Short answer: Landau theory classifies phases mainly by the local order that appears when a symmetry is spontaneously broken. Modern topological approaches ask a different set of questions: What global invariant labels the state? Which symmetries constrain it? Is the bulk gapped or gapless? Can the state be continuously deformed into another one without closing the gap or leaving the allowed symmetry class? These are complementary frameworks, not a single new rule that replaces Landau theory.
In practice, a claim that a quantum phase is “stable” is always conditional. It means stable against a specified class of perturbations while stated conditions—such as a protecting symmetry, spatial dimension, and a bulk energy gap—remain intact.
What the older Landau picture classifies
Landau’s framework begins with symmetry. A high-temperature or otherwise disordered phase has a particular symmetry; when the system enters an ordered phase, that symmetry is broken spontaneously. The phase is then described by an order parameter, a quantity whose nonzero value identifies the new order and whose transformation under the symmetry reveals what was broken.
Examples of the logic include a magnet developing a preferred direction or a crystal developing a periodic arrangement. Two phases that break different symmetries, or that have incompatible order parameters, cannot generally be connected without a phase transition. Landau’s approach also provides a language for critical behavior, allowed couplings, and the sequence of conventional transitions.

Yoshimasa Hidaka of the KEK Theory Center captures the historical importance of this framework: “The triumphant history of theory on the phase classification and the phase transition can be traced back to Landau, which is based on the spontaneous breaking of symmetry.” His 2022 review also emphasizes that some phases are not characterized by conventional symmetry-breaking arguments.
What Landau theory does well
- It identifies phases through local observables and order parameters.
- It connects a phase transition to the change of a symmetry pattern.
- It remains the natural first tool for conventional magnets, crystals, superfluids, and other phases whose distinction is visible in local order.
- It supplies an effective theory for fluctuations near many continuous transitions.
Where the local-order test is insufficient
Two states can preserve the same obvious symmetries and still be separated by a robust distinction. Their difference may be encoded in how the entire wavefunction, band structure, or Hamiltonian is organized globally rather than in a local order parameter. In such cases, looking only for spontaneous symmetry breaking can label both states as “symmetric” and miss the phase boundary between them.
This does not make Landau theory wrong. It means that its assumptions do not cover every distinction available in quantum matter. A complete diagnosis starts by asking whether the phenomenon is expected to involve conventional local order, a global topological property, protected boundary behavior, intrinsic long-range entanglement, or a combination.

What modern topological classification adds
Topological classification compares states by global properties that cannot change continuously under an allowed deformation. The precise invariant depends on the problem, but the central test is consistent: define the class of Hamiltonians or states being considered, then determine whether two members can be connected without encountering a forbidden event such as closing a bulk gap, breaking a required symmetry, or leaving the specified dimensionality.
The 2016 review by Chiu and collaborators in Reviews of Modern Physics surveys both fully gapped and gapless systems. It treats nonspatial symmetries such as time reversal, spatial symmetries such as reflection, and gapless modes localized on topological defects. The mathematical tools discussed include homotopy groups, Clifford algebras, K-theory, and nonlinear sigma models.

These tools are not interchangeable labels for every material. A homotopy calculation may describe one type of order-parameter space, while K-theory is useful for particular families of free-fermion Hamiltonians. The result always depends on the state class, the symmetries imposed, the dimension, and whether the spectrum is gapped or gapless.
Topology without a conventional order parameter
A topological invariant is global: it can depend on the structure of occupied states throughout momentum space, on how defects are encircled, or on another property that is unchanged by smooth deformations. Because local measurements need not reveal a changing order parameter, a transition between topological sectors can occur even when the obvious symmetries remain unbroken.
For a gapped classification, the bulk gap is usually the barrier that prevents one sector from being smoothly changed into another. If the gap closes, the invariant can change and a phase transition can occur. A statement that two phases are distinct therefore has to identify the gap condition rather than treating “topological” as an unconditional adjective.
SPT phases: protection supplied by symmetry
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are a clear example of why “stability” must be qualified. In the setting reviewed by T. Senthil in 2015, an SPT state has a bulk gap and no exotic excitations in the bulk, yet it supports nontrivial surface states protected by symmetry.
The boundary behavior is therefore not immune to every possible disturbance. A perturbation that preserves the relevant protecting symmetry and keeps the system in the stated gapped phase may leave the boundary distinction intact. A perturbation that breaks that symmetry, closes the bulk gap, or changes the phase assumptions can remove or alter the protected behavior.

Short-range entanglement is part of the definition
SPT phases are short-range entangled: ignoring symmetry, they can be deformed to a trivial product-like state without encountering the obstruction that defines the nontrivial phase. The obstruction appears only when the protecting symmetry is required throughout the deformation. This is why two states can look equivalent if symmetry is ignored but distinct when symmetry-preserving operations are enforced.

- Protecting symmetry: for example, a time-reversal, internal, or spatial symmetry, stated precisely enough to test whether a perturbation preserves it.
- Dimension: the classification and possible boundary modes depend on whether the bulk is one-, two-, three-, or higher-dimensional.
- Gap condition: the reviewed SPT description assumes a bulk gap; closing it can permit a transition.
- Allowed deformations: the comparison must say whether arbitrary interactions, disorder, or symmetry-breaking terms are permitted.
- Boundary under discussion: a surface or edge state can be protected in one boundary geometry and modified by additional boundary degrees of freedom.
Landau and modern approaches compared
The following comparison is a guide to the questions each framework asks. It is not a claim that every phase belongs exclusively in one column; real systems can have conventional order and topological structure at the same time.
| Comparison axis | Landau-style classification | Topological and symmetry-based classification |
|---|---|---|
| What distinguishes phases | Local order parameter and spontaneous symmetry-breaking pattern | Global invariant, obstruction to a symmetry-preserving deformation, boundary or defect structure, or entanglement pattern |
| Core assumptions | A meaningful symmetry group and local order parameter | Specified symmetry, spatial dimension, gap structure, and state or Hamiltonian class |
| Stability test | Order persists until the symmetry pattern changes or the phase transition is crossed | Invariant persists while allowed perturbations preserve the required symmetry and, for the SPT examples here, the bulk gap |
| Typical observables | Bulk order, response of the order parameter, and critical fluctuations | Quantized or global responses, protected boundary modes, defect-localized modes, or entanglement diagnostics |
| Scope of entanglement | Does not by itself classify long-range entanglement | Can treat short-range-entangled SPT phases and, in separate frameworks, intrinsic long-range-entangled topological order |
| Role of interactions | Included through an effective free-energy description, subject to its validity | May change a classification obtained for noninteracting or mean-field Hamiltonians; the answer must state which setting is used |
How a modern stability analysis is performed
A reliable classification result is conditional. Use the following sequence before accepting a statement that two phases are “the same” or “different.”
- Define the objects being compared. Are they many-body ground states, band Hamiltonians, mixed states, defects, or boundary theories? A free-fermion band problem and an interacting many-body problem do not automatically share a classification.
- Fix the spatial dimension and geometry. The possible invariants, defects, and boundary modes depend on dimension. A surface state presupposes a bulk with a boundary; a defect classification presupposes a specified defect codimension and symmetry action.
- List the required symmetries. Distinguish internal symmetries from spatial ones such as reflection, and state whether time reversal or another antiunitary operation is imposed. A perturbation that violates one of these assumptions is outside the protected classification.
- Determine whether the spectrum is gapped. For an SPT comparison, record the bulk-gap requirement. For a gapless problem, classify the stable node, defect mode, or other low-energy structure under perturbations that preserve the chosen constraints.
- Choose the mathematical invariant or diagnostic. Depending on the class, this may involve homotopy groups, Clifford algebras, K-theory, a nonlinear sigma model, or a many-body invariant. The method must match the symmetry and Hamiltonian assumptions.
- Test an allowed interpolation. Try to construct a continuous path between the two states while preserving the stipulated symmetries and avoiding a forbidden gap closing. If such a path exists, they are equivalent within that class; if not, the obstruction supports distinct phases.
- Check boundary and defect consequences. A nontrivial bulk classification may require an edge, surface, or defect signature. Verify that the predicted mode is tied to the same symmetry and gap conditions rather than treating it as universally indestructible.
- Reassess interactions. If the calculation began with noninteracting or mean-field Hamiltonians, determine whether interactions preserve, reduce, or otherwise reorganize the classification.
Why free-fermion results cannot be applied universally
Many elegant classification tables begin with noninteracting or mean-field Hamiltonians. They are powerful because single-particle structure makes the symmetry constraints mathematically tractable, but they do not automatically describe all interacting many-body phases.
An article in Oxford PTEP (2016) gives a concrete example in which an integer classification obtained in a noninteracting setting collapses to a ℤ8 classification once interactions are included. The example demonstrates a change in the equivalence relation: several copies that were distinct before interactions become deformable into one another when symmetry-preserving interactions are allowed. It is a context-specific result, not a universal rule that every integer classification becomes ℤ8.

When reading a classification table, look for the words “free,” “noninteracting,” “stable,” “mean-field,” or “interacting.” Also check whether adding trivial bands or ancillary degrees of freedom is allowed. Those choices can alter which distinctions count as physically meaningful.
Long-range-entangled topological order is a separate problem
SPT phases are short-range entangled, but some topological phases have intrinsic long-range entanglement and can support exotic bulk excitations. Their classification involves data that cannot be removed by simply forgetting the protecting symmetry.
Mesaros and Ran’s 2013 work notes that classifying long-range-entangled topological phases in the presence of global symmetry was less understood than the short-range-entangled SPT problem it addresses. This distinction matters because “topological phase” is a broad phrase. A rule developed for SPT states should not be presented as a complete classification of all symmetry-enriched, long-range-entangled phases.
Symmetry enrichment adds another layer
In a symmetry-enriched phase, the underlying intrinsic topological order and the way global symmetry acts on its excitations both matter. Two systems can share the same intrinsic anyonic or long-range-entangled structure yet differ in symmetry assignments. Conversely, a symmetry can constrain whether certain excitations or boundaries are allowed. The classification therefore combines intrinsic topological data with symmetry action, rather than replacing one with the other.

Gapped and gapless phenomena use different stability questions
“Topological” does not mean “gapped” in every modern classification. The Chiu et al. review treats gapless systems as well as fully gapped ones, including modes localized on topological defects. For a gapped bulk, the key obstruction is often a gap closing along an interpolation. For a gapless node or defect mode, the question may instead be whether perturbations can remove, split, or move the feature while preserving the relevant symmetry and topological charge.

Therefore, a statement such as “the phase is stable” is incomplete without naming the object being stabilized. A protected surface state, a defect-bound mode, and a bulk invariant can have different allowed perturbations and different failure mechanisms.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating topology as a replacement for symmetry breaking
Correction: use Landau theory where local order distinguishes phases, and add topological or symmetry-protected diagnostics when it does not. A single material can exhibit both kinds of structure.
Mistake: calling a boundary state immune to every perturbation
Correction: identify the protecting symmetry and preserve the bulk conditions assumed by the classification. Symmetry-breaking terms or a bulk-gap closing can invalidate the protection statement.
Mistake: quoting a classification without its domain
Correction: state the dimension, symmetry group, gapped or gapless status, and whether the calculation is free, mean-field, or interacting.
Mistake: assuming an integer label has universal meaning
Correction: check whether interactions identify multiple copies. The cited ℤ-to-ℤ8 example shows why a free classification cannot automatically be promoted to an interacting one.
Mistake: using an SPT result for intrinsic topological order
Correction: determine whether the phase is short-range entangled or has long-range entanglement and exotic bulk excitations. Symmetry-enriched long-range-entangled phases require additional data.
The central lesson
Older and modern classifications answer related but different questions. Landau asks which local symmetry is spontaneously broken and what order parameter records it. Topological approaches ask whether global data, symmetry constraints, entanglement, or defect structure obstruct a continuous deformation. SPT theory makes the conditions especially explicit: a bulk gap and a protecting symmetry can stabilize nontrivial boundary behavior, but neither condition should be silently dropped.

There is no universal “modern stability rule.” The correct rule is the one defined for the stated phase class, dimension, symmetries, gap structure, and perturbations. Applying those conditions openly lets Landau, topological, and symmetry-protected methods work together rather than forcing one framework to replace the others.
