Microfossil describes size, while body fossil and trace fossil describe what kind of evidence was preserved. A shell less than 1 millimetre across can therefore be both a microfossil and a body fossil. A footprint or burrow is a trace fossil whether it is tiny or extends across a large rock surface.
Keeping those classification axes separate makes fossil descriptions easier to understand and prevents a common mistake: treating “microfossil,” “trace fossil,” and “large fossil” as mutually exclusive categories.
The classification axes are different
Fossil terminology answers different questions. “How big is it?” leads to the term microfossil. “What was preserved: part of the organism or evidence of what it did?” leads to body fossil or trace fossil. “Large fossil” is an informal size description, not the opposite of either scientific category.
| Category | What the label describes | Typical examples | Main evidence provided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microfossil | Size: less than 1 millimetre across, using the Natural History Museum’s definition | Tiny shells, microscopic organisms, pollen, small bone or tooth fragments | Small organisms or fragments; in some cases, clues about former environments and climate |
| Body fossil | Physical remains of an organism | Bones, teeth, shells, wood, leaves | Anatomy and the organisms that lived in a particular place and time |
| Trace fossil | Preserved activity or interaction rather than the maker’s body part | Footprints, trails, burrows, root traces, coprolites | Behavior and interaction with the surrounding environment |
These labels can be combined. A microscopic shell is a microfossil by size and a body fossil by what it preserves. A large trackway is a trace fossil even though it is not microscopic. The correct description depends on which question the label is answering.

What makes a fossil a microfossil?
Size is the defining criterion
The Natural History Museum, London, uses “microfossil” for any fossil less than one millimetre across. The threshold refers to the fossil’s dimensions, not to whether the original organism was microscopic throughout its life. A fragment of a larger animal’s tooth or bone can fall below the threshold and qualify.
Because the category is based on size, it includes several kinds of preserved material:
- Complete remains of organisms that were very small.
- Fragments of larger organisms, such as tiny teeth or bone pieces.
- Small mineralized shells and other durable structures.
- Pollen grains and other microscopic biological remains.
Microfossils are often studied in sediments collected from many locations because a small sample can contain numerous specimens. Their abundance and sensitivity to changing conditions can make them useful for reconstructing past environments, although the fossil record remains selective rather than complete.

Small size does not indicate that a specimen records behavior. If the object is the shell, tooth, bone, or other physical part of an organism, it is a body fossil even when it is microscopic. A tiny burrow lining or a microscopic impression made by activity could be a trace fossil, but its trace status comes from the activity represented, not from its dimensions.

What is a body fossil?
It preserves the organism or a part of it
A body fossil is the preserved remains of an organism. Familiar examples include dinosaur bones, fish teeth, ammonite shells, trilobite exoskeletons, wood, and leaves. The British Geological Survey contrasts microscopic fossils such as foraminifera and pollen grains with larger, familiar fossils such as ammonites and trilobites; both groups can be body fossils when they represent physical remains.
Body fossils are especially valuable for studying form. A shell can show its shape and ornamentation, a tooth can reveal features of feeding anatomy, and a bone can preserve details of skeletal structure. These observations help establish which organisms occurred in a rock layer and how their anatomy varied.
A body fossil can be microscopic or large
There is no minimum size for a body fossil. A complete microscopic organism, a pollen grain, or a fragment of bone may be a body fossil. A large tree trunk or a nearly complete skeleton can also be one. “Large” and “small” describe dimensions; “body” identifies the kind of evidence.

It records activity, not the body part itself
A trace fossil preserves evidence that an organism interacted with its environment. The National Park Service lists footprints, trails, burrows, root traces, and coprolites as examples. In each case, the fossil records an action or biological product: walking, moving, dwelling, rooting, feeding, or producing waste.

The organism that made a trace may be absent. A footprint can remain after the animal’s bones have been destroyed or transported elsewhere. A burrow can survive even when the burrowing animal is unknown. Identifying the maker therefore often requires interpreting shape, position, and surrounding sediment rather than matching a preserved body part.
Trace fossils can be any size
Some traces are tiny marks or small burrows; others are broad trackways or extensive networks. Their size does not determine their category. A trace can also be associated with body fossils in the same layer, but the two kinds of evidence answer different questions: the body fossil concerns anatomy, while the trace concerns activity.
How the categories overlap
Use the following decision matrix when a specimen seems to fit more than one description.
| Preserved evidence | Less than 1 mm across? | Appropriate description | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny shell or complete microscopic organism | Yes | Microfossil and body fossil | It meets the size threshold and preserves physical remains. |
| Small bone or tooth fragment | Yes | Microfossil and body fossil | Its dimensions are microscopic, but it is still organismal material. |
| Large shell, leaf, or bone | No | Body fossil | It preserves a body part but does not meet the microfossil size definition. |
| Small burrow, trail, or root mark | Possibly | Trace fossil; it may also be a microfossil by size | The defining evidence is activity, with size as a separate descriptor. |
| Large footprint or trackway | No | Trace fossil | It records movement or interaction, regardless of scale. |
This is why “microfossil versus trace fossil” is not always an either-or comparison. One term measures dimensions; the other identifies the origin of the preserved evidence.

What each type can reveal
Body fossils: anatomy and presence
Body fossils provide the strongest direct evidence of an organism’s physical form. Their bones, shells, teeth, wood, or leaves can show anatomical features and establish that a particular kind of organism lived in the depositional setting. Microscopic body fossils can be particularly useful where larger remains are absent, but they still represent only the structures that survived fossilization.
Trace fossils: behavior and interaction
Trace fossils reveal actions that may leave no recognizable body remains. A footprint can indicate movement across a surface; a burrow can indicate dwelling or feeding; a root trace can document plant occupation of sediment; and a coprolite can provide evidence of biological processing and waste production. These observations can expose behavior that anatomy alone would not show.
Microfossils: organisms, fragments, and environmental signals
Microfossils can identify very small organisms or fragments that are easy to overlook in hand specimens. Assemblages of microscopic shells or pollen may help reconstruct former environments and climate, but interpretation depends on preservation, transport, and the setting in which the sediment accumulated. A microfossil is evidence of what was preserved at that size, not a complete census of ancient life.

Why some fossils preserve and others disappear
Hard parts have an advantage
The National Park Service and Natural History Museum both emphasize that durable structures are more likely to fossilize than soft tissues. Bones, teeth, shells, wood, and other resistant parts can persist after decay removes muscles, skin, and organs. As a result, a fossil assemblage is biased toward structures that withstand decomposition and chemical alteration.

Rapid burial improves the odds
Rapid burial can shield remains from scavenging, decomposition, and physical disturbance. Sediment that covers a body or trace soon after formation gives it a better chance of surviving long enough to undergo fossilization. Slow burial or prolonged exposure allows more time for decay, breakage, weathering, or removal.
Absence is not proof of absence
Because soft tissues and many behaviors rarely fossilize, the absence of a feature from a rock does not prove that the living organism lacked it. A body fossil may preserve only a shell or fragment; a trace fossil may preserve one episode of activity without the organism that made it. Interpretations should therefore distinguish what the specimen directly records from what must be inferred.
A practical way to classify an unknown specimen
You can apply the definitions in a consistent order without assuming that “large” and “small” are opposing fossil types.

- Ask what is physically preserved. If the object is a bone, tooth, shell, leaf, wood fragment, or other part of an organism, begin with “body fossil.” If it is a footprint, trail, burrow, root mark, coprolite, or another record of activity, begin with “trace fossil.”
- Check the size. Measure the specimen across its greatest relevant dimension. If it is less than 1 millimetre across, “microfossil” is an appropriate size descriptor under the Natural History Museum’s definition.
- Combine descriptors when needed. Report both dimensions when they add information: for example, “a microfossil body fragment” or “a small trace fossil.” Do not replace the evidence-based category with a size-only label.
- Separate observation from interpretation. Describe the preserved shape or material first. Treat the identity of the maker, behavior, former habitat, or climate as an interpretation supported by context, not as something automatically visible in the specimen.
- Account for preservation bias. Note that hard parts and rapidly buried material are more likely to survive. Avoid claiming that the fossil records the organism’s complete anatomy, behavior, or coloration.
Common misconceptions corrected
- “Every microfossil is a trace fossil.” No. A microscopic shell, pollen grain, bone, or tooth is a body fossil if it is organismal material.
- “A body fossil must be large enough to see easily.” No. Body fossils include microscopic remains and fragments.
- “A trace fossil must be tiny because traces are only marks.” No. Trackways and burrow systems can be large.
- “Large fossil is a formal category opposite to microfossil.” No. “Large” is a general size description, while microfossil has a defined threshold in the Natural History Museum’s usage.
- “A fossil tells the whole story of an organism.” No. Fossilization favors durable parts and rapidly buried material, so soft tissues and many behaviors are commonly missing.
Why the distinction matters
Using the right axis prevents errors in both identification and interpretation. Calling a tiny shell a trace fossil would confuse size with the kind of evidence preserved. Calling a footprint a body fossil would mistake an activity record for an anatomical remain. Describing a large trackway simply as a “large fossil” would omit the behavioral information that makes it a trace.
The most informative descriptions often combine terms: a microscopic body fossil, a large trace fossil, or a microfossil trace. That wording tells readers both how big the evidence is and whether it represents an organismal part or an activity. It also keeps conclusions proportional to what fossilization can preserve: body fossils are strongest for anatomy, traces for behavior, and neither category is a complete record of ancient life.
