A 1-inch pneumatic impact wrench commonly requires 90 psi at the tool while it is operating. Compressor airflow is model-specific: the manufacturer examples covered here list between 9 and 12 CFM average, while some publish much higher “at-load” figures. Choose a compressor by its delivered airflow at the required pressure, then verify hose, fittings, regulator, duty cycle and any other tools sharing the system. There is no single tank size, horsepower rating or CFM number that fits every 1-inch impact wrench.
What a 1-inch impact wrench actually needs
Two specifications determine whether a pneumatic impact wrench will work properly: pressure and airflow. They answer different questions.
- Pressure is the air pressure the wrench must receive. The 1-inch models cited here specify 90 psi.
- Airflow is how much air the tool consumes while operating. It is reported in CFM, but manufacturers may mean average consumption, consumption at load, or another test condition.
A compressor can show a high pressure on its tank gauge and still fail to run the wrench if its delivered airflow is too low or if the hose, fittings or regulator restrict flow. Conversely, a compressor that supplies enough air cannot compensate for a regulator set below the tool’s requirement. Pressure must be checked at the wrench inlet while the trigger is engaged, not only at an idle tank or regulator.
Published pressure and airflow figures by model
The following specifications come from manufacturer product pages and a catalog. They demonstrate why the exact model number matters; they are not a controlled comparison under one common test method.

| 1-inch wrench example | Stated pressure | Air consumption as published | Minimum hose size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ingersoll Rand 295A | 90 psi | 46 CFM at load; 11 CFM average | 3/4 inch |
| Ingersoll Rand 290 | 90 psi | 55 CFM at load; 10 CFM average | 1/2 inch |
| Ingersoll Rand 293 | 90 psi | 64 CFM at load; 12 CFM average | 3/4 inch |
| King Tony 33862200 composite wrench | 90 psi | 9 CFM at 90 psi | Not shown in the cited catalog excerpt |
Do not average these numbers together or treat an “at load” value as interchangeable with an “average” value. The labels describe different published measures. A wrench listed at 11 CFM average is not necessarily a tool that needs only 11 CFM during every sustained loaded event.
The general shop-chart figure
An Ingersoll Rand automotive-shop chart gives 12 CFM for a 1-inch impact wrench at 70–90 psig. The chart says this is an average based on typical on-load use and warns that it is not accurate for every make or model. Use it only as general shop-planning context; use the selected wrench’s own specification for compressor sizing.
How to size the compressor
Size the air source around the wrench’s exact requirement and the way you will use it. The decisive specification is the compressor’s delivered airflow at the pressure required by the tool, not its maximum advertised pressure or tank volume alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identify the exact wrench. Record the model number and consult its current manual or manufacturer specification.
- Record operating pressure. For the cited 1-inch models this is 90 psi, but do not assume another model uses the same setting.
- Record the airflow definition. Note whether the manufacturer reports average CFM, at-load CFM, or a value tied to a stated test condition.
- Check compressor delivery at pressure. Compare the wrench’s requirement with the compressor’s delivered or usable CFM at the same pressure. A compressor’s peak pressure rating does not tell you how much air it can deliver while the wrench is running.
- Account for the duty cycle. Intermittent loosening of a few fasteners places a different demand on the system from repeated, sustained work. Include other tools that may operate at the same time.
- Check the complete air path. The compressor, receiver, regulator, couplers, fittings and hose must pass enough air without causing the tool-inlet pressure to collapse.
- Verify under real operation. Run the wrench and measure pressure at its inlet. If pressure drops below the specification, the system is not delivering the required pressure at the point of use, regardless of what the tank gauge showed at rest.
The available specifications do not establish a universal tank volume, horsepower, reserve percentage or compressor model. Those choices depend on the selected wrench, its consumption definition, the work pattern and concurrent demand.

Why tank size alone is the wrong answer
A receiver tank stores compressed air and can support short bursts, but its stated volume does not reveal the compressor’s continuing airflow at 90 psi. Two compressors with similarly sized tanks can have different delivered CFM, and a large tank will eventually fall in pressure if the compressor cannot replenish air as quickly as the wrench consumes it.
For occasional, brief use, stored air may delay a pressure drop. For repeated heavy work, the compressor’s sustained delivery and the pressure it can maintain at the tool become more important. Select the compressor using its pressure-specific airflow specification and intended duty cycle rather than asking only for a tank size.
Hose, fittings and regulator requirements
Hose requirements vary even among the cited 1-inch tools:

- Setup guidance for the Ingersoll Rand 2922 Series specifies a minimum 1/2-inch hose.
These are model-specific instructions, not a universal rule for every 1-inch wrench. Follow the manual for your tool. A hose that is smaller than specified, excessively long, kinked or fitted with restrictive couplers can create a pressure drop even when the compressor itself is capable of the required output.

Set up the air path
- Use a supply outlet and regulator that can pass the wrench’s required airflow.
- Fit the minimum hose diameter specified for the exact wrench; use compatible fittings throughout the path.
- Set the regulator according to the tool specification, then check pressure at the wrench inlet with the tool running.
- Inspect quick-connect couplers, filters, separators and valves for restrictions or contamination.
- Use an impact-rated socket appropriate for the wrench and the application, as recommended in the Ingersoll Rand setup guidance.
The manufacturer’s setup instruction states: The air system must maintain the required pressure at the tool while the tool is operating.
That operating condition is the important test; a static gauge reading is not enough.
Diagnosing a weak or slow 1-inch impact
If the wrench stalls, turns slowly or cannot remove a fastener, work through the air system before assuming the tool is defective.
Pressure is correct at rest but falls when the trigger is pulled
Measure directly at the tool inlet during operation. A falling reading indicates inadequate delivered airflow or a restriction somewhere between the compressor and wrench. Check hose diameter and length, couplers, fittings, regulator capacity, filters and partially closed valves. Also consider other tools drawing air at the same time.

Compare the compressor’s delivered CFM at the operating pressure with the wrench’s published airflow figure and definition. A compressor selected from its maximum-pressure number alone may not supply enough flow. Verify that the hose and fittings meet the model’s minimum requirements.

The wrench works briefly, then loses power
This pattern can indicate that stored tank air is being depleted faster than the compressor can replace it. Observe pressure while the wrench is used repeatedly and compare the result with the compressor’s pressure-specific delivery. Reduce simultaneous air demand and allow recovery while checking for restrictions.
The regulator or coupler appears to be the bottleneck
Inspect the regulator and couplers for a restricted port, incorrect size or damaged mechanism. Test with a known-good, adequately sized air path while keeping the tool’s specified pressure. Do not raise pressure indiscriminately to compensate for a restriction; excessive pressure can damage equipment and does not correct insufficient airflow.

Air-consumption figures need their labels preserved. For example, the 295A is listed at 11 CFM average and 46 CFM at load; the 290 at 10 CFM average and 55 CFM at load; and the 293 at 12 CFM average and 64 CFM at load. Those pairs are not contradictory: they describe different operating measures published by the manufacturer.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When comparing a compressor with a wrench, make the comparison on like terms. If the wrench specification is an average figure, identify how the manufacturer defines that average. If an at-load figure is provided, understand that it may represent a high-demand condition rather than the tool’s entire working cycle. Do not combine an average wrench value with an at-load compressor value, or vice versa, without understanding both definitions.

Pressure settings and safe fastener work
For the cited models, 90 psi is the specified operating pressure at the wrench. The requirement applies at the inlet while the tool is running. Pressure at the compressor outlet can be higher and still result in too little pressure at the tool after losses in the air path.
An impact wrench is a driving tool, not a torque-control device. Its speed, lubrication, joint condition, air pressure and impact duration affect the torque delivered to a fastener. When a job specifies a final torque, verify it with an appropriate calibrated torque device or the procedure prescribed for that application. Do not treat the wrench’s maximum or advertised breakaway torque as a substitute for final-torque verification.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact 1-inch wrench model?
- Does its specification state 90 psi or another operating pressure?
- Is the airflow figure labeled average, at load or another condition?
- Can the compressor deliver the required CFM at that pressure, rather than merely reach a high tank pressure?
- Will other pneumatic tools share the compressor during use?
- Does the hose meet the model’s minimum diameter?
- Are couplers, fittings, regulator and filters sized for the same airflow?
- Have you measured pressure at the wrench inlet while it is operating?
- Will the application require final torque verification with a calibrated device?
What cannot be specified universally
The cited manufacturer data supports a 90-psi operating point for the listed examples and airflow figures from 9 to 12 CFM average, with higher model-specific at-load values. It does not support one universal compressor horsepower, tank capacity, reserve percentage or acceptable pressure-drop number for every 1-inch wrench. Published figures may also use different definitions and conditions, and the comparison is not an independent test of compressor-and-wrench combinations.
Recommended Free Tools
Before purchasing or configuring an air system, confirm the current manual for the exact wrench and check the compressor’s delivered-air specification at the required pressure. That is the only reliable way to match the equipment to the work.
