For the original Magico A3, the manufacturer recommends an amplifier rated for at least 50 watts RMS and no more than 300 watts RMS. The speakers are rated at 4 ohms, so check an amplifier’s output into a 4-ohm load—not only its more prominently advertised 8-ohm rating. That range is a compatibility guide, not a claim that every room or listener needs the same wattage.
This answer applies to the original A3. Magico announced a redesigned A3 2027 on October 1, 2026, and the original A3 specifications should not be assumed to apply to that generation.
What the original Magico A3 specifications say
Magico’s A3 product page and owner’s manual specify 88 dB sensitivity, 4-ohm impedance, and recommended amplifier power of 50 watts RMS minimum to 300 watts RMS maximum. The company’s 2017 launch announcement gave the same power range and identified Q1 2018 as the planned ship date. These are manufacturer specifications for the original A3, not a wattage prescription for every listening situation.

In practical terms, use 50–300 watts RMS as the manufacturer’s recommended operating range. The lower figure is the stated minimum recommendation; the upper figure is the stated maximum recommended power. It does not mean the speakers continuously draw that many watts, nor that a 300-watt amplifier is necessary to make them work well.

RMS is a way amplifier specifications describe continuous power capability. Music playback varies moment by moment: average power can be modest while brief musical peaks demand more. A suitable amplifier needs to deliver clean power at the levels you use, including those peaks, without being driven into clipping or otherwise operated unsafely.
Why the 4-ohm rating matters when choosing an amp
Impedance is the electrical load a speaker presents to an amplifier. The A3’s nominal rating is 4 ohms, so an amplifier’s stated output into 4 ohms is the most relevant figure when comparing its power capability with the speaker’s recommendation. A wattage printed only for an 8-ohm load does not, by itself, tell you how much power the amplifier can provide to the A3.
Look for the amplifier’s continuous power specification at 4 ohms and read any conditions attached to it. The useful question is not just “How many watts?” but “How much clean power can this amplifier deliver into the load I will connect?” If a specification gives only an 8-ohm rating, or does not make its measurement conditions clear, it leaves an important part of the comparison unanswered.

Nominal impedance is a rating, not a promise that a speaker’s electrical load stays at exactly 4 ohms at every frequency. For that reason, a headline wattage number alone cannot establish how an amplifier will behave with a real speaker. The practical check is whether the amplifier is specified as suitable for a 4-ohm load and can operate cleanly at the intended listening level.
How to interpret the sensitivity figures
Magico lists the original A3 at 88 dB sensitivity. An independent Hi-Fi Choice review reported a measured sensitivity of 87 dB at 2.83 volts and explained that this corresponds to 83 dB per watt for a 4-ohm speaker. Those numbers use different reference descriptions, so they should not be read as directly contradictory ratings.
The conversion matters because sensitivity can be expressed relative to voltage or power. At a nominal 4-ohm load, 2.83 volts corresponds to about 2 watts, rather than 1 watt. Since doubling power raises level by approximately 3 dB under idealized conditions, a voltage-based figure at 2.83 volts can be about 3 dB higher than the corresponding 1-watt figure. Hi-Fi Choice’s 87 dB at 2.83 V and 83 dB/W are consistent with that conversion.

The product-page figure of 88 dB should therefore be understood as Magico’s published specification, while the review’s 87 dB figure is an independent measurement with its reference explicitly stated. The available figures do not establish that they were measured using identical methods or conditions. For amp matching, the 4-ohm load and manufacturer power range are more actionable than trying to treat the two sensitivity numbers as interchangeable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does 300 watts mean you need a 300-watt amplifier?
No. Three hundred watts is the top of Magico’s recommended range for the original A3; it is not the minimum required power. A listener whose room, distance, and preferred volume call for less power does not need to buy an amplifier rated at the upper limit just to meet the specification.
At the same time, choosing a very low-powered amplifier can reduce the margin available for loud passages and brief peaks. If the amplifier is pushed beyond its clean operating capability, it can clip. The A3’s recommended minimum of 50 watts RMS provides a manufacturer reference point, but it cannot predict the required headroom for a specific room or listening habit.

Think of the range as a boundary for selecting compatible amplification, not a target to hit at every moment. The right choice is an amplifier that is suitable for a 4-ohm speaker and has enough clean output for your distance, room, and peak-level needs. More rated power is not automatically better if it is unnecessary for your use, and a high rating does not excuse unsafe operation.
What the power range can—and cannot—tell you
A simplified calculation can illustrate how power changes output level, but it cannot predict the exact sound pressure in a listener’s room. Under idealized conditions, doubling amplifier power raises level by roughly 3 dB; multiplying power by ten raises it by roughly 10 dB. Using the independent review’s 83 dB/W equivalent as a reference, 50 watts is about 17 dB above 1 watt and 300 watts is about 24.8 dB above 1 watt. That gives a rough one-metre illustration of about 100 dB at 50 watts and about 108 dB at 300 watts.
Those are mathematical illustrations, not measured maximum-output claims for the A3 and not forecasts of what you will hear. They assume the speaker’s sensitivity figure scales ideally with power and omit factors such as listening distance, room acoustics, speaker placement, musical content, and limits in the speaker or amplifier. No room-specific wattage calculator or measured maximum sound level for the A3 is published.

In use, the same amplifier can feel adequate in one setup and run short of headroom in another. A larger listening distance, a room that absorbs or disperses sound, or a preference for high peak levels can change the amount of amplifier reserve that is useful. The manufacturer’s rating does not convert these variables into one universal wattage requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose an amplifier for your A3 system
- Confirm the speaker generation. Check that your speakers are the original A3 before applying the 50–300 W RMS recommendation. If the model is marked A3 2027, use that generation’s own current specification sheet rather than transferring the earlier figures.
- Check continuous power at 4 ohms. Find the amplifier’s rated output into 4 ohms and confirm that the manufacturer considers it suitable for that load. Do not use an 8-ohm number as the only basis for the decision.
- Match output to your listening conditions. Consider how far you sit from the speakers, the room, the loudness you normally use, and how much peak-level reserve you want. These variables affect the practical need for headroom; the A3 ratings alone do not specify a room-specific answer.
- Prioritize clean operation. Choose an amplifier that can play at your intended levels without clipping or being pushed beyond its operating limits. Avoid treating the largest available wattage rating as a substitute for checking compatibility and clean output.
- Check system fit after power capability. Once the 4-ohm load and power needs are addressed, check the amplifier’s inputs and other practical features against the rest of your system. These considerations help determine whether it will work in your setup, but they do not change the A3’s published power rating.
This process can identify an appropriate class of amplifier without pretending there is one ideal model for every A3 owner. Magico’s published specifications establish a power range, not a model ranking or endorsement.
Common amplifier-matching mistakes
- Reading the maximum as the required wattage: 300 watts RMS is the upper end of the manufacturer’s recommended range, not the minimum power needed to operate the A3.
- Comparing only 8-ohm output figures: the A3 is rated at 4 ohms. A figure that omits 4-ohm performance leaves the key load comparison unresolved.
- Comparing sensitivity figures without checking the reference: the manufacturer’s 88 dB listing and Hi-Fi Choice’s 87 dB at 2.83 V / 83 dB/W measurement are not stated using the same reference convention.
- Assuming a wattage number guarantees clean sound: rated output does not tell you by itself whether an amplifier will be driven into clipping at your preferred level.
- Applying original-A3 advice to the redesign: the A3 2027 is a new generation, and the original specifications do not establish its amplifier recommendation.
Original A3 versus A3 2027: check before buying
Magico’s news listing announced the A3 2027 on October 1, 2026. The available account describes a redesign involving the cabinet, drivers, and crossover, but does not establish an official amplifier-power range for that version. The original model’s published figures remain useful only when the speaker in question is the original A3.

If you are buying an A3 2027 or matching an amplifier to one, verify the specification sheet for that specific generation. Do not infer its impedance, sensitivity, or power recommendation from the earlier model just because the names are similar. If the sheet is not available to you, ask the seller or Magico to confirm the current figures before making a compatibility decision.
Bottom line for the original Magico A3
Start with Magico’s stated recommendation of 50–300 watts RMS and the speaker’s 4-ohm nominal impedance. Choose based on clean 4-ohm output and the headroom your room and listening habits call for; do not assume the upper limit is a requirement. Confirm the generation first, because the redesigned A3 2027 needs its own verified specifications.
