Short answer: Eligible cards in a new main Standard set become legal when that set releases. The release does not automatically legalize every card in every product. Supplemental Commander cards, Special Guests, reprints, bans, the format you are playing, and the date can all change the result. Standard now uses a three-year set window; there is no scheduled rotation in 2026, and the next annual rotation is planned for the release of the first calendar-year set in 2027.

What changes when a new MTG set releases?

A new Magic: The Gathering set affects Standard in two separate ways: it adds eligible cards to the format, and it may coincide with a scheduled rotation. Those events are related but not identical. A card can enter Standard because its main set releases while older cards remain legal until the announced rotation date.

Main-set cards become legal at release

Cards printed in the eligible main set are generally legal in Standard from the set’s release point. For tabletop play, use the set’s official release date and the format rules in effect for that date. On MTG Arena, legality changes when the set is released into the Arena card pool and the client applies the corresponding format update. Preview season, a spoiler, a preorder listing, or owning a physical card before release does not make it legal early.

Release is not a blanket approval for every card

Modern Magic releases often bundle several products and card treatments. The product name alone is not enough to determine legality. Check the card’s set code, the product in which it was printed, and the format’s official legality list.

Card source What the release usually means for Standard Check before playing
Eligible main Standard set New cards enter Standard at release. Confirm the set is in the current Standard window and that the card has not been banned.
Supplemental Commander product New Commander-only cards do not automatically enter Standard. Read the product’s release notes and set-code information.
Special Guests Legal only in formats where that card’s name is already legal. Look up the individual card, not just the booster product.
Reprint of an older card A reprint in a current Standard set can make that card legal again. Verify the current printing and the format list.

For example, the Reality Fracture release notes identify cards with the FRA set code as permitted in Standard, Pioneer, and Modern. New Commander cards with the FRC code are permitted in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage instead. Special Guests follow the legality of their existing names. These distinctions are why a booster containing a card from a new release is not, by itself, proof that the card can be used in Standard.

How the three-year Standard window works

Wizards changed Standard from a roughly two-year lifecycle to a three-year lifecycle. In practice, Standard contains the most recent three years of eligible sets, subject to the formal rotation schedule and any exceptional announcements. A longer window gives decks more time to be played and gives newer cards more overlap with established strategies.

The 2023 no-rotation policy change

When Wilds of Eldraine released, Wizards made an exception for that year: there was no Standard rotation in 2023. The announcement explained the transition this way:

“This means that with the release of Wilds of Eldraine, there will be no Standard rotation for this year only. The following year in 2024, Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, and Streets of New Capenna will rotate out of Standard.”

The same policy moved Standard to a three-year rotation cadence rather than removing sets after two years. The practical lesson is that a set’s age alone is not enough; the announced rotation schedule controls the date.

What rotated in 2024

At the 2024 rotation, the four sets named in the policy announcement left Standard: Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, and Streets of New Capenna. Their departure was the first scheduled rotation under the new three-year approach, following the one-year pause in 2023.

The 2025 Edge of Eternities example

When Edge of Eternities released on MTG Arena, Wizards listed five groups leaving Standard at that release: Dominaria United, The Brothers’ War, Phyrexia: All Will Be One, March of the Machine, and March of the Machine: The Aftermath. The post-rotation pool listed the following sets:

Status at Edge of Eternities release on Arena Sets
Rotated out Dominaria United; The Brothers’ War; Phyrexia: All Will Be One; March of the Machine; March of the Machine: The Aftermath
In the post-rotation Standard pool Wilds of Eldraine; The Lost Caverns of Ixalan; Murders at Karlov Manor; Outlaws of Thunder Junction; Bloomburrow; Duskmourn: House of Horror; Magic: The Gathering Foundations; Aetherdrift; Tarkir: Dragonstorm; Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY; Edge of Eternities

This example shows why a new release can have a double effect. Edge of Eternities added its eligible cards, while the same update removed older sets. If you were checking a deck on that date, you had to perform both checks rather than asking only whether the new set had arrived.

The 2026 pause and the 2027 calendar-year transition

Wizards announced that there would be no Standard rotation in 2026 while the schedule changes again. Standard continues to contain three years of sets during the transition. The next rotation is planned for early 2027, with annual rotation moving to the first calendar-year set released in 2027. Wizards’ 2026 Arena format update likewise identifies early 2027 as the next Standard rotation.

For a player in October 2026, that means a set that would otherwise appear close to its rotation date remains in Standard through the 2026 pause. Do not infer a rotation from a set’s age or from a previous year’s release pattern; use the current announcement and the date of the event you plan to attend.

How to check whether a specific card is legal

Use this process whenever a new set releases, a decklist is updated, or a tournament date changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact printing. Record the set symbol or three-letter set code shown on the card or in the digital client. Different products released under a similar marketing name can have different codes and different format permissions.
  2. Classify the source. Decide whether the card is from the main set, a Commander or other supplemental product, a Special Guest sheet, or a reprint. Do not assume that appearing in a booster product means appearing in Standard.
  3. Check the format. Select Standard rather than assuming legality carries across Arena, tabletop, Alchemy, Pioneer, Explorer, Historic, Timeless, or Commander. Each format maintains its own card pool and banned list.
  4. Apply the date. Use the legality on the day of play. A card can be legal before a rotation, illegal immediately after it, or newly legal after a reprint. Arena and tabletop can also receive releases and updates on different schedules.
  5. Check bans and restrictions. A card in an otherwise legal set can be removed by a banned-and-restricted announcement. Review the latest announcement before submitting a tournament deck.
  6. Confirm the result in the official format list or release notes. The individual card entry is the final check when product contents or reprint treatment make the answer unclear.

Rotation, reprints, and bans are separate legality mechanisms

Rotation removes sets, not just individual cards

Scheduled rotation normally removes an entire group of older Standard sets. The card may remain usable in a nonrotating format if that format allows it. Rotation does not erase the card from your collection, and it does not necessarily affect formats with different card pools.

A reprint can restore legality

If a card that rotated out is printed again in a current Standard-legal set, that later printing can make the card legal in Standard again. The reprint does not undo the old set’s rotation; it creates a new legal entry under the current set’s rules. Always verify the current printing and the exact wording of the format list.

Bans can override the normal schedule

Wizards has described its normal Standard approach as leaving the format unchanged between rotations unless a serious problem appears, with a more detailed review once a year shortly before rotation. That is a policy preference, not a guarantee that bans cannot happen. In June 2025, Wizards said that because the next rotation would not occur until early 2027, it would hold two early-rotation Standard banning windows before then. A card can therefore become illegal before its set rotates.

Standard is only one format

A rotation announcement applies to the named format. It does not automatically make every rotated card illegal everywhere else.

Format or environment How a Standard rotation affects it
Tabletop Standard Uses the current Standard set window and announced rotation date.
MTG Arena Standard Uses Arena’s release and format update timing; the 2026 update places the next rotation in early 2027.
Alchemy Has its own rotation schedule. A card rotating out of Alchemy can still be legal in Standard if it remains inside Standard’s window.
Explorer and Pioneer Nonrotating formats when the card is included in their legal card pools; Standard rotation does not remove cards from them.
Historic and Timeless Use their own card pools and restrictions. A card leaving Standard can remain available if the format allows it.
Commander Uses Commander’s separate legality rules. A Commander product card may be legal here without being Standard-legal.

The word “legal” therefore needs a qualifier. Ask whether you mean tabletop Standard, Arena Standard, Alchemy, Pioneer, Historic, Timeless, or Commander, and state the date.

How a new release should change your deck-building decisions

Measure the legality window

When comparing a newly released card with an older card, estimate how much of the three-year Standard window remains. A card released near a rotation may have a shorter Standard lifespan than a card from an earlier set, even if both are powerful today. The 2026 pause gives the current pool additional time, but the early-2027 rotation still matters for long-term planning.

Separate a deck’s core from rotating pieces

Mark each card by set and rotation status before buying a playset. Lands, removal, creatures, and sideboard tools from older sets can be the first parts of a deck to disappear. Cards from newer sets may survive the next rotation, but they can still be affected by bans or by a later change in format rules.

Choose the right acquisition method

Sealed booster products are designed for opening cards from the new release and are the most direct physical match for someone who wants to experience that set. They are not an efficient way to obtain four specific cards. For a targeted Standard deck, singles or a Standard deck-building product can reduce unwanted cards, but price, stock, region, and legality are date-sensitive. Confirm that the product is tied to a Standard-legal set on the date you intend to play.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Mistake: treating a spoiler as legal. Fix: wait for the official release point and the relevant Arena update.
  • Mistake: assuming every card in a Commander-branded product is Standard-legal. Fix: inspect the set code and release notes; supplemental cards need separate confirmation.
  • Mistake: checking only the set’s age. Fix: use the announced rotation date, especially during the 2026 pause and 2027 schedule transition.
  • Mistake: carrying tabletop legality over to Arena. Fix: check the client’s format list and release timing.
  • Mistake: confusing Alchemy rotation with Standard rotation. Fix: check both formats independently.
  • Mistake: assuming rotation means the card is banned everywhere. Fix: look at Pioneer, Explorer, Historic, Timeless, or Commander legality separately.
  • Mistake: ignoring a last-minute ban. Fix: review the latest banned-and-restricted announcement before an event.

A practical release-day checklist

  1. Write down the set’s official release date and whether you are playing tabletop or Arena.
  2. Download or read the set release notes.
  3. Mark which cards have the main-set code and which belong to supplemental or Special Guest treatments.
  4. Update your decklist against the Standard legality list.
  5. Remove cards named in the rotation announcement.
  6. Check for any intervening bans.
  7. Save a dated copy of the legality result for a tournament or event registration.

Following those steps prevents the most common release-day error: adding an exciting new card correctly while forgetting that an older card in the same deck rotated out.
