments would total $47.88, so the $19.99 annual option saves $27.89 compared with buying one month at a time.

Family membership

The standard family membership costs $34.99 annually. Nintendo’s official overview gives a useful upper-bound example: with a group of eight people, the price is less than $5 per person a year. Dividing the listed price evenly among eight members gives about $4.37 each. Members must belong to the same Nintendo family group; it is not an unrestricted public sharing pool.

Best Value
Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

Expansion Pack

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack costs $49.99 annually for one person or $79.99 annually for a family group. It adds classic libraries including Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Sega Genesis, plus selected downloadable content such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass. The regular online functions are included, so Expansion Pack is primarily a choice for the retro libraries and included DLC rather than a requirement for multiplayer.

Which subscription is cheapest for online multiplayer?

On the published US annual prices, Nintendo Switch Online individual wins at $19.99. Nintendo’s $34.99 family plan is also lower than one year of PlayStation Plus Essential when shared across an eligible family group. PlayStation Essential is $79.99 annually and is the least expensive PlayStation tier that includes online console multiplayer.

Xbox requires more caution in this comparison. The cited 2026 update emphasizes Ultimate at $22.99 monthly and PC Game Pass at $13.99; it does not establish a single lowest-cost Xbox console-multiplayer plan or an annual Xbox price. Check the Xbox store set to your country and confirm that the plan explicitly includes console online multiplayer before comparing it with Nintendo or PlayStation.

Catalogs, devices and release timing

What matters to you Best-aligned service based on the published benefits Important limitation
Lowest annual multiplayer cost Nintendo Switch Online individual at $19.99 Classic libraries and DLC require Expansion Pack; the base plan is not a broad modern-game catalog
PlayStation catalog access PS Plus Extra or Premium Catalog contents rotate, and PS4 additions are intermittent from January 2026
Classics and selected Nintendo DLC Switch Online + Expansion Pack Only the listed classic systems and selected DLC are included; it is not an all-publisher catalog
Console, PC and cloud access Game Pass Ultimate $22.99 is a monthly US price; regional pricing and franchise timing can differ
Game trials and PlayStation streaming PS Plus Premium Streaming and trial availability depend on supported games and markets
PC-only subscription PC Game Pass Does not satisfy the need for Xbox console multiplayer

PlayStation’s approach is centered on PlayStation catalogs and streaming, Nintendo’s on first-party classics and selected DLC, and Xbox’s on a cross-device catalog. None of these services guarantees that every game you want remains available indefinitely; check the current catalog and the individual game’s platform listing.

How to decide what you will really pay

  1. Identify the device that needs multiplayer. A Switch, PlayStation console, Xbox console and gaming PC do not use interchangeable plans. Start with the platform on which you will actually play.
  2. Choose your billing horizon. If you expect to keep PlayStation Plus for a full year, compare the annual prices because Sony publishes large annual discounts. Nintendo’s annual individual plan is dramatically cheaper than twelve monthly payments. Xbox’s cited prices are monthly, so do not assume an annual discount exists.
  3. List the games you expect to use. For a rotating catalog, verify that the title is currently included and note whether it is a catalog game, a monthly game, a classic or included DLC. A subscription does not turn every game into a permanent purchase.
  4. Check who will use the account. Nintendo’s family plans can cover a family group of up to eight, changing the per-person calculation. PlayStation and Xbox sharing rules are different, so read the platform’s account terms rather than assuming the Nintendo model applies.
  5. Confirm release timing. If a subscription is the reason you are waiting for a new game, check the publisher’s listing. Xbox’s 2026 clarification about future Call of Duty timing demonstrates why a general day-one label is not enough.
  6. Verify the checkout screen. Set the storefront to your country, check whether tax is shown separately, and confirm the renewal interval and current tier name immediately before purchase.

Price and availability caveats for 2026

  • All dollar figures in this comparison are US prices retrieved on October 17, 2026; they are not a worldwide price list.
  • Nintendo explicitly says prices depend on country, and Microsoft says Xbox prices may vary by region.
  • Microsoft changed Game Pass plans and pricing during 2025–2026, so older comparisons can show obsolete tier names or amounts.
  • The PlayStation annual discount percentages are Sony’s comparison with paying monthly, not a promise that every retailer or promotion will show the same effective price.
  • Catalogs, monthly games, streaming libraries, trials and included DLC can change. Price alone cannot guarantee that a particular title will remain accessible.

For a US player who only needs inexpensive online multiplayer, Nintendo Switch Online individual at $19.99 per year is the clear price leader. PlayStation Plus Essential costs more but is the appropriate entry tier for PlayStation multiplayer, while Extra and Premium justify their higher annual prices only when their catalogs, classics, trials or streaming features match your play habits. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the broadest cross-device package at $22.99 monthly, but its value depends on using console, PC or cloud features often enough to offset the lack of a published annual price and the regional uncertainty.
