Microbes could help a Mars habitat turn crew carbon dioxide, organic waste and wastewater into oxygen, edible biomass, recycled water and nutrients. Photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria and algae would use light, carbon dioxide and water to build organic matter while releasing oxygen. Other biological and physicochemical processors would have to treat wastes, recover nutrients and control the atmosphere. The result would be an engineered, connected life-support loop—not a tank of microbes that independently sustains astronauts.
This remains a technology-development concept. ESA’s MELiSSA program is developing linked biological and chemical processes for future long-duration missions, while NASA has studied biology for producing food and oxygen from Martian resources. No complete microbial life-support system is operating on Mars. NASA’s MOXIE experiment did make oxygen there, but by solid-oxide electrolysis rather than biology, and it produced no food.
What a microbial Mars life-support system would do
A crew continually exhales carbon dioxide, consumes oxygen and produces food waste, wastewater and other organic residues. A regenerative habitat would connect those streams instead of treating them as disposable.

Photosynthetic microbes receive carbon dioxide from cabin air, water, light and mineral nutrients. They convert part of the carbon into organic biomass and release oxygen. Some of that biomass could be processed into food; the rest would become feedstock for later treatment or storage. The oxygen would be returned to the habitat atmosphere after purification and safety checks.

Cyanobacteria are attractive candidates because they combine carbon fixation with oxygen production. ESA’s MELiSSA work identifies Arthrospira platensis, commonly called Spirulina, among its scientific domains. NASA has also described exposing cyanobacteria and other organisms to space and Mars-like conditions. Those experiments show that these organisms are being evaluated, not that an exposed culture could sustain a crew without a controlled habitat.
Waste and wastewater become process inputs
Photosynthesis alone cannot close a life-support loop. Human wastes contain nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon and salts in forms that may be toxic to a production culture. Separate microbial communities, filtration stages, chemical reactors and catalysts would break down organics, remove contaminants and convert nutrients into forms that plants or algae can use. Water recovered from wastewater would need purification before it entered either the crew supply or the biological stages.
NASA describes biological life support as a combination of crops, their microbiome and wastewater recycling. ESA’s MELiSSA architecture similarly links microbiological cells, algae, bacteria, plants, chemicals, catalysts and bioreactors to transform waste into useful resources. The engineering challenge is the integration: gas flows, liquid flows, nutrient balances and biological growth rates must remain stable together.

Food comes from edible biomass and crops
An edible algal culture could supply protein and other nutrients, while higher plants could provide additional calories, vitamins and dietary variety. Harvested biomass would have to be dewatered, processed and checked for contaminants before consumption. In a practical habitat, crops and microbial reactors would complement one another rather than one organism supplying every nutrient.

How the proposed loop would operate
- Capture cabin carbon dioxide. Air-management equipment directs crew exhalation and other carbon dioxide streams to photosynthetic reactors. Gas-flow control prevents the culture from receiving a damaging surge or starving when the crew load changes.
- Supply light, water and nutrients. Algae or cyanobacteria need a controlled illumination source, liquid water and the minerals required for growth. Nutrient streams would come from treated wastes, stored reserves or both.
- Grow oxygen-producing biomass. Photosynthesis fixes carbon into organic compounds and releases oxygen. Sensors and automated controls would regulate culture density, temperature, pH, gas transfer and harvesting rate.
- Separate products. Oxygen-rich gas would be cleaned and measured before entering the cabin. Edible biomass could be harvested, while residual solids and liquids would go to downstream treatment.
- Recover water and nutrients. Physical-chemical and microbial processors would remove pathogens, toxic compounds and excess salts, returning safe water and usable nutrient streams to the production stages.
- Manage residues and protect the crew. Any material that cannot be biologically recycled would be stabilized, stored or discarded. Isolation valves, redundant reactors and independent atmospheric controls would prevent a contaminated or failed culture from compromising cabin air.
The loop must be designed around variable crew demand. Oxygen consumption, carbon-dioxide production, food intake and waste composition all change with crew size and activity, so the biological capacity cannot be sized only for an average day.
Which organisms and subsystems are candidates?
Cyanobacteria and algae
Cyanobacteria can grow as suspended cultures and are capable of photosynthetic oxygen release and carbon fixation. Spirulina is a named MELiSSA domain because it is edible and can produce useful biomass. Algae and cyanobacteria could be harvested continuously, allowing a reactor to perform both gas exchange and food production.
Their limits are equally important. A culture can crash, become contaminated, accumulate unwanted compounds or lose productivity when light, temperature, nutrients or gas transfer drift outside its operating range. A Mars system therefore needs monitoring, sterilization or isolation procedures, reserve cultures and a non-biological way to keep the crew alive during recovery.

Plants require a suitable growth medium, root-zone water and controlled lighting; they cannot simply be planted in untreated Martian soil.

MELiSSA’s linked-cell approach
ESA describes MELiSSA as a series of connected compartments rather than a single “Mars algae tank.” Different cells or reactors perform tasks such as waste breakdown, nutrient conversion, algal production and plant growth. Its pilot plant is technology development for future long-duration missions, not a deployed Mars habitat. The value of this architecture is specialization: each stage can be optimized and isolated, although every additional stage adds plumbing, controls and failure points.
What has actually been demonstrated on Mars?
MOXIE proved oxygen extraction, not microbial life support
NASA’s MOXIE instrument on the Perseverance rover extracted oxygen from Mars’ carbon-dioxide-rich atmosphere using solid-oxide electrolysis. NASA reported that MOXIE ran 16 times and produced 122 grams of oxygen in total. At its best reported performance, it produced 12 grams per hour at 98% purity or better. The experiment completed its Mars mission in 2023.
MOXIE did not use microbes, grow food or recycle crew waste. It demonstrated one function—oxygen production from atmospheric carbon dioxide—at rover scale. NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy summarized the result: “MOXIE’s impressive performance shows that it is feasible to extract oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere – oxygen that could help supply breathable air or rocket propellant to future astronauts.”
Biological demonstrations remain terrestrial or exposure-based
NASA and ESA have tested organisms, crops and bioreactor concepts in laboratories, pilot facilities and space-exposure experiments. NASA’s investigations of cyanobacteria under space and Mars-like conditions address survival and performance questions, but they do not establish a full crew-scale process. ESA’s MELiSSA pilot plant likewise remains a development platform for future missions.

How much production area might be required?
NASA’s bioregenerative life-support overview gives approximate crop-area estimates of 20–25 square metres per person to provide oxygen and about 50 square metres per person to provide dietary calories. These figures summarize research and experience across space agencies; they are scale indicators, not a guaranteed design for Mars and not measurements for a microbial-only reactor. Lighting efficiency, crop selection, harvestable fraction, growth medium, crew diet and reserve capacity would all change the required area.
| Resource target | NASA approximate area | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| One person’s oxygen needs | 20–25 m² of crops | Approximate crop-area estimate; not a Mars design guarantee |
| One person’s dietary calories | About 50 m² of crops | Approximate area for calorie production; microbial reactors may have different geometry and productivity |
| Baseline Mars mission duration | About three years, including transit and surface stay | Duration cited by NASA to illustrate why in-place regeneration matters |
A roughly three-year mission makes recycling valuable because every kilogram of oxygen, water and food launched from Earth must be transported or stored for the entire mission. The same duration increases the consequence of biological instability: a culture that fails cannot simply be replaced by a quick resupply flight.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Martian soil is not automatically farmland
NASA studies of plant growth in amended Martian regolith simulant test a prepared growth medium, not unprocessed Mars soil as a complete farm. NASA describes a suitable medium as needing physical support, oxygen, ions and liquid. A habitat would therefore have to amend, sterilize or otherwise process local material before using it for roots.

This distinction also applies to microbial reactors. Local minerals might eventually supply some nutrients, but the organism’s chemistry, contaminant tolerance and water requirements must be verified. Until those supplies are characterized and controlled, a closed habitat would need stored nutrients and engineered growth media.

Biological systems versus physicochemical oxygen production
The useful comparison is not “which technology wins?” A biological loop can address several resources at once, whereas an electrochemical unit can target oxygen with a more direct process. Their evidence levels and operating dependencies are different.
| Comparison axis | Biological life-support concept | MOXIE-style physicochemical process |
|---|---|---|
| Primary function | Potentially combines oxygen, edible biomass, water recovery and waste treatment | Oxygen production from atmospheric carbon dioxide |
| Inputs | Light, carbon dioxide, water, nutrients, reactors, controls and downstream treatment | Atmospheric carbon dioxide, electrical power and a solid-oxide electrolysis unit |
| Demonstrated maturity for Mars | Laboratory, pilot-plant and space-exposure development; no complete system operating on Mars | On-Mars demonstration by Perseverance’s MOXIE instrument |
| Food production | Possible through algae, cyanobacteria and crops | None |
| System integration | Requires linked atmosphere, waste, water and nutrient loops | Demonstrated one output rather than a complete habitat loop |
| Failure planning | Must handle culture contamination, crop loss and biological recovery | Must handle hardware, power and thermal-control faults |
The cited sources do not establish a precise reliability advantage or a complete failure-rate comparison for either approach. A crewed habitat would likely need both biological regeneration and independent physicochemical backups so that a biological upset does not become an emergency.
Controls, safety and recovery requirements
A production reactor cannot be treated as an open aquarium. It would need continuous measurement of gas composition, liquid chemistry, biomass concentration and microbial health. Automated controllers could adjust lighting, flow and nutrient dosing, but crew procedures would still be required for sampling, maintenance and isolation.
- Gas safety: oxygen leaving a reactor must be purified and checked for unwanted gases or aerosols before cabin release.
- Biological containment: cultures, plant roots and waste processors need physical separation and decontamination paths so an organism cannot spread through air or water systems.
- Redundancy: multiple smaller reactors can allow one unit to be isolated while others continue operating.
- Stored reserves: tanks of oxygen, water and food remain necessary while a culture is started, harvested, repaired or replaced.
- Recovery protocols: a failed culture may require draining, cleaning, reseeding from a protected stock and temporarily switching to non-biological equipment.
These measures add mass and power, but they are essential because the system’s outputs are life-critical. The biological loop should reduce resupply demand without becoming the crew’s only immediate source of breathable air.
What would have to happen before a Mars deployment?
- Characterize individual organisms. Measure growth, oxygen release, edible yield, nutrient demand and contaminant production under controlled Mars-relevant conditions.
- Connect the compartments. Demonstrate that waste treatment, water purification, algal or cyanobacterial growth and plant production can exchange materials without accumulating toxins or salts.
- Operate for mission-length periods. Run integrated systems long enough to expose slow nutrient imbalances, biofilm formation, equipment wear and repeated harvest effects.
- Test disturbances and recovery. Deliberately vary crew-equivalent gas loads, lighting, temperature and feed composition, then demonstrate isolation and restart procedures.
- Validate growth media and local resources. Determine whether amended regolith products, recycled nutrients and stored supplies can support crops and microbial reactors safely.
- Deploy with independent backups. A flight system would need physicochemical oxygen production, stored consumables and spare biological capacity alongside the regenerative loop.
Until those steps are demonstrated at relevant scale and duration, “microbes making oxygen and food on Mars” should be understood as a promising architecture for future habitats, not an existing Martian capability.
