MTG Arena wildcards are single-use crafting resources. Each one redeems for an Arena card of the same rarity: common, uncommon, rare, or mythic rare. Spend a wildcard when a specific card completes a deck or play goal you intend to use, after checking the card’s current in-client cost, the number of copies you still need, and legality in your chosen format. There is no official rule that saving every wildcard or spending immediately is always optimal.
This guide explains how to earn and redeem wildcards, how reprints and duplicate protection affect their value, and a practical way to decide whether to craft now or wait.
What is a wildcard in MTG Arena?
Wizards of the Coast defines a wildcard as “a card that can be redeemed for another card of the same rarity” on its official Arena getting-started page. In practical terms, the wildcard is a crafting token, not a playable card you put into a deck. A rare wildcard can become a card whose Arena crafting rarity is rare; it cannot be exchanged freely for a mythic rare, nor can several lower-rarity wildcards be converted into one of a higher rarity.

| Wildcard type | Redeems for | What to verify before spending |
|---|---|---|
| Common | A card shown as common in Arena’s crafting interface | Whether the card is needed and whether a lower-rarity reprint makes it cheaper |
| Uncommon | A card shown as uncommon in Arena’s crafting interface | Whether you already own enough copies across printings |
| Rare | A card shown as rare in Arena’s crafting interface | Format legality, remaining deck copies, and possible pack or reward alternatives |
| Mythic rare | A card shown as mythic rare in Arena’s crafting interface | The same checks, with particular care because mythic wildcards are less common |
The icon beside the crafting action shows your current wildcard counts. Because reprints can change the applicable rarity, the cost displayed on the crafting screen is more reliable than the rarity of a particular artwork or special treatment.

How do you get wildcards?
Booster packs and collection rewards
Wildcards appear in booster packs. Wizards also describes wildcard progress through play and collection rewards in its getting-started guide. Exact odds and reward-track contents can change, so use the live Reward Distribution & Drop Rates page and the current Arena client for the applicable details rather than relying on an old percentage.
The Vault and duplicate commons or uncommons
The Vault is a hidden progress system for excess common and uncommon copies. Wizards states that a fifth or later copy of a common contributes 1 Vault Progress Point, while a fifth or later copy of an uncommon contributes 3 points. The Vault remains hidden while it fills.
At 1,000 Vault Progress Points, it opens and grants 1 mythic rare wildcard, 2 rare wildcards, and 3 uncommon wildcards, according to the official reward page (accessed 2026): Reward Distribution & Drop Rates. Fifth copies do not directly turn into common or mythic cards; they feed the progress total, and the listed Vault opening rewards are the wildcards you receive.
These are game-system figures, not a promise of how quickly a particular player will fill the Vault. Your pace depends on the packs, events, and rewards you actually earn.

How do you use wildcards?
Arena supports several crafting routes. The result is the same: the selected card is added to your collection and the corresponding wildcard is consumed.
- Open your collection. Select a card you already own to view its card details and crafting controls.
- Find an unowned card. Turn on the Not Collected filter, then search by name, set, color, type, or other available filters.
- Craft while editing a deck. Add the missing card to a deck. When Arena prompts you to craft it, review the shown rarity and accept only if the card and copy count are correct.
- Craft an imported deck. Import the list, review the missing-card summary, and use Craft All if you want every missing card that Arena identifies. The client’s collection-aware logic is intended to avoid creating more copies than are useful.
- Confirm the transaction. Check the wildcard icon, card name, edition or style, and quantity in the confirmation prompt before approving. A completed craft cannot be undone through an ordinary collection command.
Crafting a card does not require a matching physical Magic card, paper booster, peripheral, or printed guide. Those products are separate from Arena’s digital collection and do not redeem or add Arena wildcards.
Why the rarity shown on a reprint can be misleading
Arena treats cards with the same name across printings in a collection-aware way. Wizards’ reprint explanation says that the card uses the lowest wildcard rarity at which that name has appeared on Arena. A card can therefore have a special or alternate printing displayed at a higher rarity while the underlying card name remains craftable with a common or uncommon wildcard if a lower-rarity Arena printing exists.
The implementation is described in MTG Arena Reprint and Card Style Improvements and Dev Diary: Improving Reprints on MTG Arena. The practical rule is simple: open the card’s current craft prompt and use the rarity and quantity it shows. Do not infer the cost from the frame, artwork, set symbol, or a listing on a third-party site.

Copy counts across printings
Arena tracks useful copies of a card name rather than treating every printing as an entirely separate playset for crafting purposes. When you edit a deck or use Craft All, the client considers the copies already in your collection across the relevant printings. Review the proposed quantity anyway, especially if you own cards in several sets or have alternate-art versions, because the deck may need fewer additional copies than a raw set-by-set count suggests.
When should you spend a wildcard?
No Wizards publication establishes a universally optimal spending schedule, and there is no published player study proving that saving, immediate crafting, or a particular deck tier produces the best result. Use a decision sequence based on the card’s actual job in your collection.
1. Name the deck or play goal
Start with a concrete purpose: a deck you will play in a queue, an event list you are preparing, or a specific card needed to test a strategy. Crafting because a wildcard is available often leaves you with a card that does not solve an immediate problem. Crafting a missing card for a deck you genuinely intend to play gives the resource a measurable benefit now.
2. Inspect the current rarity and cost
Open the card in Arena and read the crafting prompt. Reprints, special treatments, and rarity changes can make an assumed cost wrong. The client is the authoritative check for the current transaction.

3. Count the copies still required
Look at the deck’s missing-card panel and your collection, not just the deck list’s nominal maximum. If you need one copy to play the deck, crafting four immediately may consume wildcards without improving your next match. Conversely, if the deck requires a full playset and the client confirms that none of the needed copies are already owned, calculate the entire requirement before confirming any craft.
4. Confirm the intended format
Rotation changes the eligible card pools for rotating formats such as Standard and Alchemy. Cards that rotate out can remain legal in nonrotating Arena formats including Historic, Pioneer, and Timeless, subject to each format’s rules. Wizards’ 2025 rotation overview explains the principle but cannot establish a named card’s legality in October 2026. Select the format in the current client and verify the card before spending.
5. Compare crafting with a realistic pack path
Ask whether opening a particular pack or earning a particular reward advances the collection you actually want. Store packs, Golden Packs, and Limited packs do not have identical contents or duplicate rules. If the card is needed for tonight’s deck and the pack path is uncertain, crafting may be the only immediate route. If the card is not urgent and the pack or reward is directly relevant, waiting can be reasonable—but it is a choice, not a guaranteed wildcard-saving formula.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Question | Craft now is more defensible when… | Waiting is more defensible when… |
|---|---|---|
| Deck need | The card completes a deck or test you will play soon. | You have no defined deck or play goal. |
| Rarity | The client shows a lower rarity than you expected or the cost fits your plan. | The card is a high-rarity luxury inclusion and not required. |
| Copies | You need a specific number and have checked existing copies across printings. | You are unsure whether the deck needs one copy or a full set. |
| Format | The current format selector confirms legality and you expect to use the card there. | Legality is uncertain or rotation is near for your chosen format. |
| Alternative path | No relevant pack, event, or reward is likely to provide the card soon. | A relevant reward path advances the same collection goal and the card is not urgent. |
Pack types, duplicate protection, and why waiting is not a guarantee
Arena’s pack systems have different rules. Wizards’ Wilds of Eldraine release notes described duplicate protection for rare and mythic reprints under the policy in effect there, including protection regardless of artwork. The same notice explicitly excluded 14-card packs opened in Limited events such as Draft and Sealed. Because later reprint updates changed behavior in some areas, treat that 2023 explanation as historical context and rely on the current client and live official rules for present contents.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Golden Packs also have their own replacement sequence. In Wizards’ September 5, 2023 Golden Pack and Individual Card Rewards update, a duplicate rare or mythic was replaced, in order, by an eligible card of the same rarity in the same set, then an eligible Standard-legal set, then an eligible standalone Alchemy set, and finally gems. That announcement listed 20 gems for a rare or 40 gems for a mythic after eligible cards were exhausted. Those values and the six-rare-or-mythic launch description belong to that dated announcement; they are not an unqualified guarantee of current Golden Pack contents.
Do not assume that an extra pack, a duplicate, or a reward track will automatically become the wildcard you need. Check the pack type, the current duplicate-protection text, and the reward shown in Arena before treating opening packs as an alternative to crafting.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Spending by color or excitement: Choose a card because a defined deck needs it, not because a wildcard is burning a hole in your collection.
- Using the wrong rarity: A rare wildcard cannot craft a mythic rare. Read the client’s prompt instead of trying to substitute a different tier.
- Ignoring reprints: The art or set symbol may not reflect the lowest Arena rarity. Open the card details and inspect the actual craft cost.
- Crafting too many copies: Use the deck’s missing-card count and collection-aware prompt; do not automatically craft four.
- Assuming rotation dates prove legality: Historical rotation articles explain the system, not a card’s legality on a future date. Verify with the current format selector.
- Confusing Vault progress with direct cards: Fifth-or-later commons and uncommons add points; the Vault awards the listed uncommon, rare, and mythic wildcards only when it opens.
- Treating every pack alike: Store, Golden, Draft, and Sealed packs can follow different duplicate and reward rules.
- Expecting a refund: Confirm the card, rarity, and quantity before accepting the craft action.
A reliable rule for your next craft
Before you press the craft button, answer five questions: What deck or play goal does this card serve? What rarity and quantity does Arena show? How many copies do I already own across printings? Is the card legal in the format I will actually play? Is there a specific, relevant reward path worth waiting for? If the answers point to an immediate need and the client confirms the cost, spending the wildcard is a rational use of the resource. If the need, legality, or copy count is unclear, pause and verify those details rather than following a universal save-or-spend slogan.
