A new Nature study published 14 October 2026 estimates that most stem tetrapods could move their heads less than 6° sideways and less than 3° upward, with no meaningful head rotation. Separating the skull from the shoulder did not create the expected leap in neck mobility. The major exception was the long-necked Whatcheeria deltae, which could reach about 32° of lateral flexion and 12° of extension in the model.
What the study set out to test
Early tetrapods were the first vertebrates with a body plan suited to repeated movement at the water’s edge and on land. Their skulls became mechanically separated from the shoulder region, creating what is recognisably a neck. A common explanation is that this separation immediately allowed the head to move independently while the body remained still.
Dana E. Korneisel and colleagues tested that assumption by modelling the bending and twisting of the anterior axial column in six fossil taxa. Instead of treating the incompletely co-ossified vertebral column as automatically flexible, they estimated how much force its surrounding soft tissues could generate and how far the column could deflect before reaching that limit.

How a living sturgeon supplied the mechanical analogue
Why lake sturgeon were used
The analogue was the lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), whose axial column is dominated by a notochord and soft tissues rather than by a fully fused vertebral chain. Ten yearling sturgeon were dissected for material measurements. The tested columns retained the skull segment and caudal fin, so the notochord was not cut and its mechanical properties remained part of the specimen.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The researchers measured stiffness during lateral flexion, extension and torsion. Sturgeon are not fossil tetrapods, and their supraneurals and vertebral components are arranged differently, so the animal is a mechanical analogue rather than a literal reconstruction of fossil anatomy.
From fossil dimensions to movement estimates
The model combined the sturgeon material data with fossil reconstructions. It used Young’s modulus for bending, torsional stiffness for twisting, and the second and polar moments of area calculated from reconstructed axial-column cross-sections. Muscle force was estimated from pressure values measured for vertebrate striated muscle. An oval drawn around the occiput capped the available muscle area, making the calculated force an absolute upper bound rather than an optimistic guess about exceptionally large muscles.
Beam-bending equations then converted force into maximum lateral or dorsal deflection, while torsion equations tested rotational capacity. The geometry has a powerful effect: for a given cross-section and muscle force, the force required to bend the region falls with the cube of its bending length. Longer necks therefore gain mobility rapidly, whereas taller axial columns are generally harder to bend.

Validation against lungfish
The authors checked the approach against an independent in-vivo measurement in lungfish. A previous feeding-strike study recorded about 5° of cranial elevation over a 5 cm axial column. Depending on the scanned individual’s proportions, the new model predicted 5.25° or 8.75°, putting the estimate in the same range while showing how strongly body proportions affect the result.
Predicted mobility by taxon
| Taxon | Lateral flexion | Dorsal extension | Head rotation | Neck length relative to skull | Axial height-to-width ratio | Distinct skull–shoulder separation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eusthenopteron foordi | About 8.5° | Not stated in the study summary | No rotation predicted | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated; the study uses it as the earlier comparison point |
| Tiktaalik roseae | About 5.5° | About 2.25° | No rotation predicted | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Acanthostega gunnari | Less than 3° | Less than 1.5° | No rotation predicted | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Greererpeton burkemorani | Less than 3° | Less than 1.5° | No rotation predicted | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Trimerorhachis insignis | About 1° | Less than 1° | No rotation predicted | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Whatcheeria deltae | Up to 32° | About 12° | No rotation predicted | Nearly 20 cm long, about 89% of skull length | Not stated | Not stated |
The headline pattern is stiffness. Most of the sampled stem tetrapods remain below 6° of lateral movement and below 3° of dorsal movement. Eusthenopteron reaches about 8.5° laterally, but the model still finds no mobility jump between it and more crownward forms associated with skull–shoulder separation.
Why skull–shoulder separation did not automatically make a flexible neck
Detaching the head from the shoulder removes a skeletal connection, but movement still depends on the length, shape and material properties of the remaining axial column and on the force that muscles can apply. A short, tall or broad column can remain stiff even when the skull is no longer braced directly against the pectoral girdle.

The model therefore separates anatomical freedom from usable range of motion. The neck may have been an independent region in the skeleton while still permitting only a few degrees of bending under the available muscle force. The absence of predicted head rotation is especially important: the newly defined neck was not a swivelling joint in these early forms.
What Whatcheeria reveals about neck evolution
Whatcheeria is the clear outlier. Its nearly 20 cm neck, about 89% of skull length, gives the bending region the long lever arm that the other taxa lack. The model estimates up to 32° of lateral flexion and 12° of extension, demonstrating that substantial head movement was mechanically possible once neck proportions changed.
That result also explains why comparisons should not be reduced to whether a taxon possessed a separate neck. The relevant variables are neck length, axial-column height-to-width geometry and the cross-sectional area available for muscle. A long neck can be mobile even when its tissues are not intrinsically soft; a short neck can remain rigid despite a separated skull.

Implications for the move onto land
The authors argue that a stiff neck is compatible with amphibious or aquatic locomotion. Limited bending can reduce unwanted flexing during swimming and provide passive resistance against gravity when the animal’s head is supported above the substrate. On this interpretation, skull–shoulder separation was more likely a consequence of changes in forelimb-driven locomotion than an adaptation whose primary purpose was free head movement.
Higher neck mobility may have evolved later through longer necks and more mobile intervertebral joints. The transition to land therefore need not begin with a highly flexible head-and-neck system; it could begin with a mechanically restrained neck that later became more versatile.

- Sturgeon anatomy is comparable in its soft-tissue-dominated axial column but is not identical to stem-tetrapod anatomy; supraneurals and vertebral components are positioned differently.
- The occipital muscle outline deliberately sets an upper bound on force. Real muscles could have occupied less area or generated less pressure.
- Fossil reconstructions determine the moments of area, so changes in estimated height, width or neck length can alter the predicted angle substantially.
- The model addresses passive mechanical capacity under the tested loading conditions; it does not show that an animal routinely used its full calculated range during behaviour.

What this says about Tiktaalik and early tetrapods
Tiktaalik is predicted to have about 5.5° of lateral flexion and 2.25° of dorsal extension: enough for limited head adjustment, but not the highly mobile neck often implied by the phrase “fish-to-tetrapod transition.” Across the sampled lineage, the first necks were generally load-bearing, stiff structures. Independent head movement became substantial only in specialised long-necked forms such as Whatcheeria, not immediately when the skull separated from the shoulder.
