A Grey’s Anatomy episode does not have one fixed data cost. Your total depends on the streaming service, device, quality setting, network conditions and episode length. Estimate it with this formula:

Data for one episode ≈ service rate in GB per hour × (episode minutes ÷ 60)

For a 45-minute episode, multiply the published hourly rate by 0.75. That produces a useful planning estimate, not a platform-measured total for a particular episode.

Quick estimates for a 45-minute episode

The following examples apply the formula to the official hourly figures published by Netflix and Disney+ in 2026. Actual usage can vary because streaming quality adapts and services may deliver different encodes for different devices.

Values marked “up to” or “approximately” are the services’ published rates, not guarantees for every stream. Rounding is to make a mobile-plan estimate easier to use.

How to calculate the data for your episode length

Find the service and quality mode you will use, then multiply its hourly rate by the episode’s runtime in hours. Convert minutes to hours by dividing by 60.

  1. Read the episode runtime. For example, 45 minutes becomes 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours.
  2. Locate the service’s rate for the device and setting. For example, Netflix High HD is listed at up to 3 GB/hour.
  3. Multiply: 3 × 0.75 = 2.25 GB.
  4. Round up slightly when checking whether you have enough allowance. The calculation does not account for adaptive changes, app overhead or brief playback beyond the listed runtime.

For a different runtime, the same rate scales linearly. A 30-minute episode uses one-half of the hourly figure; a 60-minute episode uses the full hourly figure. Use the actual runtime shown in your app rather than assuming every Grey’s Anatomy episode is the same length.

Netflix setting Published maximum 45-minute estimate What the label means for planning
Low 0.3 GB/hour 0.23 GB Lowest listed rate
Medium 0.7 GB/hour 0.53 GB Moderate use between Low and High
High SD 1 GB/hour 0.75 GB Standard-definition high setting
High HD 3 GB/hour 2.25 GB High-definition streaming
High 4K 7 GB/hour 5.25 GB Highest listed Netflix rate

Netflix’s mobile guidance also describes Automatic as about four hours per GB and Save Data as about six hours per GB. Those descriptions are broad planning estimates; they do not replace the quality-specific rates above. If you are watching over cellular data, choosing a lower-use mobile option is more predictable than leaving a high-quality mode selected.

Disney+ data use depends heavily on the receiving device

Disney+ publishes separate figures for mobile devices, browsers and televisions. The same episode can therefore consume several times more data on a 4K television than on a phone using Save Data.

Mobile devices

Disney+ mobile mode Approximate rate 45-minute estimate
Wi-Fi-only high quality 2.5 GB/hour 1.88 GB
Automatic 2 GB/hour 1.5 GB
Save Data 0.6 GB/hour 0.45 GB

“Wi-Fi-only high quality” is especially important to distinguish from a cellular setting: its name indicates that the mode is intended for Wi-Fi use. On a limited mobile plan, Save Data is the lowest of Disney+’s published mobile rates.

Smart TVs and TV-connected devices

Disney+ TV mode Approximate rate 45-minute estimate
Automatic 4K HDR 7.7 GB/hour 5.8 GB
Moderate 1080p 2 GB/hour 1.5 GB
Save Data 0.7 GB/hour 0.53 GB

A single 45-minute episode in Automatic 4K HDR is therefore estimated at roughly 5.8 GB, compared with about 0.53 GB in Save Data. The difference comes from the device and stream quality, not from Grey’s Anatomy itself.

Web browsers

Disney+ browser mode Approximate rate 45-minute estimate
Automatic 720p 4.2 GB/hour 3.15 GB
Save Data 0.6 GB/hour 0.45 GB

Do not apply the mobile rate to a browser session automatically. Disney+ lists a separate browser rate, and its Automatic 720p figure is substantially higher than mobile Save Data.

What Hulu’s bitrate figures mean

Hulu publishes bitrate tiers rather than one guaranteed GB-per-hour number. Its 2026 Help Center lists:

Hulu tier Published bitrate Simple one-hour conversion*
SD 1.5 Mbps About 0.68 GB/hour
720p HD 3 Mbps About 1.35 GB/hour
1080p HD 6 Mbps About 2.7 GB/hour
4K Ultra HD 16 Mbps About 7.2 GB/hour

*The conversions use bitrate × seconds ÷ eight bits per byte and decimal gigabytes. They are arithmetic illustrations, not Hulu’s guaranteed hourly totals.

Hulu says quality adapts to available bandwidth and varies by device and content. A stream can therefore move between bitrates during an episode, and the conversion does not include every source of network overhead. Treat the table as an order-of-magnitude guide: 4K has a much larger potential data cost than SD, but the exact total for your playback is not fixed.

Why two people can use different amounts for the same episode

  • Service: Netflix, Disney+ and Hulu publish different rate structures.
  • Quality setting: SD, HD and 4K streams carry different amounts of video information.
  • Device: Disney+’s published mobile, browser and TV figures are not interchangeable.
  • Adaptive streaming: Hulu explicitly says quality changes with available bandwidth; other services may also adjust delivery to conditions.
  • Episode duration: A longer episode scales the hourly rate upward.
  • Network conditions: Congestion, changing bandwidth and playback behavior can influence the delivered stream.

Because of these variables, a show title cannot be used as a reliable data-rate label. “Grey’s Anatomy uses X GB” is incomplete unless it also states the service, device, quality mode and runtime.

How to avoid exhausting a mobile data allowance

Before playback

  1. Check which service has the episode in your region and open its playback or data-use settings.
  2. Identify the receiving device: phone or tablet, browser, smart TV or another TV-connected device.
  3. Choose the service’s lower-data option when using cellular data. Netflix’s relevant choices include Low or Medium; Disney+ labels its lower option Save Data.
  4. If you intend to use HD or 4K, multiply that mode’s hourly rate by the number of episodes and their runtimes before starting.
  5. Check your phone carrier’s current usage meter after the first episode. That real-world reading is more useful for your connection than a generic estimate.

Planning a binge

Multiply the per-episode estimate by the number of episodes. For example, three 45-minute episodes at Netflix High HD would be approximately 2.25 × 3 = 6.75 GB. Three Disney+ mobile Save Data episodes would be approximately 0.45 × 3 = 1.35 GB. Keep the quality mode unchanged for this calculation; switching devices or settings changes the rate.

When Wi-Fi is available

Use a trusted, non-metered Wi-Fi connection for high-quality or 4K viewing. A television set to Disney+ Automatic 4K HDR can be estimated at about 5.8 GB for one 45-minute episode, so several episodes can consume a substantial amount of a home connection’s allowance even when your phone plan is unaffected.

Is Grey’s Anatomy available on the service you use?

Streaming catalogs are regional and can change. A 2023 Catalan Film Agency report lists Grey’s Anatomy on Disney+ in Italy, which demonstrates availability in that market at that time; it does not establish a universal or current Disney+ catalog listing. Search the service in your country before relying on any platform-specific estimate.

Practical takeaways for common situations

Your situation Useful planning choice
Very limited cellular plan Use the service’s Save Data, Low or equivalent mode and calculate from its published hourly rate.
Watching on a phone Use mobile-specific figures; do not substitute browser or TV rates.
Watching in a browser Use the browser rate when the service publishes one, such as Disney+’s 4.2 GB/hour Automatic 720p figure.
Watching on a 4K television Budget for the TV rate. Disney+ lists approximately 7.7 GB/hour for Automatic 4K HDR.
Unsure which quality Hulu will deliver Use the bitrate tier as a range indicator, then check actual usage after playback because Hulu adapts to bandwidth, device and content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will one 45-minute episode use more than 1 GB of mobile data?

It can. Netflix High HD is estimated at about 2.25 GB for 45 minutes, while Netflix Low is about 0.23 GB and Disney+ mobile Save Data is about 0.45 GB.

Does HD always use the same amount of data across services?

No. Services define quality modes differently, and device-specific rates vary. Use the rate published for your service, device and setting rather than a generic HD number.

Can I calculate usage for an episode that is not 45 minutes?

Yes. Divide the runtime in minutes by 60 and multiply by the applicable hourly rate. For example, a 30-minute episode uses one-half of that rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might my carrier’s usage meter differ from the estimate?

The figures are published or arithmetic estimates. Adaptive quality, changing network conditions, stream overhead and small differences in actual runtime can make measured usage higher or lower.
