There is no standard amount a virtual power plant (VPP) will save every household. The strongest recent comparison is from Australia: for financial year 2025–26, median annual bills for VPP participants in the National Electricity Market were $762–$1,093 (57–63%) lower than bills for regular customers. That is an observed difference between groups—not a guarantee or proof that joining a VPP alone caused the entire gap.

What the available bill comparison shows

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) compared residential bills in the National Electricity Market using Australian Energy Market Operator distributed-energy register data and retailer billing data. For financial year 2025–26, it found that VPP participants had median annual bills $762–$1,093 (57–63%) lower than regular customers. ACCC, State of the Energy Market 2026

This is the best quantified household comparison in the available evidence, but it is not a personal savings estimate. The participating and non-participating groups may differ in ways besides VPP membership, so the entire bill gap cannot be attributed to enrollment. The ACCC says VPP households can reduce bills by shifting more electricity use away from peak periods and receiving greater reimbursement for power supplied to the grid than solar-and-battery households that are not in a VPP. ACCC, State of the Energy Market 2026

For context, the same Australian comparison found median annual bills $329–$909 (20–52%) lower for customers with solar and a battery than for regular customers. That separate comparison does not establish a universal battery payback or predict what a new battery will save at your home. ACCC, State of the Energy Market 2026

Bill savings, credits and grid benefits are different

A VPP links batteries so their stored electricity can be coordinated, including supplying power to the grid during peak demand. A household may benefit through lower electricity use during expensive periods and program compensation for energy or capacity made available. The actual result depends on the local tariff, program formula and battery use.

  • Lower bill: you pay less to your retailer, for example by using stored electricity rather than buying power at a peak rate.
  • Bill credit or payment: a program may compensate you for battery performance or exported capacity. Check whether the amount is a credit on the bill, cash, or conditional on events or performance.
  • System-wide savings: the ACCC reports an AEMO estimate that about $7.2 billion in generation and network investment could be avoided by 2050 if approximately 53% of battery customers participate in VPPs under AEMO’s step-change scenario. This is a projected grid benefit, not money paid to an individual household. ACCC, State of the Energy Market 2026

Participation is not universal: the ACCC reported that around 24% of customers with installed batteries were in a VPP as of January 2026. ACCC, State of the Energy Market 2026

Why VPP offers pay differently

Programs use different eligibility rules and payment methods, so a headline amount from one utility is not a national rate. For example, the NSW Government says households generally need an eligible grid-connected battery, a participating provider and a compatible retailer to qualify for its incentive. Providers may differ in payment for excess electricity, when they can access the battery and how much capacity they can use. NSW Government: Virtual power plants

Program example Published compensation Scope and conditions
Tesla SRP Battery Partner program Up to $264 per Powerwall per year in energy bill credits For eligible Salt River Project electric customers with a supported battery or inverter. Dispatch may occur for grid events; the program describes compensation based on average kW performance and a backup-reserve option. Tesla SRP Battery Partner program
Arizona Public Service (APS) Bring Your Own Device pilot $110 per kW annually, based on seasonal average battery export capacity An Arizona Corporation Commission-approved pilot for up to 5,000 APS residential customers, with up to 60 events per year. Events are expected to last one to four hours during the summer period. These are pilot-specific terms, not a general U.S. rate. Arizona Corporation Commission notice
Austin Energy 2026 battery demand-response pilot Not stated in the announcement The initial pilot supports Tesla, FranklinWH, SolarEdge and Enphase systems. This is a local pilot, not evidence that VPP enrollment is generally available. Austin Energy announcement, March 24, 2026

The first two figures cannot be compared as if they were equivalent annual savings: one is a maximum per-battery bill credit, while the other uses exported capacity as its payment basis. Neither establishes what a particular household will actually earn.

What to check before joining

Ask the utility or provider for the written program terms and compare them with your current electricity tariff. Focus on the details that determine both compensation and how much control you retain over the battery:

  • Payment basis: Is compensation a guaranteed upfront incentive, event-based earnings or bill credit? Is it calculated per kW, per kWh, per battery or by measured performance?
  • Dispatch: How many events may occur, how long do they last, and when can the provider call on the battery? Can you opt out, and are there penalties or reduced payments?
  • Backup reserve: What minimum charge must remain for outages, and who can change that setting?
  • Eligibility: Does the program accept your utility, service area, retailer, battery model and inverter?
  • Contract and exports: What is the contract term, how are exported units compensated, and can joining prevent participation in another program?

These terms matter because a program’s access to stored energy can affect how much remains for household use, while the payment formula determines whether dispatch is worth it for your circumstances.

Can VPP payments repay a home battery?

The figures above do not establish a universal net payback period. The available comparisons do not combine a specific household’s battery purchase and financing costs with its tariff, solar exports, electricity use and VPP compensation. A VPP payment on its own is therefore not enough to conclude that buying a battery will pay for itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a useful estimate, compare your expected total bill with and without the program, including any battery and financing costs, export credits, potential bill reductions, program payments and the effect of dispatch on backup power. Use the provider’s actual eligibility and contract terms rather than an advertised maximum.
