Metroidvania-style progression makes an open-world map a chain of questions. You notice a ledge, sealed tunnel, hazardous zone, suspicious mechanism or unexplained clue; another route gives you a new ability, item, quest state or piece of knowledge; you return and discover that the earlier obstacle now has a solution. The world may be geographically open from the start, but practical progress depends on what you can do and understand.

Open-world design expands this loop beyond the mostly authored sequence of a traditional Metroidvania. Several regions, quests or upgrades may be viable at once. That freedom creates stronger agency, but it also makes route clarity, pacing, map memory and difficulty balancing much harder.

The core progression loop

A Metroidvania gate is an obstacle that is intentionally visible before it is solvable. The player is expected to recognize it, remember it and reinterpret it later. Progress is therefore not just a march from one level to the next; it is a repeated change in possibility.

  1. Notice a future possibility. The game presents a barrier or clue through geometry, sound, visual effects, enemy behavior, dialogue or an unusual object. A high ledge suggests a movement upgrade; a brittle wall suggests a tool or attack; a sealed door may imply a key, faction permission or story event.
  2. Take a productive detour. Another path, activity, encounter, puzzle or secret remains available. The player is redirected, not simply stopped.
  3. Gain a capability or understanding. This can be a double jump, grapple, swimming skill, weapon function, key item, quest state, relationship change, code, rule or route knowledge.
  4. Find the earlier obstacle again. A readable map, journal note, landmark or memorable visual language helps the player connect the new capability to the old question.
  5. Receive a meaningful payoff. The return opens a shortcut, optional room, new region, story reveal, resource, combat option or another branch of the world.
  6. Recombine the map. Good gates create loops between regions. As shortcuts and alternate routes accumulate, the world becomes more connected rather than merely larger.

John Pywell, creator of Fountains, describes the principle as a world that is technically open at all times while tools and skills determine what can actually be completed. His formulation captures the distinction between geographic access and functional access: seeing a place is not the same as being equipped to use it.

In a linear Metroidvania, designers can usually predict which ability arrives next. In an open-world version, players may complete several activities before finding the relevant upgrade, and they may approach major objectives in different orders. Hidetaka Miyazaki has described this as balancing exploration, boss order and the progression of events across the map. The central design problem is preserving a sense of direction without taking away meaningful choice.

What counts as a gate?

Not every obstacle is a locked door. Designers can gate progress physically, mechanically, narratively or cognitively. The gate type determines what the player must change before the route becomes useful.

Ability gates

An ability gate requires a new movement or interaction capability. Climbing, dashing, gliding, grappling, swimming, phasing through matter or breaking a particular material are common examples. These gates are easy to communicate when the environment clearly demonstrates the missing action, but they become predictable if every upgrade only opens one matching surface.

Item and equipment gates

A key, tool, weapon mode or consumable can provide access. Item gates work best when the object has several applications. A cutting tool might open grates, disable traps and alter combat, rather than merely remove one color-coded barrier.

Quest and state gates

Some routes open after a boss defeat, character decision, faction relationship, world-state change or mission outcome. The physical space may have been reachable earlier, but its meaningful content was not. These gates tie exploration to narrative consequence and can make a return feel like a result of the player’s actions instead of a checklist.

Knowledge gates

A knowledge gate leaves the world physically open but withholds the information needed to use it. The player may need a code, a rule about an enemy, a pattern in a puzzle, a safe route through hazards or an understanding of how two systems interact. Echo Weaver is an explicit example: Unity describes it as having no ability gates, with the world open from the first minute and full exploration depending on what the player figures out.

Challenge and risk gates

A challenge gate is technically passable but practically discourages early entry through enemy strength, environmental danger, execution difficulty or resource pressure. This is softer than a permanent lock. It allows expert or adventurous players to attempt sequence breaks while giving most players a natural reason to return later with better equipment or mastery.

Why open-world gates feel different from traditional Metroidvanias

Design axis More directed implementation More open implementation
Route order Abilities arrive in a mostly authored sequence. Several regions, quests or unlocks can be tackled in different orders.
Gate strength Hard ability or item locks define the intended route. Danger, mastery, knowledge and optional rewards create softer boundaries.
Backtracking Revisits are frequent and deliberately authored. Players choose when to revisit, with shortcuts, fast travel and map memory supporting them.
Ability design An upgrade may target one recognizable obstacle type. A versatile tool is expected to support traversal, combat, puzzles and secrets.
Pacing Escalation and story timing are relatively reliable. Freedom increases agency but risks confusion, overpowered encounters or long stretches without a major unlock.
World readability Visual signposting can be strong and explicit. Systemic or naturalistic clues ask players to observe and remember more.

The larger the choice set, the more a game must communicate what is optional, what is currently viable and what is worth remembering. An open map without that communication can feel empty or arbitrary; a map with too many explicit locks can feel like a list of errands.

What makes a gate satisfying?

A satisfying gate creates curiosity before it creates frustration. Three tests are useful when evaluating any locked route.

Clarity: can the player recognize the question?

The obstacle should look intentional and distinct from ordinary scenery. A unique material, sound, animation, enemy behavior or architectural motif tells the player that the feature may matter later. Clarity does not require a label saying “return with double jump.” It requires enough evidence for a player to form a hypothesis and remember the location.

Versatility: does the capability change more than one interaction?

David Münnich of Supraland criticizes upgrades that only destroy a red wall or open a yellow door. Such locks are legible, but they offer little discovery. A stronger ability changes how the player reads several systems: it may expose alternate routes, alter combat spacing, interact with environmental physics and reveal secrets that were not visibly marked.

Payoff: does returning produce a new possibility?

Opening a passage should do more than remove a colored barrier. The return can reveal a shortcut between distant regions, a new optional room, a story consequence, a useful resource, a different combat approach or a route that loops back to a familiar hub. The player should feel that the earlier space has acquired a new meaning.

The best upgrades often create uses the player did not predict. That surprise is compatible with clarity: the game can teach the basic function while allowing players to discover broader applications through experimentation.

How to make backtracking engaging instead of tedious

Backtracking is engaging when the player’s state has changed. Walking the same corridor with no new decisions is repetition; returning with a new tool, route or interpretation is exploration.

Build shortcuts into the first traversal

Doors that unlock from the far side, elevators, ladders, one-way drops and hub connections compress future travel. A player may still cross familiar territory, but each shortcut turns the map into a network rather than a collection of disconnected trips.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use layered routes

Place regions above, below and beside one another so a new movement skill changes the geometry. A grapple might connect rooftops, a swim ability might reveal an underground layer and a dash might cross gaps that were previously visible but unreachable.

Support memory without replacing it

Distinct landmarks, a journal, map annotations and clear region names help players recover unfinished questions. Optional markers are especially useful in a large world, but automatic marking should not remove all need for observation. The goal is to reduce needless search, not to turn every gate into a waypoint.

Make the return reveal relationships

A newly opened route should explain something about the world: a starting-area door may connect to a late-game zone; a hidden lift may expose why two settlements are adjacent; a movement skill may reveal that several regions share the same underlying structure. These connections provide a reason to care about the map as a whole.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps’ creative director has described a Metroidvania as one huge puzzle in which changing an element on one side of the world can affect a location on the other. That interconnectedness is powerful, but it raises the cost of every change: designers must check that new routes, encounters, rewards and story states still make sense after multiple possible unlock orders.

How abilities, quests and knowledge can coexist

An open-world game does not need to choose one gate type. Combining them gives different players different ways to progress while preserving a common discovery rhythm.

  • Physical route plus knowledge: a passage is reachable, but a code or environmental rule explains how to operate it.
  • Ability plus challenge: a dash makes a crossing possible, while precise timing determines whether it is safe.
  • Quest state plus optional ability: a faction grants access to one route, while an alternate path remains available through exploration.
  • Item plus systemic use: a tool opens a hatch, changes combat and interacts with environmental puzzles.

This layered approach avoids making the main route depend on a single binary lock. Players who miss one clue may find another solution, while players who experiment can reach optional content early at greater risk.

Examples of the pattern in open-world or exploratory games

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Ubisoft chose a 2.5D Metroidvania structure to support exploration, puzzles and combat ideas that could also work in a broader action game. Acquired powers and skills are used in demanding sequences, so progression is tied to both what the player can do and how well they can execute it.

High On Life

Its developers describe branching missions and explorable areas that naturally led to ability-gated return visits. The example shows that the loop can operate inside a comparatively narrative-led action game: a mission can introduce the player to a blocked branch, while a later weapon or ability turns that branch into an optional discovery.

Fountains

John Pywell’s description emphasizes a technically open world whose practical boundaries are defined by tools and skills. The player can see or approach many places early, but progression depends on collecting the capabilities that make those places usable.

Echo Weaver

This is a useful counterexample because it removes permanent ability gates. Unity describes the world as open from the first minute, with secrets, memory and loop rules supplying the discovery structure. It demonstrates that Metroidvania-style return-and-reinterpret play does not require sealed doors.

Supraland

Its design discussion focuses on abilities with multiple uses and on experimentation rather than obvious single-purpose locks. The lesson is that an upgrade is most valuable when it changes the player’s mental model of the environment.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Its interconnected spaces illustrate the map-as-puzzle approach. Customizable Spirit Shard loadouts also let players adapt how they handle traversal and combat, showing how progression can broaden play style instead of only adding keys.

How designers balance freedom, pacing and difficulty

Open-world Metroidvania progression creates several trade-offs that do not appear as sharply in a linear map.

Preventing aimlessness

Offer multiple viable objectives, but make their differences legible. Region landmarks, quest language, enemy difficulty, environmental signals and map layers can indicate likely order without enforcing one route. Optional content should be distinguishable from a required progression gate, especially when both use similar visual language.

Preventing accidental sequence breaks

Soft gates can be intentionally permissive, but designers should decide what happens when a player arrives early. An early route may offer a difficult challenge, reduced rewards, a partial explanation or a shortcut that does not bypass essential story logic. The game should fail gracefully rather than relying on an invisible wall.

Maintaining a useful upgrade cadence

If several regions can be explored before the next major ability, players may spend a long time collecting minor rewards without changing their movement vocabulary. Conversely, frequent upgrades can make earlier abilities feel disposable. The pacing target is not a fixed number of minutes; it is a steady alternation between forming questions, gaining capabilities and seeing those capabilities matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserving difficulty coherence

Different unlock orders can produce large differences in equipment and skill. Enemy patterns, optional challenges and reward placement should accommodate that range. Miyazaki has identified the tempo of progression across a vast, open-ended map as a central challenge: freedom must not make the story drag or make one route trivialize another.

A practical checklist for evaluating a game’s progression

  • Can you identify what an obstacle is asking without a tutorial label?
  • Does the game give you another meaningful activity when a route is currently unavailable?
  • Will the new ability, item or knowledge have several uses?
  • Can you find earlier points of interest through landmarks, notes or map tools?
  • Does a revisit provide a shortcut, secret, narrative change, new route or system interaction?
  • Are optional challenges clearly separated from required progression?
  • Can you approach major objectives in more than one order without breaking pacing?
  • Does the world become more connected as gates open?

The defining idea is simple: an open-world Metroidvania does not merely hide content behind locks. It teaches the player to read the world as a set of unfinished questions, then rewards a changed capability or understanding with a new answer. Physical ability gates, quest states, knowledge and risk can all produce that rhythm. The quality of the experience depends on whether each return adds agency and meaning rather than distance.
