Cellucor’s current C4 Original product page lists 200 mg of caffeine per serving and recommends taking one scoop 20–30 minutes before a workout. An older Cellucor page lists 150 mg per serving, and other C4 products have had different amounts. Check the Supplement Facts panel and serving directions on your own container before using it: the product name alone does not establish how much caffeine is in your tub.

How much caffeine is in C4 Original?

The answer depends on the product version. Cellucor’s current C4 Original product page lists 200 mg of caffeine per serving. An older Cellucor C4 Original page lists 150 mg. Those conflicting manufacturer pages do not establish exactly when the formula changed or which packages correspond to each amount, so treat the label on your specific container as the practical reference.

Check the Supplement Facts panel for caffeine per serving, then check the serving directions to see what the manufacturer means by a serving. Do not assume a scoop from one tub is equivalent to a scoop from another, or that a remembered caffeine amount applies to a new purchase. If the printed label is unclear or conflicts with the page for your product, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing.

The current product page’s 200 mg figure and the older page’s 150 mg figure are product-page statements, not results from independent testing of every container. Neither figure should be applied to all products in the C4 family.

Why the C4 name does not give one caffeine answer

C4 is a product family, not one fixed formula. In a comparison article published by Cellucor around 2021, the company gave the following caffeine amounts per serving for four variants:

Variant in Cellucor’s circa-2021 comparison Caffeine per serving reported in that comparison
C4 Original 150 mg
C4 Sport 135 mg
C4 Extreme 200 mg
C4 Ultimate 300 mg

These are historical figures reported in Cellucor’s comparison article, not confirmation of the formulas currently on shelves. The same article described other variants, but its figures should not be used to identify the contents of a current container. Formulas and labels can differ by product and version; verify the exact name and Supplement Facts panel rather than choosing a number based on “C4” alone.

The comparison is also why it is risky to use a figure found in an old review or product discussion without checking its date and exact variant. A number can be accurate for one version and still be wrong for the tub in front of you. When comparing products, record the precise variant, caffeine per labeled serving, and serving directions shown on each package. Also compare the recommended interval before exercise only when it is stated for that exact product version. Cellucor’s current C4 Original page gives a 20–30 minute direction; that interval should not automatically be assigned to every C4 variant.

The historical comparison shows meaningful differences: its listed amounts range from 135 mg for Sport to 300 mg for Ultimate. But those figures are not a current product-by-product shopping guide. If you are choosing among tubs, use the current package information rather than assuming the old ranking or numbers still apply. The sources do not establish current caffeine amounts or directions for every C4 variant.

When should you take C4 before a workout?

Cellucor’s current C4 Original product page directs users to mix one scoop with 6–8 fl oz of water and consume it 20–30 minutes before a workout. It also says beginners may start with half a scoop. These are the manufacturer’s directions, not evidence that this interval is optimal for every person or workout.

An older C4 Original product page gives a different mixing direction: one level scoop in 6 fl oz of water, taken 20–30 minutes before training. Use the serving and mixing instructions printed on your own container rather than combining directions from two product-page versions. If you are new to the product, follow the container’s directions; the current page’s half-scoop suggestion is not a substitute for checking the label’s serving information.

  1. Identify the exact variant. Read the front label, not just the C4 name or color of the packaging.
  2. Read the Supplement Facts panel. Note caffeine per serving and the serving size described on that package.
  3. Measure according to the label. Use the specified serving; do not assume a different scoop or an informal “scoopful” is equivalent.
  4. Use the timing stated for that version. For current C4 Original, the page says 20–30 minutes before exercise. Follow the package if its directions differ.
  5. Count the rest of your day’s caffeine. Consider other caffeinated drinks or products before adding a pre-workout serving.

The timing instruction answers how Cellucor says to use the product. It does not promise a particular workout result, and the available product-page information does not establish that taking it at that interval improves performance for everyone. The cited pages also do not provide a proven best interval for every C4 version or for every person. If you are comparing products, do not infer an equivalent timing recommendation from the Original page.

How to put a C4 serving in context with daily caffeine

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that 400 mg of caffeine a day is an amount “not generally associated with negative effects” for most adults. That is broad consumer guidance, not a recommended target, a personal allowance, or a guarantee that a particular person will tolerate that amount. The FDA notes that people differ in sensitivity and in how quickly they eliminate caffeine.

For a simple tally, add the caffeine listed for C4 to the caffeine from other sources you consume that day. For example, if your container lists 200 mg per serving, one serving contributes 200 mg toward your day’s total; it does not mean that another 200 mg is automatically appropriate. The 400 mg figure is not a safety line for every person, and the caffeine content of other foods, drinks, or supplements must be counted rather than ignored.

  • Use the caffeine quantity on your own C4 label, not an amount remembered from a different product version.
  • Include other caffeine you have already consumed or expect to consume that day.
  • Do not interpret the FDA’s general figure as a personal prescription or as a reason to take more.
  • If caffeine affects you strongly, a lower amount or avoiding it may be more appropriate; the available guidance does not define an individual dose.

People with relevant health conditions or who take medicines should discuss caffeine with a health professional. The FDA also advises consultation for people who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Those situations call for individualized advice rather than relying on a general adult figure or a product serving suggestion. The 400 mg figure is specifically general guidance for most adults; it should not be used to decide what is appropriate in these circumstances.

What if you work out near bedtime?

Caffeine can disrupt sleep, but the available sleep-study evidence does not set a universal cutoff for one serving of C4. In a 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, Christopher Drake, Timothy Roehrs, John Shambroom, and Thomas Roth tested 400 mg of caffeine at bedtime and at three and six hours before bedtime. All three timings produced significant sleep disturbance relative to placebo. The authors concluded that caffeine taken six hours before bed had important disruptive effects on sleep.

That study tested 400 mg, which is more than the 200 mg serving listed on Cellucor’s current C4 Original page and more than the 150 mg on the older page. Its results support caution about late-day caffeine, but they do not show exactly how one serving of C4 will affect your sleep, nor do they establish a precise number of hours that is safe for everyone. Individual sensitivity and the amount already consumed also matter.

If you train late, consider the time until your intended bedtime, the caffeine amount on your own label, and what you have already consumed. If caffeine has previously made it harder for you to sleep, that personal response is relevant even when your planned dose is below the study dose. Do not treat the study’s six-hour finding as a guaranteed safe window or a universal prohibition; it is evidence from a specific dose and study design. The study tested caffeine at three specified times, not a range of doses or every possible workout schedule.

Common mistakes when checking C4 caffeine

  • Using an amount for the wrong variant. Original, Sport, Extreme, and Ultimate were reported with different caffeine quantities in Cellucor’s circa-2021 comparison.
  • Assuming an old figure is current. Cellucor’s older Original page lists 150 mg, while its current page lists 200 mg. Check your container rather than trying to infer its formulation from page age alone.
  • Confusing a serving with a scoop. Scoop directions and serving information belong to a particular label version. Follow the package in hand.
  • Counting only pre-workout caffeine. The FDA’s daily guidance concerns caffeine from the whole day, so include other sources.
  • Assuming a general limit guarantees tolerance. The FDA’s 400 mg guidance is for most adults and does not account for every individual’s sensitivity, health conditions, or medications.
  • Applying the sleep study as a C4-specific rule. It tested 400 mg at defined times, not C4 Original at every dose or in every user.
  • Combining directions from different versions. The current and older Original pages give different water amounts and describe their scoop instructions differently. Follow one applicable container label rather than mixing details.
  • Assuming all C4 products share Original’s timing directions. The current page’s 20–30 minute direction is for C4 Original; do not extend it to other variants without checking their labels.

What the available figures do—and do not—tell you

The caffeine amounts above come from Cellucor product information and a company comparison article, not a direct clinical trial of C4 Original. They tell you what those pages state for their versions; they do not establish the caffeine content of every product currently sold or independently verify a particular container. The conflicting 150 mg and 200 mg Original figures make the package label especially important.

Likewise, the timing on the product page is a manufacturer recommendation, while the FDA’s daily amount is general population guidance and the sleep study concerns a specific 400 mg dose. These answer different questions: how Cellucor directs use, what the FDA says about typical adult daily intake, and how a tested dose affected sleep in a study. Keep those distinctions intact when deciding whether and when to use a serving.

When should I take C4 pre-workout?

Cellucor’s current C4 Original page says to mix one scoop with 6–8 fl oz of water and consume it 20–30 minutes before a workout. It also says beginners may start with half a scoop. Treat this as the manufacturer’s direction for that version, and follow your own container’s label.

How long before a workout should I take C4?

For current C4 Original, Cellucor recommends 20–30 minutes before exercise. The older Original page gives the same interval but different water and scoop wording. Check the directions for your specific product; the cited pages do not establish one timing rule for every C4 variant or person.

How much caffeine do other C4 products have?

Cellucor’s circa-2021 comparison listed 135 mg per serving for Sport, 200 mg for Extreme, and 300 mg for Ultimate; it listed Original at 150 mg. These are historical comparison figures, not confirmation of current formulas, so verify the label on the exact variant you have.

Can I take C4 late in the day?

Caffeine may disrupt sleep. A 2013 study found significant sleep disturbance after 400 mg taken at bedtime and at three or six hours before bedtime, but it did not test one C4 serving or establish a universal cutoff. Consider your planned bedtime, total caffeine, and your own response; consult a health professional if your circumstances warrant individualized advice.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Cellucor’s current C4 Original page lists 200 mg of caffeine per serving, while an older page lists 150 mg. Check your container’s Supplement Facts panel and serving directions; do not apply Original’s amount or timing to every C4 variant. For current Original, Cellucor recommends one scoop in 6–8 fl oz of water 20–30 minutes before exercise, with half a scoop as a possible beginner starting point. Count caffeine from the whole day, remember that the FDA’s 400 mg guidance is not an individual target, and use extra caution with late-day caffeine because it may affect sleep.
