Lossless music costs more in network data and local storage than lower-quality audio, but it does not automatically require new hardware. FLAC compresses audio without discarding its encoded information; a compatible phone, computer, or audio system may already play it. High-resolution playback is more demanding: check your device’s DAC and connection before buying anything.
What lossless means for storage and playback
Lossless audio preserves the audio information in the encoded source while reducing the space needed compared with uncompressed PCM. FLAC is one such codec, designed to reduce storage needs and decode with relatively modest computing resources. The format can support 1–8 channels, 4–32 bits per sample, and sample rates from 1 to 1,048,575 Hz; these are format limits, not typical listening settings. The IETF’s FLAC standard, RFC 9639, describes this design.
CD-quality audio is typically stereo at 16-bit/44.1 kHz. High-resolution lossless audio can use higher bit depths and sample rates, which may increase streaming data use and download size. Lossless does not mean uncompressed, and “high-resolution” is not a synonym for every lossless file.

Data use depends on the service and the audio being delivered. As service-specific guidance, TIDAL estimates up to 10 MB per minute for its 16-bit/44.1 kHz High tier and up to 40 MB per minute for its Max tier, which can reach 24-bit/192 kHz. TIDAL says actual use varies with sample rate, so these figures are not guaranteed rates for every track or a universal lossless-file calculation. TIDAL’s HiRes FLAC support page also says Max may fall back to FLAC or AAC when a higher-resolution source is unavailable.

Apple likewise cautions that lossless streaming consumes significantly more network data than standard quality. If you stream on a metered mobile plan, consider using a lower quality setting on cellular data or downloading music over Wi-Fi. TIDAL recommends a steady connection of at least 1.5 to 2 Mbps for its High and Max streaming experience; treat that as TIDAL’s service guidance, not a guarantee for all services or network conditions.
How much device storage will downloads need?
Lossless downloads take significantly more space than lower-quality downloads, and higher-resolution audio generally uses more storage than lower-resolution lossless audio. Apple notes both effects in its lossless audio support guidance. The space required for a personal library depends on its track count, duration, encoding, and chosen quality, so there is no single drive capacity that suits everyone.

Before downloading a large collection, check the available storage shown in your music app or device settings and download a representative selection to see how quickly it grows. If you keep an offline library or archive, an external drive is optional; choose its capacity from your actual library size and backup needs rather than assuming lossless requires a particular drive.

Do you need a new DAC or other hardware?
Not necessarily. Apple lists wired headphones, receivers, powered speakers, and built-in speakers as playback routes on supported devices. It says an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC) may be needed for sample rates above 48 kHz in certain cases. TIDAL advises checking whether the listening device’s DAC supports 24-bit/192 kHz and recommends wired or Wi-Fi playback for its highest tier.

Start by checking the device you already use and the connection path between it and your headphones or speakers. Wireless links, adapters, receivers, and app settings can affect which format reaches the output. If you specifically want to play audio above 48 kHz, confirm that the device and connection support the intended rate; only consider an external DAC if your existing setup does not. Neither lossless listening in general nor CD-quality playback automatically calls for a separate DAC.

These figures describe TIDAL’s service tiers and guidance, not every service’s catalog or delivery behavior. The technical specifications alone do not establish that every listener will hear a difference. The cited format and support documentation describes encoding, storage, and compatibility; it does not provide a controlled listening study demonstrating a universal audible advantage.

A practical way to choose
- Decide how you listen. If you mostly stream on cellular data, account for the higher use TIDAL estimates for lossless tiers. If you download, check device storage and the space used by a sample batch.
- Choose a resolution your setup can use. CD-quality lossless is 16-bit/44.1 kHz in TIDAL’s High tier. For higher rates, verify the audio source and the capabilities of the device and DAC.
- Check existing hardware before shopping. Try a supported wired output or existing speakers and confirm playback settings. Add a DAC only if your device cannot deliver the resolution you want.
- Keep data and storage in the decision. Use Wi-Fi downloads where possible, and size optional external storage around the library you intend to keep and its backup plan.
