In the United States, DVD players cost roughly $480 to $1,600 in early launch-era reporting in 1997. In a retailer snapshot accessed October 12, 2026, standalone players were listed from $26.98 to $69.99 in several examples. Those figures are not directly equivalent: the 1997 range reflects contemporary reporting, while the 2026 prices are individual listings rather than a market average.

What did a DVD player cost in 1997?

For US buyers, The Washington Post reported an early DVD-player price range of $480 to $1,600 in 1997. The range captures the spread of products available at launch; it is not a single typical price or an average across all models.

A separate historical measure comes from a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics paper using data from InfoTech, Inc. It reported an average retail price of $735 in the first half of 1997. The BLS paper explains that its sampled player models were used for a quality-adjustment analysis and that the official CPI sample was too small for that estimation. The $735 figure is therefore a sampled average, distinct from the newspaper’s broad price range.

Prices fell as the format matured

In the same InfoTech data reported by the BLS, the average retail price was $470 in the second half of 1998. The BLS paper reports a mean of $443.39 for the first half of 1999. These figures show that prices were already declining after the format’s introduction; they should not be mistaken for additional 1997 launch prices.

How much does a DVD player cost in 2026?

Standalone DVD players were still listed for sale in the United States in 2026. A Walmart category snapshot accessed October 12, 2026, included a GPX D200B for $26.98, a Sony DVP-SR210P for $45, and a Panasonic DVD-S700 for $69.99. These are examples from one retailer’s listings, not an industry-wide average or guaranteed prices; listings can change and other products may cost more.

Sony’s official product page states a $44.99 MSRP for the DVP-SR210P. Walmart’s observed $45 listing is close to that stated MSRP, but the two figures come from different sources and are not the same kind of price.

Why do the historical prices vary?

Price range, average, and model price answer different questions

The 1997 $480–$1,600 range describes reported prices across products, while the $735 figure summarizes a sampled set of retail prices for the first half of that year. A named model’s price is narrower still: Yahoo Tech reported a Panasonic example at $749. Treat that as a specific model price, not as the typical cost of every DVD player in 1997.

Model tier and country matter

DVD players were not priced uniformly across brands and product tiers, and a price from another country cannot be read as a US retail price. For example, Pioneer announced a ¥190,000 price for its DV-S9 flagship in Japan, with a planned mid-December 1997 launch. That figure illustrates a different market and high-end model; it is not a US comparison point.

What is the 1997 price in 2026 dollars?

Yahoo Tech described the $749 Panasonic example as worth more than $1,500 in 2026 dollars. The article result does not identify the CPI period or calculation method, so that conversion should be treated as Yahoo Tech’s rounded comparison, not as an independently verified inflation calculation.

A precise inflation-adjusted comparison requires a defined CPI series, starting month or period, and ending month or period. Without those choices, a single converted figure can imply more precision than the evidence supports. The clearest comparison here is therefore nominal: early 1997 US reporting put players at $480–$1,600, whereas the cited 2026 retailer examples were under $70.
