Modular power systems can help a data center get its electrical infrastructure built, integrated, and tested sooner by shifting work from the site to a factory. They do not, by themselves, move a project up a utility’s interconnection queue or eliminate grid studies, upgrades, permits, and approvals. The practical advantage is parallel progress: teams can prepare facility-side power while the utility process continues.
How modular power systems affect a data center’s schedule
A conventional power build may involve equipment from several suppliers arriving at different times and being connected, configured, and tested on site. That creates coordination tasks and interfaces among switchgear, transformers, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), controls, cabling, and the building’s electrical systems.
A prefabricated skid or eHouse brings some of that equipment and integration work together in a factory-built package. Depending on the project, a module may include medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) distribution, a transformer, UPS equipment, and controls. Factory assembly and testing can reduce the amount of integration left for the site team, while a more repeatable installation may streamline commissioning.
Siemens describes this approach in its modular power product material, including a Compass Datacenters example of an MV skid integrating switchgear and a transformer as a factory-tested unit. The benefit is on the facility-construction side: less site assembly and fewer interfaces to coordinate. The module still has to be designed for the project and connected to the site’s electrical infrastructure.

Why this does not shorten the utility queue
Utility interconnection and facility construction are related but distinct workstreams. A modular system can help the data center advance its electrical build while the utility evaluates the requested connection. It cannot replace the utility’s studies, required grid upgrades, permits, approvals, or the work needed to energize the service.
That distinction matters when interpreting schedule claims. PJM reported in June 2026 that study processing under its reformed interconnection process was taking one to two years. PJM also noted that permitting and supply-chain delays can remain after studies are complete. This is a regional, process-specific example—not a timeline for every utility, project, or stage of interconnection.

So “faster to deploy” should not be read as “faster utility approval.” A project may complete more of its own electrical infrastructure before grid power is available, but its energization date still depends on the utility-side path and site readiness.

These are vendor-stated potential benefits for the proposed solution, not independently measured averages for the data center sector or proof that a project’s utility interconnection will finish sooner. A buyer should ask what scope, baseline, schedule, and emissions boundary each estimate uses before applying it to a project forecast.
What a project can do while waiting for grid power
If the facility needs power before utility energization, modular distribution equipment is only one part of the answer. Other approaches target interim power availability or flexibility, each with separate site, operating, and utility requirements.

| Option | What it can change | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Prefabricated distribution skid or eHouse | Site construction, integration, and commissioning effort | Which MV, LV, UPS, and control equipment is included? What testing is completed at the factory? Which site interfaces and approvals remain? |
| Temporary rental power | Power availability for commissioning or an interim period | What load and duration are covered? What are the fuel, emissions, noise, redundancy, permitting, and cutover requirements? |
| Modular on-site generation | Power availability that is not dependent on full utility energization, subject to site readiness | What fuel, emissions controls, permits, redundancy, ramping, and grid synchronization are needed? |
| Battery storage or grid flexibility | Load shaping or a utility-coordinated flexibility resource | What duration and operating constraints apply? What utility arrangement and controls are required? |
These are not interchangeable substitutes for a permanent utility connection. For example, Aggreko describes a temporary-power deployment for hyperscale data center commissioning in South Bend, Indiana: the company reports 60 MW deployed and 99.1% uptime over six months. Those are company-reported figures for that project, not independently audited industry benchmarks.
Other examples illustrate different strategies rather than guaranteed schedules. Eaton and Siemens Energy describe an integrated approach combining modular electrical systems with on-site generation and battery storage. Calibrant Energy describes a battery storage project for Aligned Data Centers designed as a grid-flexibility resource to support reliability and earlier energization. Such arrangements need to be coordinated with the utility and assessed for their actual operating role; a battery’s duration and controls, for instance, determine what load it can support and for how long.

FuelCell Energy announced standardized packaged 12.5 MW on-site power blocks in March 2026, citing congestion, interconnection backlogs, and permitting delays as drivers of demand. This establishes the announced capacity of that offering, not that every project can install and operate one on the same schedule. On-site generation entails its own fuel, emissions, permitting, and synchronization considerations.

Compare the proposed module with the actual site design and schedule baseline—not with a generic promise of faster deployment. Ask the supplier and engineering team to document the boundary between factory scope, site scope, and utility scope.
- Equipment scope: Identify exactly which MV/LV distribution, transformers, UPS equipment, controls, and protection functions are included.
- Factory testing: Specify the tests completed before shipment, the records delivered, and which integrated tests must still occur after installation.
- Remaining interfaces: Map connections to the utility service, buildings, generators, storage, controls, and other contractors. A packaged module can reduce interfaces without removing them.
- Schedule basis: Ask which design, procurement, construction, or commissioning tasks are shortened, what assumptions support the estimate, and whether work can proceed in parallel with utility activities.
- Site readiness: Confirm space, foundations, access, installation logistics, cable routes, and local approvals. Off-site fabrication does not make a site ready automatically.
- Interim-power plan: If load is needed before grid energization, compare temporary generation, permanent on-site generation, and storage against the required load, duration, operating constraints, emissions, permitting, and cutover plan.
- Lifecycle and reuse: Account for maintenance, expansion, replacement, relocation, and total cost over the intended operating life—not just initial installation.
Schneider Electric’s Sagrada Familia case study describes an off-site-built modular data center that could be moved as construction demands dictated and was implemented without disrupting business operations. It is an example of modular deployment and relocatability, not a measured result for reducing utility interconnection time.
When modularization is most useful
Modular power is most useful when factory integration can remove meaningful site work or simplify coordination, and when the project can advance that work while utility milestones proceed independently. Its value is less clear if the package does not match the final design, site interfaces remain unresolved, or the critical delay is entirely within utility studies and grid construction.
Keep two schedule plans visible: the facility-side path for equipment, installation, and commissioning, and the utility-side path for studies, approvals, upgrades, and energization. A modular system may improve the first and allow the team to make progress during the second; it does not collapse those paths into one.
