Micron’s products occupy several different layers of an AI data center rather than serving as one interchangeable type of memory. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) sits beside accelerators for the fastest model calculations; DDR5 server memory gives CPUs a large working area; LPDDR5X modules such as SOCAMM2 add lower-power capacity on compatible servers; and NAND-based SSDs keep models and datasets available after power is removed.

The right mix depends on the accelerator, CPU platform, model size, batch size, inference traffic, storage interface and power budget. Micron’s specifications describe what each product is designed to do, but deployed performance depends on the complete server.

The memory hierarchy inside an AI server

An AI server repeatedly moves data between persistent storage, system memory and accelerator memory. Each tier trades capacity, bandwidth, latency, power and cost differently. Micron’s AI-data-center materials describe these components as complementary: an SSD may hold a model, DDR5 may stage data for the CPU, and HBM may feed the accelerator’s matrix engines at very high speed.

Technology Where it sits Primary job Key constraints
HBM4/HBM4E On or next to an accelerator package High-bandwidth working data for training and high-throughput inference Accelerator compatibility, capacity per stack, package and power limits
DDR5 RDIMM CPU/server memory channels General operating-system, application and preprocessing workspace CPU support, channel population, capacity, speed and ECC configuration
MRDIMM CPU/server memory channels Higher-bandwidth, lower-latency main memory on qualified platforms Platform qualification; not a universal drop-in replacement
LPDDR5X in SOCAMM2 Modular low-power server memory sockets Capacity-efficient server memory, including inference cache use cases Server architecture, serviceability design and module support
Data-center SSD Storage and cache tiers Persistent models, datasets, retrieval corpora and generated outputs Interface, endurance, latency, capacity and storage software

Capacity answers “how much data can be held”; bandwidth answers “how quickly can data be transferred.” A large SSD cannot replace accelerator HBM, and adding HBM does not eliminate the need for CPU memory or persistent storage.

HBM: the accelerator-near layer

Why HBM matters for model computation

HBM is stacked DRAM connected closely to an accelerator package. Training and high-throughput inference perform enormous numbers of operations on tensors, and the accelerator can spend time waiting if weights, activations or intermediate results cannot arrive fast enough. HBM’s wide interface is intended to keep those compute units supplied.

Micron’s HBM4 page lists more than 2.8 TB/s of bandwidth per stack, a 36GB capacity for a 12-high stack, a 2048-pin interface and an operating speed above 11.0 Gbps. Those are Micron-published specifications, not independent benchmark results, and they describe a component rather than the throughput of a complete server.

HBM works with, not instead of, server RAM

Micron illustrates a split in which the CPU uses DDR5 or LPDDR5 while the GPU or other accelerator uses HBM4. The CPU may prepare batches, manage data pipelines and run orchestration software in system memory while the accelerator keeps the hottest tensors in HBM. Moving data between these domains still consumes bandwidth and time, so software and platform designers try to keep frequently reused data near the accelerator.

Capacity and bandwidth trade-offs

A 36GB HBM stack can deliver extraordinary transfer rate, but it holds less than a large pool of server DRAM or SSD storage. Large models are therefore partitioned across multiple accelerators, multiple HBM stacks or other memory tiers. Increasing HBM capacity can reduce transfers, while increasing bandwidth helps when the workload is already resident but must be streamed repeatedly. Neither number alone predicts application speed.

DDR5 RDIMM and MRDIMM: the CPU working area

RDIMM for general server work

Registered DDR5 DIMMs provide the CPU-side working memory used by the operating system, data loaders, databases, networking services and preprocessing jobs. In an AI cluster, this memory can hold batches before they are sent to accelerators, maintain queues and caches, and support CPU-only portions of a pipeline. Micron’s data-center catalog positions DDR5 RDIMMs for enterprise servers and data centers.

Server memory must match the processor’s supported generation, channel layout, rank and capacity rules, firmware and error-correction requirements. A module that fits mechanically may still fail to boot or force a lower speed if the platform does not qualify it. Micron reported qualification samples of 256GB DDR5 RDIMMs built on its 1γ process and advanced die stacking in its fiscal 2026 filing. “Qualification samples” means testing with customers or platforms; it does not mean that every server accepts a 256GB module or that universal retail availability is established.

MRDIMM for qualified high-demand systems

Micron presents MRDIMM as a higher-bandwidth, lower-latency, high-capacity option for memory-intensive AI and high-performance-computing workloads on supported Intel Xeon 6 systems. The qualification phrase is important: MRDIMM is not a drop-in upgrade for an arbitrary DDR5 server. The processor generation, motherboard, firmware and vendor validation determine whether it can be installed and what speed is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MRDIMM can help when CPU-side memory traffic, rather than accelerator HBM bandwidth, is the bottleneck. It cannot turn an incompatible server into an MRDIMM platform, and it does not provide the accelerator-local access pattern of HBM.

SOCAMM2: LPDDR5X in a serviceable server module

What makes the design different

SOCAMM2 packages low-power LPDDR5X in a modular data-center form factor. Conventional LPDDR is often associated with fixed board designs, while Micron describes SOCAMM2 as a serviceable module intended to meet server reliability, availability and serviceability expectations. The module approach lets a compatible platform gain LPDDR’s power characteristics without permanently soldering every memory package to the motherboard.

Inference cache and capacity

Micron says SOCAMM2 can move an inference key-value (KV) cache out of HBM and into higher-capacity LPDDR. A KV cache stores attention-related information from earlier tokens so a language model does not recompute it for every subsequent token. Keeping more cache in a lower-power, larger-capacity tier can support longer contexts or more concurrent sessions, while HBM continues to handle the accelerator’s most bandwidth-sensitive work.

Micron’s product page describes a 192GB SOCAMM2 module and claims more than 20% greater power efficiency than its predecessor. Both figures are vendor statements; the efficiency comparison uses Micron’s stated predecessor baseline and should not be treated as a result for every server configuration. Actual benefit depends on memory traffic, controller design and how the software places the cache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility is decisive

SOCAMM2 is useful only in a server designed for the module’s electrical, mechanical and firmware requirements. Buyers should obtain the platform’s supported-part list and confirm capacity limits, replacement procedures, thermal specifications and operating modes before treating it as an upgrade path.

NAND SSDs: persistent models, data and cache

SSDs perform a different job from DRAM. They retain information when a server is powered down and provide the durable layer for training datasets, model files, retrieval indexes, checkpoints, logs and generated results. Micron separates a fast SSD data-cache layer from higher-capacity storage for datasets and models.

During a training run, storage may stream shards and checkpoints while CPU memory buffers data and HBM serves the active accelerator calculations. During inference, an SSD can hold many model versions or retrieval documents, but the serving stack normally loads hot data into memory before execution. SSD latency and queue behavior therefore affect startup, cache misses and data-feed efficiency; an SSD is not a direct substitute for high-bandwidth working memory.

Micron’s fiscal 2026 filing says it began volume production of G9 NAND-based PCIe Gen6 high-performance data-center SSDs in 2026. That production status is dated to the filing and does not by itself specify which server OEMs, capacities or regional configurations are available to a particular buyer.

How data moves through the layers

  1. Persist the source data. Training corpora, checkpoints and model artifacts reside on SSDs or a connected storage system.
  2. Stage a working set. CPU software reads data into DDR5 RDIMM, MRDIMM or a supported LPDDR5X module, where it can be decoded, shuffled and prepared.
  3. Transfer batches to the accelerator. The host sends tensors across the server’s CPU-to-accelerator interconnect. Transfer frequency and batch size depend on the platform.
  4. Compute in HBM. Weights, activations and temporary results that need accelerator bandwidth are placed in HBM. Multiple accelerators may divide a model or exchange intermediate data.
  5. Serve continuing requests. For autoregressive inference, a compatible design may keep a larger KV cache in SOCAMM2 or another system-memory tier while retaining the hottest data in HBM.
  6. Write durable results. Checkpoints, logs, updated indexes and outputs return to SSD storage so they survive reboots and can be replicated.

Every transfer across a tier boundary has a cost. Good system design keeps frequently reused data close to the processor that uses it and reserves lower tiers for capacity and persistence.

Which mix fits which AI workload?

Workload Memory pressure Micron layer that addresses it Decision focus
Large-model training Repeated tensor movement and distributed checkpoints HBM for accelerator kernels; DDR5/MRDIMM for input pipelines; SSDs for datasets and checkpoints Accelerator count, HBM capacity, interconnect and storage feed rate
High-throughput inference Many simultaneous requests and sustained token generation HBM for active computation; DDR5 or SOCAMM2 for queues and KV-cache capacity Concurrency, context length, latency target and power budget
Long-context inference Large KV caches that grow with active sessions SOCAMM2 or other supported system memory can supplement HBM Platform support, cache movement overhead and usable capacity
Retrieval-augmented generation Indexes and documents plus bursty reads SSDs for persistent corpus and index; DRAM for hot metadata; HBM for model execution SSD latency, endurance, cache hit rate and refresh policy
CPU-heavy preprocessing Large batches, decompression and feature engineering High-capacity DDR5 RDIMM or qualified MRDIMM CPU memory channels, capacity per socket and bandwidth

These are architecture patterns, not guarantees. A small inference server may use a different arrangement from a distributed training cluster, and software placement can change the bottleneck.

Micron’s published product status as of fiscal 2026

Product or milestone Status and date What the status means
HBM4 36GB, 12-high Volume production began in 2026 Micron reported production in its fiscal 2026 filing; availability still depends on accelerator and customer integration.
HBM4 48GB, 16-high Samples delivered to multiple key customers in 2026 Sampling is not the same as broad production or general purchasing availability.
HBM4E Volume ramp expected in calendar 2027 This is a forward-looking company expectation, not a completed production milestone.
256GB DDR5 RDIMM Qualification samples delivered in 2026 Samples were supplied for platform qualification; universal compatibility is not implied.
LPDDR5X in SOCAMM form factor Volume production began in 2026 for data-center workloads Use requires a server designed for the module.
G9 NAND PCIe Gen6 data-center SSD Volume production began in 2026 Specific capacity, firmware and OEM configurations vary by deployment.

Micron announced on June 10, 2025 that it was shipping HBM4 36GB 12-high samples to multiple customers and planned a 2026 ramp. Its later fiscal 2026 filing reported that volume production began in 2026, so the two statements describe different milestones rather than a contradiction.

How to evaluate a Micron memory component for a server

  1. Identify the job. Decide whether the component will feed an accelerator, expand CPU working memory, hold inference cache or provide persistent storage.
  2. Check the platform list. Confirm the exact CPU, accelerator, motherboard or baseboard, firmware version, memory socket type and supported capacities.
  3. Match the workload metric. Use bandwidth for streaming compute, capacity for model or cache residency, latency for request response, and endurance for write-heavy storage.
  4. Validate the configuration. Check channel population rules, rank limits, ECC requirements, thermal envelope, power delivery and whether mixing module types is permitted.
  5. Separate component claims from system results. Micron’s per-stack bandwidth or module-efficiency figures do not predict end-to-end tokens per second without the rest of the server and software stack.
  6. Confirm supply and lifecycle status. Sampling, qualification, volume production and a future expected ramp have different purchasing implications. Ask the system vendor which status applies to the exact part number.

For a standalone server-memory purchase, a query such as “Micron DDR5 ECC RDIMM” describes a specialist component rather than universal desktop memory. Verify the CPU and motherboard’s qualified vendor list, maximum capacity, supported speed and required DIMM layout before ordering.

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Calling HBM a replacement for RAM: Treat HBM as accelerator-near memory and retain a separate CPU-memory plan.
  • Comparing only capacity: Include bandwidth, latency, power and distance from the compute engine.
  • Installing MRDIMM in any DDR5 socket: Confirm support for the exact processor generation and platform firmware.
  • Assuming SOCAMM2 is a generic LPDDR upgrade: It requires a compatible modular server design and service procedure.
  • Using SSD capacity as a memory-speed claim: SSDs persist data and can cache it, but they do not deliver DRAM or HBM access characteristics.
  • Presenting vendor specifications as benchmarks: Label Micron’s figures as published specifications or claimed comparisons unless an independent test is available.
  • Ignoring dated status language: Do not describe samples or a planned 2027 HBM4E ramp as broadly shipping products.

What Micron’s financial figures do—and do not—show

Micron reported $43.09 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue for its Compute and Memory Business Unit (CMBU) and $37.59 billion for its Compute and Networking Business Unit (CDBU). These are segment totals, not measurements of AI-memory revenue, HBM revenue or SSD-only revenue. They indicate the scale of the company’s businesses but cannot be used to calculate how much AI data centers spend on any individual memory type.

Where the architecture is heading

The published roadmap points toward more capacity and bandwidth near accelerators, while system designers add lower-power tiers to control energy per inference. Micron’s HBM4 36GB 12-high product is in volume production as of 2026; 48GB 16-high parts were being sampled, and HBM4E volume ramp was expected in calendar 2027. Those milestones suggest continued product evolution, but the practical configuration will still be set by accelerator packages, server boards, software and customer qualification.

The durable design principle is tiering: keep the most bandwidth-sensitive data in HBM, give CPUs enough qualified server memory to prepare and coordinate work, use LPDDR5X modules where their power and capacity profile fits, and place persistent datasets and models on SSDs. No single Micron memory product performs all four jobs.
