Microscopic magnetic fossils, or magnetofossils, let scientists estimate how much oxygen was present in ancient bottom water. Magnetotactic bacteria build magnetic crystals whose shapes and magnetic behavior respond to oxygen and redox conditions. By calibrating those properties against modern sediments with measured oxygen levels, researchers can reconstruct past deep-ocean oxygenation from sediment cores.
What magnetofossils are
Magnetofossils are fossilized magnetic particles made by magnetotactic bacteria. These microorganisms form crystals of magnetic iron minerals—most commonly magnetite—and often arrange them in chains inside their cells. The chains help the bacteria orient themselves along Earth’s magnetic field while they seek a favorable chemical zone in the sediment or water column.
After the bacteria die, their crystals can survive as identifiable particles in marine sediment. Crystal size, shape, chain preservation and magnetic responses contain environmental information. In the latest calibrations, morphology and magnetic behavior track bottom-water oxygen more directly than simple particle abundance does.

A near-global modern calibration
A 2026 study analyzed modern surface sediments from many ocean basins and reported a near-global calibration between magnetofossil measurements and bottom-water oxygen. Coercivity fractions and crystal morphologies showed approximately linear relationships with oxygen concentrations from about 0 to 230 μmol/kg.

The study also separated two controls that can otherwise be confused. Organic-carbon supply mainly influenced how many magnetofossils accumulated, while oxygen was more closely reflected in crystal morphology and magnetic properties. A sediment with abundant magnetofossils is therefore not automatically a highly oxygenated or oxygen-poor site; carbon delivery can change abundance without producing the same change in morphology.
Regional confirmation in two ocean basins
A 2025 study in the Southeast Atlantic and Northeast Pacific calibrated magnetofossil dimensions and magnetic properties against known bottom-water oxygen profiles spanning 60–230 μmol/kg. The authors described this as the first calibration of a magnetofossil-hosted bottom-water-oxygen proxy using modern oxygen gradients. Its regional scope is narrower than the 2026 multi-basin dataset, but it provides an independent test across two contrasting ocean regions.

An oxygen gradient that comes from below
A separate 2025 investigation of Pacific ridge-flank sediments documented an unusual “mirror-world” oxygen system. Low-temperature hydrothermal fluids supplied dissolved oxygen from beneath the seafloor, so oxygen diffused upward rather than downward from overlying seawater.

How the proxy turns fossils into an oxygen estimate
- Collect sediment. Scientists obtain a modern surface sample for calibration or a dated sediment core for an ancient record.
- Verify biogenic crystals. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals crystal morphology and any intact chains. This helps distinguish magnetite made by bacteria from ordinary magnetic grains delivered by erosion or other geological processes.
- Measure magnetic behavior. Laboratories determine coercivity fractions and other environmental-magnetic parameters. Coercivity describes how strongly a magnetic field must be applied to change a grain’s magnetization; populations of biogenic crystals produce diagnostic distributions.
- Match the modern relationship. Measurements are compared with calibration sites where bottom-water oxygen has been independently established. The 2026 calibration covers approximately 0–230 μmol/kg, while the 2025 regional calibration covers 60–230 μmol/kg.
- Reconstruct older conditions. The calibrated relationship is applied to magnetofossils in older cores to estimate relative or quantitative oxygen changes. Age control, sediment composition, preservation and local water-mass history determine how confidently the result can be interpreted.
Why crystal form matters more than a simple particle count
Magnetofossil abundance records how much bacterial material was produced and preserved. Organic-carbon supply can increase that production, so abundance is strongly influenced by food availability and burial conditions. Oxygen-sensitive information is more evident in the crystals themselves: their dimensions, morphology, chain integrity and magnetic-property distributions.
This distinction is central to interpreting a core. A change in concentration may indicate altered productivity or carbon delivery rather than a change in oxygen. A coordinated shift in morphology and coercivity, especially when supported by microscopy and sedimentary context, provides stronger evidence for changing bottom-water oxygen.

Evidence from ancient climate change
Magnetofossils have already been used to investigate the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), an abrupt warming event about 56 million years ago. A Southeast Atlantic depth transect spanning roughly 1,500–3,600 m paleodepth indicated that deoxygenated seawater expanded downward during the early warming phase.

How magnetofossils compare with other paleo-oxygen evidence
Magnetofossils are most useful as one component of a multiproxy reconstruction. Their practical advantages and risks differ from chemical and fossil-based indicators.
- Quantification: Modern calibrations support relative and, within their tested ranges and settings, quantitative oxygen estimates. Other proxies may be primarily relative unless they have an equivalent site-specific calibration.
- Preservation: Magnetofossils are more likely to survive in non-reducing, non-sulfidic sediment. Strongly reducing or sulfidic conditions can dissolve or alter magnetic minerals, removing the original signal.
- Coverage: Calibration coverage is expanding from regional datasets toward many ocean basins, but it is not yet a universal meter for every sediment type or basin.
- Laboratory needs: Reliable identification combines TEM with rock-magnetic instrumentation. Magnetic measurements alone can be ambiguous when lithogenic grains or altered minerals are present.
- Environmental controls: The signal is tied to oxygen and redox conditions, but production, organic-carbon supply, sedimentation rate and post-depositional reactions can affect what is preserved.
Limitations and interpretation safeguards
- Do not convert magnetofossil abundance directly into an oxygen concentration; abundance is strongly affected by organic-carbon supply.
- Check crystal shape and chain structure with microscopy before assigning a bacterial origin to magnetic grains.
- Use the calibration range appropriate to the site. The reported modern relationships span approximately 0–230 μmol/kg in the multi-basin study and 60–230 μmol/kg in the regional study; extrapolating beyond those ranges adds uncertainty.
- Assess whether oxygen came from overlying bottom water or from a subsurface source such as hydrothermal fluids.
- Account for preservation. Reducing or sulfidic sediment can destroy the minerals that carry the signal.
- Combine magnetofossils with age control, sedimentology and independent oxygen indicators when reconstructing a major climate event.
Why this matters for deep-ocean history
The deep ocean contains little direct observational data before modern sensors and sampling programs. Magnetofossils preserve a physical and biological response to oxygen in sediments that can be millions of years old. The expanding modern calibrations make that response more measurable, while the ridge-flank discovery shows why local geochemistry must be understood. Used with microscopy, magnetic measurements and sedimentary context, these microscopic fossils provide a way to test when oxygen-poor waters expanded, how far they reached into the deep ocean and how marine microbes responded.
