For a one-week international trip, provider guides suggest roughly 2–5 GB for light use, 5–15 GB for moderate use, and 10–40 GB for heavy use. Those wide ranges are starting points, not universal averages: the right amount depends mainly on video, work and hotspot use, trip length, and how often you can use Wi-Fi. Estimate your daily activities first, then choose a plan that covers the trip and check its speed, coverage, and expiry terms.

Start with your activities, not a fixed daily allowance

Messaging and ordinary navigation usually use far less data than video streaming, video calls, social feeds, or sharing a connection with a laptop. A traveler who downloads maps and playlists on Wi-Fi and uses mobile data for chat and directions may need only a few gigabytes for a week. Daily streaming, video meetings, high-resolution uploads, or hotspot use can multiply that requirement.

Orange Travel’s September 28, 2026 guide gives these approximate activity rates. They are provider estimates, not a guarantee for an individual phone or app:

Activity Approximate data use What can change it
Messaging, such as WhatsApp or iMessage 5 MB per hour Sending photos or video uses more than text.
Social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok 150 MB per hour Autoplay video and image quality can increase use.
Navigation, such as Google Maps or Waze 7.5 MB per hour Offline maps reduce mobile data use; app settings and background activity vary.
Streaming, such as YouTube or Netflix 480 MB per hour Quality settings and the service affect consumption.
Video calls, such as FaceTime 300 MB per hour Call quality and app settings affect use.

These values are useful for comparing activities, not precise predictions. The same hour of navigation or social media use can consume different amounts depending on offline content, settings, background activity, and the content you view. Orange says the data use of the same activity does not change simply because you are in a different country; coverage, plan availability, and price can.

Use the trip-length ranges as a starting point

Provider estimates differ because their usage profiles and assumptions are not identical. Orange Travel’s 2026 guide and Vodafone Travel’s guide, accessed October 9, 2026, offer the following estimates:

Trip length Light use Moderate or average use Heavy use Source
Four days 1 GB 3 GB 5–7 GB Orange Travel, 2026
One week Orange: 2 GB; Vodafone: 3–5 GB Orange: 5 GB; Vodafone: 8–15 GB Orange: 10 GB; Vodafone: 20–40 GB Orange Travel, 2026; Vodafone Travel, accessed October 9, 2026
Two weeks Orange: 4 GB; Vodafone Europe: 5–10 GB Orange: 10 GB; Vodafone Europe: 20 GB Orange: 20 GB; Vodafone Europe: 50 GB Orange Travel, 2026; Vodafone Travel Europe FAQ, accessed October 9, 2026
One month 8 GB 20 GB 40 GB Orange Travel, 2026

For Vodafone’s two-week Europe guidance, 5–10 GB is for occasional email, messaging, and maps; 20 GB is for more regular use; and 50 GB is for intensive video, remote work, high-resolution uploads, or hotspot use. Vodafone says the Europe allowance is shared among its covered countries. Check the actual country list and plan conditions before relying on a regional bundle.

For a quick decision, a one-week traveler who mainly messages, navigates, and occasionally checks social media could start by comparing 2–5 GB options. Someone who regularly streams or makes video calls should look at larger allowances and calculate those hours explicitly. Remote work or hotspot use calls for a generous allowance, particularly if there is no dependable Wi-Fi. No independent, representative study establishes a universal average for international travelers, so treat these provider figures as estimates rather than measured population norms.

Calculate a personal estimate

  1. List your daily activities. Estimate hours of messaging, social media, navigation, streaming, and video calls on a typical travel day.
  2. Multiply each activity by its approximate hourly rate. For example, two hours of social media at Orange Travel’s estimate is about 300 MB; one hour of streaming is about 480 MB.
  3. Add the daily amounts and multiply by trip days. Keep units consistent: 1,000 MB is approximately 1 GB for a practical estimate.
  4. Account for Wi-Fi and offline downloads. Subtract activity you expect to do on reliable accommodation or other Wi-Fi, and download maps, playlists, and large files before leaving Wi-Fi.
  5. Choose a buffer that fits the consequences of running short. If topping up is easy and you can use Wi-Fi, you may prefer a smaller initial bundle. If you need a hotspot for work or cannot risk losing connectivity, allow more headroom.
  6. Match the estimate to the plan’s validity and rules. Confirm the allowance lasts for the whole trip and find out whether it is full-speed data, a daily cap, or a high-speed allowance followed by slower service.

For example, a week with an hour of social media and an hour of streaming each day works out to roughly 630 MB per day using Orange’s rates, or about 4.4 GB across seven days before Wi-Fi adjustments and a buffer. That is an illustration based on provider estimates, not a forecast of every traveler’s usage.

Check these plan details before buying

  • Coverage: Verify every destination on your itinerary, including layovers. A regional plan may share its allowance among covered countries; do not assume that a country is included because it is nearby.
  • Validity and usable data: Check when the plan starts and expires, whether it has a daily limit, and whether advertised unlimited use includes unlimited high-speed data.
  • Speed after the allowance: Some plans reduce speeds after a high-speed amount rather than stopping data completely. Verizon’s current TravelPass page describes 5 GB of high-speed data followed by unlimited data at 3G speeds in the described session; its monthly plan describes 20 GB high-speed followed by 3G-speed data. Check destination and account eligibility.
  • Top-ups: Find out whether you can add data, how the top-up works, and whether it extends the expiry date. Vodafone says top-ups are available for its Europe offer; terms apply.
  • Hotspot and sharing: Confirm tethering is permitted and whether the data allowance can support a laptop or another traveler. Laptop updates and video calls can consume data quickly.
  • Voice and text: Many travel eSIM bundles provide data only. If you need a local number or ordinary calls and texts, check what the plan includes rather than assuming data service covers them.
  • Total cost: Compare the full trip cost, including daily roaming charges and charges for multiple lines, with a prepaid SIM or eSIM bundle. Terms and prices change, so check the carrier’s current offer for your account and destination.

Choose how to connect

Use your existing carrier first if it already covers the trip

Check your home plan before buying a second service. Some plans include international roaming, and carriers may offer passes with a defined allowance or access to domestic plan data. Apple advises checking with the network provider about included roaming or a travel pass.

The current carrier examples illustrate why the exact mechanics matter. T-Mobile lists International Pass options of 2 GB for one day, 15 GB for 10 days, and 30 GB for 30 days for eligible customers and covered destinations; the allowance is not restricted to a daily amount. Verizon’s TravelPass example has a high-speed allowance followed by slower service. AT&T International Day Pass applies a daily fee for each 24-hour period of use in covered destinations; its support page says speeds may be reduced after 500 MB in a 24-hour period on certain ships. Background app activity can trigger an AT&T charge. These are examples for those carriers’ customers, not universal offers.

Consider a travel eSIM if your phone and plan support it

A travel eSIM can provide a country- or region-specific data bundle without replacing a physical SIM. On iPhone, Apple says an eSIM from another provider requires an unlocked phone. To check, open Settings > General > About and look for No SIM Restrictions under Carrier Lock. Confirm that your phone supports eSIM and that the provider covers the destination and needed cellular bands.

Apple’s support article, “Use eSIM while travelling internationally with your iPhone,” states: “International roaming with an eSIM works just like roaming with a physical SIM.” Keeping both your home and travel lines active does not automatically prevent roaming charges: charges may still apply to the home line depending on how it is used and configured. Review line selection and roaming settings before departure.

Use a physical prepaid SIM when it fits your device and needs

A local or international prepaid physical SIM is another option for an unlocked, compatible phone. The Associated Press describes both physical SIM cards and eSIMs as travel connectivity choices, with country- or region-based packages. Before buying an international travel SIM card with data, verify the exact destination, included data, expiry, and whether voice and text are included. Availability and package terms vary by seller and destination.

Reduce data use without losing useful access

  • Download offline maps and playlists over Wi-Fi before heading out.
  • Use accommodation Wi-Fi for large downloads, app updates, backups, and long video calls when it is secure and reliable.
  • Turn off autoplay or lower streaming quality when using mobile data.
  • Check which apps can use background cellular data and disable it for apps that do not need it while traveling.
  • Monitor cellular usage during the trip and compare it with the plan’s remaining high-speed allowance and expiry date.

These steps can make a smaller bundle workable, but they do not substitute for checking whether the plan covers the places and days when you need connectivity.

Common mistakes that lead to the wrong plan size

  • Buying from a daily average alone: One hour of video can use far more data than hours of messaging or navigation. Include your high-consumption activities first.
  • Treating “unlimited” as full speed: Check what happens after any high-speed allowance is used; slower service may make video, calls, or work difficult.
  • Assuming a regional plan covers every stop: Verify the provider’s country list, including layovers, and whether data is shared across countries.
  • Running two lines without checking roaming: A travel eSIM does not necessarily disable charges on your home line. Review which line handles mobile data and the roaming settings for each line.
  • Ignoring a plan’s clock: An allowance that is large enough can still expire before your return if its validity starts earlier than expected or is shorter than the itinerary.
