Molecular windmills are experimental rotary systems, not miniature electricity-generating wind turbines. The name covers several different designs: organic rotors arranged on a gold surface, DNA structures driven by flow through nanopores, and liquid-crystal molecules that collectively precess as water evaporates. Researchers have demonstrated motion in each case, but that is not the same as demonstrating a practical power source.
What does “molecular windmill” mean?
The phrase does not identify one standard device. It is used for molecular-scale structures whose shape or motion resembles a rotor, even though their materials, energy inputs, and functions differ. One early example was an array of organic rotors attached to gold; later work explored DNA rotors and a rotating liquid-crystal monolayer.
At this scale, resemblance to a familiar machine can be misleading. Thermal motion, heat dissipation, and interactions with surrounding solvent affect how molecular systems move and operate. A structure that rotates is not automatically a motor that can deliver useful work. A review of molecular machines discusses these scale-specific considerations: Nature Reviews Materials.
How did the first molecular windmill array work?
A 2009 Chemistry World report by Lewis Brindley described thousands of propeller-shaped molecules attached to a gold surface. Each rotor was a four-bladed tetra-tert-butyl zinc phthalocyanine, abbreviated (t-Bu)₄-ZnPc. The Chinese Academy of Sciences team led by Hongjun Gao developed a way to mount the rotors in an array, prompting the comparison to a microscopic wind farm. Chemistry World’s 2009 report

The article presented the array as a step toward integrating molecular rotors into nanomachines that might provide power or propulsion. It did not establish that the surface array itself was a working generator. The report excerpt also does not give a measured rotation speed or enough detail to describe the attachment chemistry, so neither should be inferred.
How do later molecular windmills turn?
A DNA bundle driven at a nanopore
In a 2022 study, researchers reported sustained, unidirectional rotation of a DNA-based rotor at up to 20 revolutions per second. The elastic DNA bundle formed a chiral shape when docked at a solid-state nanopore. Water and ions flowing through the pore—driven by a salt gradient or an applied voltage—powered the rotation. This result belongs to that particular rotor and experimental setup, not to molecular windmills as a whole. Shi et al., Nature Physics (2022)

A designed three-bladed DNA turbine
A separate 2023 study described DNA origami turbines with three blades, measuring 24–27 nm in both height and diameter. The turbines rotated at up to 10 revolutions per second, powered by a transmembrane electrochemical potential across nanopores. Their speed is not a direct performance comparison with the 2022 DNA bundle: the designs and experimental arrangements differ. Nature Nanotechnology (2023)

A 2013 “nano-windmill” study examined a chiral liquid-crystalline monolayer at the water–air interface. Instead of measuring one engineered rotor turning independently, the researchers observed collective precession driven by the flux of evaporating water. The reported angular velocity fell from about 1 s⁻¹ at 312 K to 10⁻² s⁻¹ at 285.8 K, reaching zero near the monolayer’s two-dimensional liquid-to-solid transition. For this system, the authors estimated work per turn at 310 K as 3.5 × 10⁻²⁸ J for one molecule in the collectively rotating monolayer. That is a molecular-scale estimate, not evidence of household-scale power output.
How do the main examples compare?
| System | Structure and energy input | Reported motion | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold-surface array (2009) | Four-bladed (t-Bu)₄-ZnPc rotors attached to gold; the cited report describes surface arrangement, not a measured operating energy input. | Rotor speed not stated in the cited report. | An array was made; integration into nanomachines was proposed as a possible direction. |
| DNA nanopore rotor (2022) | Self-organized chiral DNA bundle; water and ion flow through a solid-state nanopore, driven by a salt gradient or voltage. | Sustained unidirectional rotation up to 20 revolutions per second. | Rotation of a DNA construct under the study’s nanopore conditions. |
| DNA origami turbine (2023) | Designed three-bladed DNA turbine, 24–27 nm high and in diameter; transmembrane electrochemical potential across nanopores. | Up to 10 revolutions per second. | Rotation of a designed turbine under the study’s conditions; not directly comparable to the 2022 rotor. |
| Liquid-crystal monolayer (2013) | Chiral monolayer at a water–air interface; evaporating-water flux drives collective motion. | About 1 s⁻¹ at 312 K to 10⁻² s⁻¹ at 285.8 K; zero near the two-dimensional liquid-to-solid transition. | Collective molecular precession, with a separately estimated per-molecule work per turn at 310 K. |
Can molecular rotors generate useful power?
The cited studies establish several forms of molecular-scale rotation, but they do not show that these systems can generate useful power for ordinary devices. The 2009 array was described as a possible foundation for nanomachinery, while the later DNA studies measured rotation under nanopore-driven conditions and the liquid-crystal work quantified collective motion and estimated work per turn. These are distinct demonstrations, not evidence of a practical generator or propulsion system.

To assess any proposed application, distinguish the observed motion from the function being proposed. A rotor’s speed alone does not establish how much work it can deliver, whether that output can be harnessed, or whether the system can perform a task at a useful scale.
