AI can improve an MSP’s capacity and create new client demand, but adoption alone does not prove higher profit. The business case is sound only when an MSP can show that a specific use case lowers cost to serve, increases useful capacity, improves service quality, or supports a clearly priced outcome—after accounting for integration, human review, security, privacy, and ongoing monitoring.

That distinction matters in 2026. Kaseya’s survey of more than 1,000 MSPs worldwide found strong interest in AI, while relatively few respondents said they were generating meaningful AI-service revenue. The opportunity is real, but so is the execution gap. The safest strategy is to treat AI as both an operating system to govern and a service capability to package, measure, and support.

What the latest MSP data actually says

Several 2025–2026 surveys point in the same direction: customers are asking about AI, MSPs are experimenting internally, and commercial results vary widely. These are vendor or market surveys, not causal proof that AI raises an individual provider’s margins.

Where AI can improve an MSP’s economics

Start with a measurable constraint rather than a model or brand. AI is economically useful when it changes a metric that drives gross margin, capacity, retention, or sales efficiency.

Reduce repetitive work without removing accountability

Ticket classification, suggested responses, incident summarization, patch-priority recommendations, and monitoring-noise reduction can give technicians more time for complex work. Keep a human approval step for actions that can interrupt service, change security controls, delete data, or communicate a contractual commitment to a customer.

Increase coverage with the existing team

After-hours triage and first-response drafting can shorten queues, but speed is not the same as resolution. Track first-response time, time to resolution, reopen rate, escalation rate, and customer satisfaction together. A workflow that closes tickets quickly but creates rework is a cost shift, not a gain.

Turn expertise into defined services

Clients may need acceptable-use policies, data-flow reviews, secure configuration, model-access controls, incident playbooks, or monitoring. Sell a bounded deliverable—such as an AI-use assessment, deployment guardrails, or recurring oversight—instead of promising “AI transformation” or guaranteed savings.

Protect retention and expansion

Use account reviews to identify where a customer’s AI deployment changes identity, endpoint, data-protection, backup, or compliance requirements. The commercial result should be a documented need and service scope, not an automatic upsell.

A decision test for every internal workflow or client offer

Use the following gates before production deployment or adding an item to a service catalog.

  1. Define the baseline. Record current labor minutes, queue volume, error and escalation rates, service-level performance, customer-impact incidents, and recurring vendor costs.
  2. State the expected change. Specify which cost-to-serve, capacity, response, quality, retention, or revenue metric should move and by how much to justify the work.
  3. Count the full cost. Include discovery, integration, data preparation, licensing, testing, staff training, human review, security controls, monitoring, and exit or replacement work.
  4. Set the scope. Label the use case internal or client-facing. Client-facing advice and automation require a named owner, service boundaries, approval rules, and a customer communication plan.
  5. Run a controlled pilot. Use a limited queue, customer cohort, or non-destructive task. Define stop conditions before enabling automation.
  6. Measure quality as well as speed. Compare outcomes with the baseline, including incorrect answers, missed issues, escalations, rework, and customer feedback.
  7. Approve, revise, or retire. A use case that cannot meet its economic and quality thresholds should not remain in production merely because it is fashionable.

How to use AI safely in service delivery

Ticketing and knowledge work

Begin with retrieval from an approved knowledge base and clearly mark generated text for technician review. Restrict access to the minimum ticket, customer, and identity data required. Keep the original request, generated suggestion, human edit, final action, and timestamp in the service record so an incident can be reconstructed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Patching, monitoring, and remediation

AI can prioritize alerts or suggest a remediation path, but automated changes should be limited by policy. Require approvals for production-impacting actions, test rollback procedures, and maintain an exception process for sensitive systems. Compare false positives, false negatives, remediation duration, and rollback frequency with the pre-AI baseline.

Client-facing advice and automation

Document whether the MSP is providing advisory information, configuring a customer-controlled tool, or operating a managed system. The contract should identify customer responsibilities, data ownership, permitted use, approval points, service levels, incident notification, and what happens if the underlying AI provider changes behavior or access terms.

Security and privacy controls an MSP should require

Before data enters an AI system, map what is collected, where it is processed, how long it is retained, and which people or subprocessors can access it. Separate customer tenants, use strong identity and access controls, and disable training or secondary use where the product and contract permit. Treat prompts, retrieved documents, logs, and generated outputs as potentially sensitive data.

Why post-deployment monitoring is non-negotiable

Testing a model before launch cannot reveal every behavior in a changing production environment. NIST’s March 9, 2026 announcement states: “Given that AI systems have novel properties that introduce variability and manifest in unpredictable ways, post-deployment monitoring – from incident monitoring to field studies – is a crucial practice for confident, wide-spread AI adoption.” See NIST’s report announcement for the source and its AI 800-4 framing.

Build a monitoring plan across six practical categories:

  • Functionality: accuracy, completeness, drift, hallucination or unsafe-output rates, and performance against representative cases.
  • Operations: availability, latency, cost per transaction, queue impact, integration failures, and rollback success.
  • Human factors: override frequency, reviewer workload, training gaps, automation bias, accessibility, and customer complaints.
  • Security: prompt injection, data exfiltration, account misuse, unusual access, and compromised integrations.
  • Compliance: required records, retention, explainability, contractual controls, and applicable sector or regional rules.
  • Large-scale impact: systemic failures, concentration risk, repeated harm across customers, and effects that are not visible in a single ticket.

Assign an owner for each signal, set alert thresholds, review trends on a schedule, and rehearse how to suspend the workflow. Monitoring without an action path is only reporting.

Secure deployment

Configuration work may include tenant separation, permissions, logging, retention, endpoint controls, backup integration, and staff training. Price the implementation effort separately from recurring oversight so one-time engineering does not silently erode managed-service margin.

Managed oversight

A recurring service can cover monitoring, policy updates, incident triage, model or vendor change reviews, and quarterly customer reporting. Define what is monitored, the response window, exclusions, and the customer’s approval duties.

Recovery and continuity

AI dependencies do not replace backup and disaster-recovery fundamentals. Kaseya reported that 50% of its surveyed MSP respondents saw business-continuity and disaster-recovery revenue growth, while 71% reported cybersecurity revenue growth. Those findings support continued investment in established protections even as AI becomes a new priority; they do not establish a universal growth rate. Source: Kaseya, 2026.

Keep cybersecurity central while priorities shift

The MSP GLOBAL Summer 2026 industry page reports that cybersecurity’s priority ranking fell by 5.6 percentage points and moved out of the top three, while AI deployment continued to increase. Its charts are dynamically rendered, so no additional deployment percentage should be inferred from that summary. The change indicates shifting attention, not that security is optional. AI services can increase the attack surface through new identities, integrations, data stores, and third-party dependencies. Keep core controls funded: tested backups, recovery objectives, endpoint and identity protection, vulnerability management, logging, incident response, and customer exercises. As N-able CEO John Pagliuca put it in the company’s March 4, 2025 release, “When it comes to cybersecurity, ‘good enough’ is no longer good enough.” That is a vendor executive’s statement, not an independent standard; use your own risk assessment to set controls.

People, skills, and credibility

OpenText’s survey found that about half of respondents felt prepared to guide SMB customers deploying AI, despite 92% reporting growth driven by AI interest. Close that readiness gap deliberately: train technicians on data handling and verification, train account teams to qualify business outcomes, and give sales staff a clear boundary between supported services and unsupported experimentation.

Accreditations can help with procurement conversations, but website mentions are not proof of certification. A 2025 UK Department for Business and Trade market study found that 73% of the 3,282 UK MSP websites mentioning at least one accreditation mentioned ISO/IEC 27001. This is a website-mention measure, not an audit of certification status. The study is available at the department’s market-study PDF.

A practical governance cadence

Governance should be light enough to operate and strong enough to catch drift.

  • Before approval: document purpose, owner, data classification, vendors, baseline metrics, human controls, and stop conditions.
  • During a pilot: review samples, errors, escalations, costs, and user feedback weekly or more often for high-impact workflows.
  • In production: monitor the six NIST-aligned categories, reconcile vendor changes, and review access and logs on a defined schedule.
  • At each customer review: report agreed outcomes, incidents, exceptions, capacity effects, and any scope change.
  • After an incident or major model change: pause where necessary, preserve evidence, notify the right parties, reassess controls, and require documented approval to resume.

Profit protection checklist for MSP leaders

  • Have we recorded a credible pre-AI baseline?
  • Does the use case have one accountable owner and a measurable success threshold?
  • Did the business case include setup, integration, review, monitoring, training, and exit costs?
  • Can a human stop or reverse a harmful action?
  • Do contracts define data use, responsibilities, service levels, and dependency failures?
  • Are security, backup, recovery, and incident response funded alongside AI work?
  • Can we show a customer a specific deliverable and outcome rather than a vague technology promise?
  • What evidence will make us retire the workflow if quality or economics deteriorate?

The bottom line for MSPs

AI is raising both the opportunity and the operating risk. Survey evidence shows substantial client interest, growing internal use, and a readiness gap; it does not show that deployment automatically creates profit. MSPs protect margins by proving one workflow at a time, pricing the complete service, keeping humans accountable for consequential decisions, and monitoring behavior after launch. The providers most likely to benefit will connect AI to measurable customer outcomes while continuing to treat cybersecurity, privacy, backup, recovery, and service quality as non-negotiable operating disciplines.
