Modern Warfare II (MW2) uses your Activision account as the identity and progression hub. Crossplay lets players on supported platforms match together, while cross-progression makes the same rank, weapon progress, camos, statistics, Battle Pass progress, and unlocked customization content available on linked platforms. You still need to own the game on each platform where you want to play: linking accounts does not transfer the license or provide cross-buy.
The crucial condition is that every PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, Nintendo, or other supported platform account you use must be linked to the one Activision account that contains your original progress. Linking a platform account to a different Activision account does not merge anything and can make your progress appear to vanish until you restore the original link.

Crossplay and cross-progression are different features
These terms describe separate parts of MW2’s online system:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|---|
| Crossplay | Allows players on supported platforms to play in the same multiplayer matchmaking pool and invite one another through Activision IDs. | Does not move your game license, platform wallet, or every purchase between stores. |
| Cross-progression | Saves supported progression to your Activision account so it is available when that same account is used on another linked platform, including across console generations. | Does not combine progress from two different Activision accounts. |
For example, a player can own MW2 on PlayStation and Xbox, link both platform accounts to one Activision account, and continue the same multiplayer progression on either console. If the Xbox account is linked to a second Activision account, the Xbox session starts with that account’s data instead; there is no automatic merge.

How the Activision account connects everything
Activision requires an Activision account for MW2 online play. That account has an Activision ID, the cross-platform name other players use to find and invite you. An ID is normally displayed in a form such as DisplayName#1234567.
In MW2’s Social menu, choose Invite Friends and enter the friend’s Activision ID. The game distinguishes Activision friends from friends maintained by the console platform, so a person appearing in your PlayStation or Xbox friends list is not necessarily in your Activision friends list. Using the Activision ID is the reliable way to invite across platforms.
The Activision account is also where supported progression is recorded. The platform account supplies access to the console or PC service, but it does not become the owner of the cross-platform progression independently of Activision’s account link.
Ownership is still platform-specific
Cross-progression is not cross-buy. You must own an MW2 license on every platform where you intend to launch and play the game. Linking a PlayStation account to the same Activision account used on Xbox or PC does not grant the Xbox or PC version, and it does not copy a purchase from one storefront to another.
Use this four-part check before changing platforms:
- License: Is MW2 owned on the platform you are about to use?
- Identity: Is that platform account linked to the Activision account that contains your existing progress?
- Item type: Is the thing you are checking account-linked progression/content or platform-linked currency/purchase data?
- Matchmaking: Does the platform’s crossplay setting allow the other platforms you want to play with?
Failing any one of these checks explains most reports that crossplay or progression is “not working.”
Link a platform account to Activision
Complete the link in a browser before launching MW2. Activision permits only one linked account per provider, so confirm the account details carefully.
- Sign in to the platform account you want to use and to your Activision account in the same browser. Use the Activision account that already holds your MW2 progress if you are moving from another platform.
- Open Activision’s Linked Accounts area.
- Select Link Account beside the relevant provider.
- Enter the one-time email verification code Activision sends and complete the sign-in on the platform provider’s website.
- Return to the linked-account page and verify that the intended platform account is shown. Then start MW2 on that platform and check the displayed Activision ID before entering multiplayer.
Activision’s currently listed providers include PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Blizzard, Nintendo, and Ubisoft. The provider list and account screens can change, so use the providers shown in your current Linked Accounts page rather than assuming every service is available forever.
Important linking limits
- Only one account from a given provider can be linked to an Activision account at a time.
- An individual platform account can generally be unlinked only once every 12 months.
- Accounts with active enforcement or activity Activision considers suspicious may be prevented from unlinking.
Because of the 12-month restriction, do not unlink at random to troubleshoot a missing item. First identify which Activision account contains the original data.
What follows you to another linked platform
Activision describes the following as account-linked MW2 progression or content. They become available when you sign in with the same Activision account on another linked platform:
| Category | Cross-progression treatment |
|---|---|
| Player statistics and rank | Stored on the Activision account and available on linked platforms. |
| Weapon progression | Weapon levels and related progression follow the account. |
| Camo progression | Camo progress is associated with the shared account. |
| Unlocked customization | Unlocked customization content is available on linked platforms, subject to the item’s platform rules. |
| Battle Pass progress | Progress and unlocked Battle Pass content are account-linked. |
| Mode activity | MW2 Multiplayer and Special Ops activity, along with Warzone activity referenced by Activision, contributes to overall player and Battle Pass progression. |
These are progression records, not a second copy of the game. A new platform can show your account’s rank and unlocks only after you own the game there and sign in through the correctly linked platform account.

What remains tied to a platform
Currency and purchase entitlements do not all follow the same rule as progression:
| Item | Where it can be used |
|---|---|
| COD Points bought on a platform | Can be spent only on the platform where they were purchased. |
| COD Points earned from a Battle Pass tier | Can be spent only on the platform where that tier was unlocked. |
| Content purchased with COD Points | Activision says this content can be used on linked platforms. |
| Content or COD Points bought with real money | May remain usable only on the platform where the purchase was made, according to Activision’s current support text. |
| Game license | Remains specific to the storefront and platform where MW2 was purchased. |
Consequently, seeing your operators, camos, or Battle Pass unlocks on a second platform does not mean that the COD Point balance from the first platform will also appear there. Check the purchase platform before spending currency or expecting a paid entitlement to move.
If your progress appears to have disappeared
The most common cause is a platform account linked to the wrong Activision account, not deletion of the underlying progress. Activision states that progress and content are not lost when a PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, or Steam account is linked to a different Activision account; relinking that platform account to the original Activision account restores access.
- Stop playing on the account showing the wrong rank or unlocks. New activity there can make it harder to tell which profile you are examining.
- In MW2, note the Activision ID currently displayed in your profile or Social menu.
- Sign in to Activision’s account page and inspect Linked Accounts. Determine whether the platform is attached to a newly created or otherwise different Activision account.
- Sign out and sign back in with the Activision account that originally held your MW2 progress. If you have multiple email addresses, check each one rather than creating another account.
- After confirming the original account, use the Linked Accounts controls to restore the platform account to it, subject to Activision’s unlinking rules.
- Launch MW2 again and allow the account data to load before judging the result. Verify the Activision ID, rank, weapon progress, and Battle Pass state.
Do not create a second Activision account as a first response. Two accounts cannot be merged to combine their ranks, unlocks, or Battle Pass progress. If the account is under enforcement or the unlink control is blocked, use Activision’s account-support process instead of repeatedly attempting to detach it.

PlayStation
PlayStation has crossplay enabled by default. To change it in MW2, open Options, choose Settings, open Account & Network, and select the Crossplay option. Set it according to whether you want matchmaking with players outside PlayStation.
Xbox
Xbox controls the permission through the console’s privacy settings. Follow this path:
- Press the Xbox button to open the Guide.
- Choose Settings.
- Open General, then Online safety & family.
- Select Privacy & online safety, then Xbox Live privacy.
- Choose View details & customize, followed by Communication & multiplayer.
- Allow or block play with people outside Xbox Live.
Xbox’s privacy choice can override what you expect from an in-game setting, so check both the console permission and MW2’s account/network menu when matchmaking behaves unexpectedly.
Ground War exception
Activision states that Ground War matches require crossplay. If crossplay is blocked, Ground War may remain unavailable even though other modes can still be played under the restricted matchmaking setting.

| Friends on another platform cannot find you | You are using a console-only friends list or the wrong Activision ID. | Use the exact Activision ID, including the number after the #, from the Social menu. |
| Rank and camos are missing on a new console | The new platform account is linked to a different Activision account. | Check Linked Accounts and restore the original Activision account; do not make a third account. |
| COD Points are absent on the second platform | COD Points are platform-linked currency. | Use the balance on the platform where it was purchased or where the Battle Pass tier was unlocked. |
| A paid item is unavailable elsewhere | The purchase may be a platform-specific real-money entitlement. | Check the purchase platform and Activision’s current item-specific terms. |
| Cross-platform matchmaking is unavailable | Crossplay is disabled in a console setting or privacy permission. | Re-enable the relevant setting; remember that Ground War requires crossplay. |
| The unlink button is unavailable | The 12-month limit, enforcement, or suspicious-activity safeguards may apply. | Do not keep retrying; verify the original account and contact Activision support if recovery is required. |
Service-status change affecting records
Activision’s Modern Warfare II support article, published July 15, 2026, says: “To optimize backend services ahead of the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Leaderboards and Combat Records have been permanently disabled in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.”
This is a service-state notice about leaderboards and Combat Records. It should not be interpreted as a statement that account linking transfers the game license, nor as permission to create a new account when rank or unlocks look wrong. Because service policies can change, check the current Modern Warfare II support information if you need to confirm the status later.
