Use your own cellular-data history to choose a phone-plan allowance. Check two or three complete billing cycles, count only data used over the mobile network (not Wi‑Fi), identify what caused the peaks, and select a tier with room for normal variation. Video quality, hotspot tethering, travel and automatic updates can change the result dramatically, so there is no single “average” allowance that fits everyone.
What “data” in a phone plan actually measures
Your allowance covers internet traffic sent through the carrier’s mobile network during the plan’s billing period. Browsing, streaming, navigation, photo backup, app updates and messaging over cellular all count. The same activities on a trusted Wi‑Fi connection normally do not use the mobile allowance.
That distinction is why total screen time is a poor guide. An hour of reading text-heavy websites may consume a small amount, while an hour of high-resolution video can use several gigabytes. A phone used for work all day on office Wi‑Fi may need less cellular data than a phone used for a short commute with video autoplay enabled.
Mobile data is measured for a period, usually the carrier’s monthly cycle. Your phone may use a different start date if its counter was manually reset, so always align the dates before interpreting a number.

Find your real cellular usage
On an iPhone
Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service in some regions). The screen shows total current-period cellular use and a per-app breakdown. Scroll down to see which apps are allowed to use mobile data. If the “current period” does not match your carrier cycle, record the phone’s dates and use the carrier account as the authoritative cross-check.
On Android
Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. Common paths are Settings > Network & internet > Internet > App data usage or Settings > Connections > Data usage. Set the usage-cycle dates to match your billing period when the phone allows it, then review both the total and individual apps.
Check more than one month
Review two or three completed cycles. One month may include a holiday, a broadband outage, a long trip or an unusual work schedule. If the phone counter was reset recently, download the carrier’s usage history instead of treating the partial counter as a monthly average.

Which activities use the most data?
The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) in Hong Kong publishes indicative smartphone estimates and warns that actual consumption can vary significantly by app, quality setting and network conditions. The figures below are useful for understanding scale, not for predicting an exact bill.
| Activity | Indicative cellular use | What changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-quality streaming video | About 700 MB per hour | Resolution, frame rate, advertising and preloading |
| High-quality streaming video | About 3 GB per hour | Higher resolution can multiply consumption |
| Email without an attachment | About 15 kB per message | Attachments and embedded images are larger |
| One webpage | About 1 MB | Images, video, advertising and page design |
| Normal-quality streaming music | About 4 MB per five minutes | Audio quality, downloads and caching |
| Photo sent in an instant-messaging app | About 200 kB | Original-resolution photos and video are much larger |
Video is usually the largest variable. Social applications may autoplay clips while you scroll, and a video call combines camera and incoming-video traffic. Music is comparatively light, especially when playlists are downloaded on Wi‑Fi, but continuous cellular listening still accumulates over a month.
Hotspot tethering counts too: a laptop connected through your phone can download operating-system updates, cloud files and high-resolution media that would be easy to overlook in the phone’s app list. Automatic photo backups and app updates can also consume data when their Wi‑Fi-only settings are disabled.

Use profiles to understand your pattern, not to copy someone else’s allowance
Ericsson’s Mobility Calculator illustrates how different habits produce very different monthly totals. These are modeled profiles, not a universal population average or a recommendation.

|---|---|---|
| Light usage | 1 GB | Some market segments are below 1 GB per month |
| Social-media-centric | 5 GB | Almost three hours per day on social media, excluding video |
| Video-centric | 19 GB | More than an hour per day of cellular video is common; video exceeds 90% of traffic |
| Heavy usage | 30 GB | Video dominates the profile |
The important lesson is that hours alone do not determine consumption. Two people can spend three hours in the same social app yet use radically different amounts if one watches mostly text and the other watches high-quality video over cellular.
A five-step method for choosing an allowance
- Record two or three billing cycles. Write down each cycle’s cellular total and mark any exceptional month. Use the carrier’s usage record when the phone’s counter and billing dates do not line up.
- Identify the drivers. In the per-app view, look for video and video-call services, social apps with autoplay, music, navigation, travel-related use, photo backup, app updates and hotspot traffic. Note whether each activity normally happens on Wi‑Fi.
- Separate routine use from one-off events. A weekend without home broadband or an international trip may explain a spike that should not define your normal plan. Conversely, a new commute or remote-work arrangement may make a recent increase permanent.
- Choose a tier above your normal high month. Leave practical headroom for ordinary variation rather than selecting a tier that matches your exact average. The required buffer is personal: a predictable low user needs less room than someone whose work or travel changes frequently.
- Recheck after a change. Review usage after switching home internet, starting a new job, adding regular hotspot sessions, changing video quality or taking frequent trips. A plan that fit last year may not fit the new routine.
Do you really need unlimited data?
Unlimited service is most defensible when your cellular use is both high and difficult to predict—for example, frequent travel, regular hotspot work or sustained video streaming away from Wi‑Fi. It can also buy convenience when the price difference from a suitable capped tier is small and the plan’s high-speed terms are clear.

A capped allowance can be sufficient when your recent usage is low or moderate, predictable and supported by reliable Wi‑Fi. Do not select unlimited solely because the label sounds safer: some “unlimited” plans reduce speed after a threshold, limit high-speed hotspot data, or apply different rules during congestion. Read the conditions rather than assuming unlimited means unlimited high-speed use for every purpose.
If you occasionally exceed a cap, compare the cost of an add-on or a larger tier with the recurring price of unlimited service. The cheapest choice depends on your market, taxes, network coverage and the carrier’s overage policy; the usage record tells you which allowances are plausible, not which offer is cheapest.
What published figures can—and cannot—tell you
Public statistics are useful context only when their geography, date and measurement are kept attached. They describe different things and should not be merged into one “average person” number.

The Canadian traffic figure cannot be used as a recommended Canadian plan size, and the UK allowance survey cannot be used to estimate your consumption. Your own cellular history remains the most relevant evidence.

Once you know the allowance range you need, compare offers using the same checklist. Exact prices, coverage, throttling and overage rules vary by country and carrier and must be verified in the current terms.
| Plan detail | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | Is the advertised amount recurring, and are taxes or required fees extra? | A cheaper allowance can cost more after add-ons or overage charges. |
| Included high-speed data | How many gigabytes receive the stated speed? | “Unlimited” may include a high-speed threshold. |
| After-limit behavior | Is data slowed, stopped, or charged? | The same allowance creates different risks under each rule. |
| Hotspot provision | Is tethering included, capped separately or prohibited? | Hotspot traffic can exhaust a phone-only allowance quickly. |
| Rollover and add-ons | Do unused data roll over, and what does extra data cost? | These features change the value of a cap for variable users. |
| Coverage | Does the network serve the places you live, work and travel? | A large allowance is not useful where service is unavailable. |
| Measurement period | When does the carrier reset the allowance? | It must match the period used in your phone’s usage analysis. |
A July 7, 2026 consumer article from AT&T illustrates one US carrier’s 5 GB, 15 GB and unlimited examples, with hotspot and extra-data options described separately. Those tiers are a provider-specific example, not a general market comparison or endorsement.

Prevent surprises without buying more data
- Set video apps to a lower mobile quality or enable their “Wi‑Fi only” download option.
- Disable autoplay on cellular connections where the app provides that control.
- Allow photo backups and large app updates only over Wi‑Fi unless mobile backup is essential.
- Use offline maps, music and podcasts downloaded before travel.
- Review hotspot-connected devices and stop background updates on laptops and tablets.
- Turn on the phone’s data warning or limit feature, but keep the carrier’s meter as the billing reference.
- Check roaming terms before crossing a border; travel can create charges or a separate allowance even when domestic use is predictable.
If usage suddenly jumps, sort the app list by cellular consumption and compare the date of the increase with travel, a home-internet outage, a new video setting or a hotspot session. Correcting the underlying setting may be cheaper and more reliable than permanently moving to a larger plan.
When to recalculate
Recalculate after changing jobs or commutes, replacing home broadband, adopting regular video calls, starting frequent hotspot work, changing streaming quality, adding a tablet to a hotspot, or traveling more often. Also check after an operating-system update if your phone reports an unexpected change in background usage. A two- or three-cycle review after the change gives a more dependable baseline than the first unusual month.
The practical answer
There is no universally correct number of gigabytes. Measure cellular use over complete billing cycles, understand which activities create it, add room for your normal high month, and then compare plan rules for speed, hotspot use, overages and coverage. National figures and modeled profiles explain why allowances differ; they do not replace your own usage record.
