Mobile data sharing lets multiple lines or connected devices use one monthly data allowance. It can help when people on the same account use different amounts, but whether it is worth keeping depends on the full bill, the plan’s rules and what you can get now. Verizon says its shared-data plans are no longer available to add to accounts, so its legacy plan details are most relevant to existing customers—not a general picture of today’s wireless market.
What does data sharing mean on a mobile plan?
A shared-data plan pools an account’s monthly data allowance among eligible phone lines or connected devices. Instead of each device having its own separate allowance, devices draw from the shared pool. That does not mean the lines are free or that the account has only one charge: plan fees and per-device line-access charges may apply.
Verizon’s support pages describe this arrangement for its legacy plans. Its connected-device FAQ says eligible devices on a shared-data plan can use the shared allowance. The same page says those plans are no longer available to add to an account. Verizon’s connected-device plan FAQ
Can family members still get a shared data plan?
Availability depends on the carrier and market. For Verizon in the US, its support pages say shared-data plans are no longer open to new additions. That is a Verizon-specific availability statement, not proof that every carrier has stopped offering pooled plans. Check the current terms for the provider and region you are considering.

For someone already on a Verizon shared-data plan, published support information explains how the legacy arrangements work, but does not establish that every existing customer can keep the same terms indefinitely. How are shared-plan charges calculated?
Do not compare plans by allowance alone. Verizon’s published details for the legacy plan describe a shared data plan charge plus a line-access charge for each device. Verizon distinguishes between unlimited phone plans and eligible shared-data plans: its support material says connected devices on unlimited phone plans require their own data plan, while eligible connected devices on a shared-data plan can use the account’s shared allowance. When is a shared plan worth keeping?
A pooled allowance may suit a household whose members use different or changing amounts of data: unused capacity on one line can remain available to another. That structural benefit does not by itself prove savings. Compare the actual account bill and plan rules with current alternatives for the same number of lines.
- Total monthly cost: Include plan and per-line charges, taxes, surcharges and add-ons.
- Data arrangement: Check whether data is pooled or assigned separately to each line, and what happens when the allowance runs out.
- Device requirements: Confirm whether connected devices need separate data plans and what those plans cost.
- Account control: Consider whether everyone needs separate billing, account access or responsibility for payment.
- Switching terms: Check eligibility, promotions and any costs or conditions tied to changing plans.
For Verizon’s legacy plan, the available support details explain some charges and device rules, but do not provide a current all-carrier price comparison. Use your own bill and current offers rather than a legacy plan’s old headline price to judge value.

Can you split a family account and keep a discount?
Verizon’s Group Save information describes a way for some qualifying customers to split an account into separate accounts while retaining multi-line savings. Eligibility and conditions apply; the published information includes qualifying plan types and six months of line activity, as well as agreement, legal-age, credit-check and payment-responsibility conditions.
