For a one-week trip, plan on roughly 2–5 GB for light use, 5–15 GB for moderate use, or 10–40 GB for heavy use. Those are provider estimates, not a universal average. Your actual requirement depends on daily video, social-media, navigation, cloud-sync and hotspot use, plus how often you have dependable Wi‑Fi. Calculate from your own habits, then check coverage, validity, speed limits and tethering rules before purchasing.
One-week data benchmarks
Published guidance varies because each provider defines “light,” “moderate” and “heavy” use differently. Orange Travel’s 2026 calculator guidance (page reviewed October 9, 2026) gives the lower figures below. Vodafone Travel’s August 14, 2026 calculator uses broader ranges, especially for video-heavy travelers.
| Usage profile | Orange Travel estimate for seven days | Vodafone Travel estimate for seven days | Who this generally fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | About 2 GB | About 3–5 GB | Messaging, occasional maps, light browsing and little or no streaming |
| Moderate | About 5 GB | About 8–15 GB | Daily social media, regular navigation and some music or video |
| Heavy | About 10 GB | About 20–40 GB | Frequent video, video calls, cloud activity or hotspot sharing |
Use the figures as starting points rather than promises. Both pages are provider-authored approximations, and neither establishes an independent average for all travelers. A person who only texts and checks directions can stay below the light range, while a single hour of high-quality video or tethering can push a supposedly moderate plan much higher.
Calculate your own allowance
1. List what you will do each day
Estimate an average day, not your busiest imaginable day. Write down hours or minutes for messaging, navigation, social feeds, music, video, video calls and any laptop or companion devices that will use your hotspot. Include travel days at airports and on trains, when Wi‑Fi may be unavailable.

2. Apply approximate hourly consumption
The following figures come from the two 2026 provider guides. They are approximate rates; app versions, video resolution, advertising and background activity can change the result.
| Activity | Approximate rate published by Orange Travel | Approximate rate published by Vodafone Travel | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Messaging | About 5 MB per hour | Not separately stated | Text-only conversations are usually a minor part of the allowance; photos and videos add more. |
| Navigation | About 7.5 MB per hour | About 5–10 MB per hour for Google Maps navigation | Turn-by-turn directions are light compared with video, but repeated map downloads and satellite imagery use more. |
| Social media | About 150 MB per hour | Not stated for general social use | Auto-playing short video can make a feed consume far more than a text-and-photo feed. |
| TikTok or similar short-video feed | Not stated | About 500 MB–1 GB per hour | Thirty minutes every day can add roughly 1.75–3.5 GB over a week before other activity. |
| Video streaming | About 480 MB per hour | About 1–4 GB per hour for HD video | Resolution and app settings explain much of the difference; HD playback is the fastest way to exhaust a small plan. |
| Video calls | About 300 MB per hour | Not separately stated | Group calls, high-definition cameras and screen sharing can increase consumption. |
3. Multiply by trip length
Add the data for each activity to get a daily estimate, multiply by the number of travel days, and then add a safety margin. For example, using Orange’s approximate rates, one hour of messaging (5 MB), one hour of navigation (7.5 MB), one hour of social media (150 MB), 30 minutes of video (240 MB) and 30 minutes of video calls (150 MB) total about 552.5 MB per day. Over seven days that is about 3.9 GB before backups, updates or hotspot traffic. This pattern sits between the light and moderate categories even though the traveler uses video every day.
A second traveler who watches two hours of HD video daily could consume approximately 2–8 GB per day at Vodafone’s published HD range. That is 14–56 GB in a week from video alone, so a 20–40 GB plan may still be insufficient at the upper end. These calculations illustrate why a single label such as “moderate” cannot replace an activity estimate.

4. Add a realistic buffer
Round up when your schedule is uncertain, you expect large photo uploads, or you will share data. A 20%–30% reserve is a practical planning choice, not a provider guarantee. If your arithmetic gives 6 GB, selecting an 8 GB or 10 GB allowance can prevent an expensive emergency top-up; if reliable Wi‑Fi covers most evenings, the reserve can be smaller.
Adjust for weekends, two weeks and a month
The providers publish the clearest benchmarks for a one-week trip. For other durations, multiply your own weekly estimate by the number of weeks, then adjust for changes in routine. The examples below are simple linear planning math, not additional provider recommendations.
| Trip length | Light profile using Orange’s 2 GB/week reference | Moderate profile using Orange’s 5 GB/week reference | Heavy profile using Orange’s 10 GB/week reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend (3 days) | About 0.9 GB | About 2.1 GB | About 4.3 GB |
| One week (7 days) | About 2 GB | About 5 GB | About 10 GB |
| Two weeks (14 days) | About 4 GB | About 10 GB | About 20 GB |
| One month (30 days) | About 8.6 GB | About 21.4 GB | About 42.9 GB |
Vodafone’s broader one-week bands scale in the same way if you prefer its assumptions: 3–5 GB becomes 6–10 GB for two weeks, 8–15 GB becomes 16–30 GB, and 20–40 GB becomes 40–80 GB. A long trip is rarely identical every week, so recalculate if you move from hotels with Wi‑Fi to camping, start working remotely, or begin tethering a laptop.

What makes a plan run out early
Streaming and short-form video
Video quality is the largest variable. Automatic HD or 4K playback, downloaded episodes over cellular data and short-video autoplay can consume hundreds of megabytes or several gigabytes in an hour. Set a lower mobile-data quality before departure and download shows or playlists on Wi‑Fi.
Cloud backups and automatic updates
Photo libraries, operating-system updates and app updates may start in the background. A day of new photos can be modest, but a first-time cloud sync can be many gigabytes. Pause cellular backups and restrict updates to Wi‑Fi until you reach a trusted connection.
Hotspot and tethering
A laptop can use data faster than a phone because websites deliver desktop images, software updates and cloud files. Sharing with another traveler multiplies demand. Confirm that tethering is allowed and include every connected device in your calculation.

Navigation and messaging
Basic directions and text messages are relatively light in both provider estimates. They still rise when you repeatedly browse map imagery, download entire regions, send video clips or make frequent media-rich group chats.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Wi‑Fi and offline content change the estimate
Download offline maps, music, podcasts and entertainment while on home or hotel Wi‑Fi. Use Wi‑Fi for large uploads, photo backups and software updates, and disable video autoplay or lower playback quality on cellular data.
Vodafone estimates that regular, reliable accommodation or office Wi‑Fi may reduce expected mobile use by 30%–50%. Treat that as Vodafone’s estimate, not a guaranteed saving: intermittent Wi‑Fi, captive portals and weak signals can force you back onto cellular data. Do not count a connection as “available” unless you can actually use it when your main activities occur.

Compare more than the headline gigabytes
Destination and regional coverage
Check every country and territory on your itinerary. A country-specific plan may not work after a border crossing, while a regional plan can cost more but avoid a second purchase. Availability and pricing vary by destination even though the underlying activity rates do not inherently change by country.
Validity and activation rules
Read when validity starts: installation, first network connection or a date selected at checkout. Make sure the number of days covers arrival and departure, including overnight flights and layovers.
High-speed allowance and speed management
“Unlimited” describes the billing model, not necessarily unlimited high-speed service. Vodafone’s Europe page currently describes an unlimited offer with 5 GB of high-speed data per day, followed by speeds of up to 5 Mbps. Terms can change, so verify the live plan page before purchase and decide whether the reduced speed is adequate for video calls, navigation and hotspot use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHotspot policy and top-ups
Confirm that tethering is permitted and whether hotspot traffic has a separate cap. A top-up option is valuable when your estimate is uncertain; check its price, expiration and whether a top-up restores full speed or only adds data at a throttled tier.
Device compatibility and setup
Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked for another network. Check the device model, operating-system requirements and installation method before departure. Keep the QR code or activation details accessible offline, and install over Wi‑Fi so the plan is ready when you land.
Before you buy: a practical checklist
- Count the countries and dates on the itinerary.
- Estimate daily hours for video, social feeds, calls, navigation and messaging.
- Include cloud backups, app updates and every hotspot device.
- Multiply the daily total by travel days and add a buffer.
- Compare the destination’s coverage, validity and total allowance.
- Read high-speed thresholds and post-threshold speeds, especially on “unlimited” offers.
- Verify hotspot support, top-up terms and expiration.
- Confirm eSIM compatibility and that the phone is unlocked.
- Download maps and entertainment, then restrict backups and updates to Wi‑Fi.
If you are running out of data
- Open your phone’s cellular-data settings and sort usage by app. Disable mobile access for video, cloud-storage and social apps that are consuming the allowance.
- Connect to trusted Wi‑Fi and complete pending backups, updates and downloads there.
- Switch streaming to a lower quality, turn off autoplay and stop hotspot connections you no longer need.
- Check the eSIM provider’s account page for a top-up or an extension. Confirm whether the added data inherits the original validity period.
- If the plan is throttled rather than empty, test essential services such as maps and messaging before buying another package; a top-up may not remove a speed restriction.
Bottom line for choosing your allowance
Start with your own activity log, not the word “unlimited” or a generic traveler profile. For seven days, 2–5 GB is a sensible light-use starting point, 5–15 GB covers many moderate patterns, and 10–40 GB is the broad heavy-use range shown by current provider guidance. Move upward for daily HD video, cloud syncing or hotspot work; move downward only when offline downloads and dependable Wi‑Fi genuinely cover those activities. Then select the plan whose coverage, validity, speed policy and top-up rules match the itinerary.
