Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Most small WordPress sites should start with about 5–10 GB of hosting storage. That is a planning estimate for a brochure site or light blog with optimized images and backups kept elsewhere—not a WordPress requirement. A blog with frequent images may be more comfortable at 10–20 GB. Photography, video, downloads, ecommerce, multilingual content, staging sites, or backups retained on the same hosting account can require tens of gigabytes.
The reliable answer is your measured installation size, plus expected growth and any retained backup copies. WordPress has no universal disk-space quota or published minimum that applies to every site.

What counts toward a WordPress site’s disk space?
Your hosting account normally stores several different kinds of data. WordPress core is only one part of the total.
WordPress files
The file area contains the WordPress core, active and inactive themes, plugins, PHP and JavaScript code, configuration files, and other static assets. Updates can leave additional files temporarily or permanently, and some plugins create their own directories.

Uploads and the Media Library
Images, PDFs, audio, video, and other files uploaded through WordPress are stored in the Media Library and directly affect available storage. Media is commonly the fastest-growing part of a site, especially when the same image is uploaded in several sizes or when original high-resolution files are retained.
Image optimization reduces the size of new files, but it does not remove existing originals or old unused media. A site publishing several large photos every week can outgrow a quota much faster than a text-focused blog.

The database
Posts, pages, settings, users, comments, orders, and plugin data live in a database separate from the file area. A full backup needs both the files and the database. Deleting files alone does not remove database content, and exporting only the database cannot restore uploaded images or plugin files.
Host-specific data
Your provider may count more than the live WordPress directory against the same quota. Possible additions include:
- Cached pages, image thumbnails, and optimization copies
- Access and error logs
- Staging or development copies
- Email mailboxes stored in the hosting account
- Temporary update archives
- Backup archives retained on the server
These rules vary by host and plan. Always check the provider’s storage breakdown rather than assuming that “website files” are the entire quota.
How much storage should you plan for?
The following ranges are editorial planning estimates derived from the storage components above. They are not published WordPress limits or guarantees.

| Site profile | Practical starting range | What can change the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Small brochure site or light blog | 5–10 GB | Image sizes, plugin count, email, cache files, and whether backups are stored elsewhere |
| Regular blog with a growing image library | 10–20 GB | Publishing frequency, original-image retention, generated thumbnails, and media optimization |
| Photography, downloads, ecommerce, multilingual, or staging | Tens of gigabytes, calculated from measured usage | Product images, customer uploads, downloadable files, translated content, staging copies, and transaction-related data |
| Any site retaining backups on the same account | Live site plus every retained backup set | Number of copies, compression, database size, and whether each archive contains all files |
Leave headroom for updates, temporary files, media growth, and recovery work. A quota that is technically larger than today’s installation can still be too small if it reaches its limit during an update or backup.
Is 10 GB enough for WordPress?
Often, yes—for a small site with controlled media and off-site backups. Ten gigabytes can comfortably cover a modest brochure site or light blog when images are optimized, unused themes and plugins are removed, and email and backups do not consume the same quota.
Ten gigabytes may not be enough for a photo-heavy publication, an online store with many product assets, a site offering software or video downloads, a multilingual installation with staging, or a site retaining several complete backups locally on the host. Measure the current installation and project growth instead of treating 10 GB as a universal answer.
How to measure your current requirement
Use the following process before selecting or renewing a hosting plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Site Health. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Tools → Site Health → Info. Record the total installation size, database size, upload capability, and maximum single-file upload size shown there.
- Separate files from the database. Inspect the uploads directory, plugin and theme directories, and the database independently. A large database can come from orders, revisions, logs, or plugin tables even when the visible media folder is small.
- Find hidden consumers. Review cache, log, staging, temporary, and backup directories. Ask the host whether mailboxes and control-panel backups are included in the same quota.
- Measure a representative publishing period. Compare storage before and after a typical month or quarter. Note how many images, documents, products, or other files you add and their average size.
- Project 12–24 months. Multiply the observed growth by the period you want to cover. Use your real publishing schedule rather than a generic industry average.
- Add operational headroom. Reserve space for WordPress, plugin, and theme updates, temporary archives, generated image sizes, and emergency recovery tasks.
- Add retained backups. If a complete backup is stored on the host, add its files-and-database size for every copy you keep.
Recheck the measurement after major changes such as launching a store, adding a staging site, importing a media archive, or installing a backup and optimization plugin.
Backups can multiply the required space
A full restore requires the WordPress files and the database. File backups include core files, plugins, themes, uploaded media, code, and other static files; a database export does not contain those files.

WordPress Developer Resources recommends keeping at least 3–5 recent backups in different locations—for example, one on the hosting server, one in cloud storage, and one on a local computer. This is a backup-safety recommendation, not a storage quota.
If one complete backup is 2 GB and you retain five complete copies on the hosting account, those archives can consume about 10 GB in addition to the live site. Compression may reduce the actual amount, while incremental systems may use a different pattern. Check whether your backup tool includes the database, uploads, excluded directories, and old archives when it reports a size.
Keeping copies off-site reduces hosting consumption and protects you if the hosting account becomes unavailable. A local external hard drive or SSD can hold the local copy; choose its capacity from your measured backup-set size and retention policy rather than from a fixed WordPress requirement.
Disk quota and upload limit are different
Total disk space is the amount your account can store. The upload limit is the largest individual request WordPress and the server will accept. PHP settings such as upload_max_filesize and post_max_size control request limits.
Therefore, buying more disk space does not automatically fix an error saying that an individual file is too large. If free storage is available but a 200 MB video will not upload, inspect the WordPress and hosting upload limits, PHP configuration, web-server limits, and any plan-specific restriction. Increasing a request limit also does not create more total quota.
How media choices affect storage
Images
Use appropriately sized images, modern formats where your workflow supports them, and compression that preserves the quality your design needs. Avoid uploading a camera original when a smaller display-size file is sufficient. Audit old originals and unused media carefully; remove files only after confirming that no page, product, CSS rule, or external integration still references them.

Video and audio
Video files can consume gigabytes quickly and create multiple processing copies. For public video, a dedicated video platform or object-storage service is often more practical than placing every file on the web host. If you must serve media from the host, include originals, encoded variants, thumbnails, and download traffic in your capacity calculation.
Downloads and customer uploads
PDF libraries, software packages, design files, user avatars, and ecommerce customer uploads are persistent storage, not temporary traffic. Estimate the number of files, average size, replacement policy, and whether old versions remain available.
Choosing a hosting quota
Compare plans using the items that actually determine usable capacity:
- Included storage and whether it is per site or shared across an account
- Whether databases, email, staging, caches, logs, and backups count toward the quota
- Backup retention, archive limits, and whether restores are available without manual file work
- Maximum individual upload size and the process for changing it
- How much headroom remains after today’s measured usage
- How easily you can export complete backups to cloud storage or a local computer
Hosted WordPress plans can have plan-specific allowances. For example, WordPress.com documentation lists 50 GB on its Business and Commerce plans. That figure describes those plans, not a minimum or requirement for WordPress sites generally. Hosting quotas and pricing change, so verify the current terms for the exact region and plan before purchasing.
Common storage problems and fixes
The quota is full even though the site looks small
Inspect server backups, staging copies, cache directories, logs, email, and old migration archives. A control-panel usage report can reveal data outside the public WordPress directory. Remove files only after confirming they are not needed for restoration or operation.
The database keeps growing
Revisions, scheduled-action records, order history, analytics data, and plugin logs can grow independently of media. Identify the tables responsible, confirm retention requirements, and use the relevant plugin’s documented cleanup controls. Take a tested backup before deleting database records.

An update fails for lack of space
Free enough space for the download, extraction, replacement files, and rollback copy. A nearly full account may fail even when the final update would fit. Export a backup, remove verified temporary or obsolete archives, and retry.
Backups fail after a media import
Large uploads can make a complete archive exceed the remaining quota or the backup tool’s limits. Move historical archives off-host, adjust retention, or use a backup destination with sufficient capacity. Confirm that the resulting backup contains both files and the database and that it can be restored.
A simple sizing formula
For planning, use:
Required hosting storage = current files + current database + projected growth + headroom + (backup-set size × on-host copies) + provider-specific data.
Measure each term rather than guessing. If backups are entirely off-site, the on-host backup term may be zero; you still need a separate destination sized for its own retention policy. If email or staging shares the account, include their measured usage in provider-specific data.
The Bottom Line
Plan from measurements: 5–10 GB is a sensible starting point for a small, media-light WordPress site, 10–20 GB suits many growing blogs, and media-heavy or backup-retaining sites should calculate capacity in tens of gigabytes. Keep live files and the database together in backups, store copies in separate locations, and treat upload limits as a separate setting from total disk quota.
