Meta makes almost all of its money by selling digital advertising. In fiscal 2025, Meta Platforms, Inc. reported $200.966 billion in total revenue, including $196.175 billion from advertising. Facebook and Instagram supply most of the advertising inventory, while WhatsApp contributes to a smaller, aggregated “other revenue” category through paid messaging. Reality Labs sells devices, software and content, but it remains a large investment rather than a profitable division.
The clearest way to understand the business is to separate Meta’s two reporting segments: Family of Apps and Reality Labs. Family of Apps generated $198.759 billion in 2025; Reality Labs generated $2.207 billion and recorded a $19.193 billion operating loss. Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, says that “Substantially all of our revenue is currently generated from advertising.”
Meta’s 2025 revenue in one view
Meta reports its business in two operating segments. Family of Apps contains the company’s social and messaging services, while Reality Labs contains its virtual-, augmented- and mixed-reality hardware, software and content activities. The 2025 figures below come from Meta Platforms, Inc.’s fiscal-year 2025 Form 10-K filed in 2026.
| Business or revenue line | 2025 revenue | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Total Meta revenue | $200.966 billion | All reported revenue for fiscal 2025 |
| Advertising | $196.175 billion | Ads delivered across Meta’s services, primarily in Family of Apps |
| Family of Apps | $198.759 billion | Revenue from Meta’s social and messaging-app segment |
| Other revenue | $2.584 billion | Aggregated non-advertising revenue; Meta identifies paid messaging from WhatsApp as one contributor |
| Reality Labs | $2.207 billion | Consumer hardware, software and content |
The categories are not interchangeable. Advertising is a company-wide revenue type, whereas Family of Apps and Reality Labs are operating segments. Most advertising is associated with Family of Apps, but the filing’s segment and revenue-type totals should not be added together as if they were separate businesses.

Why Facebook and Instagram can be free
People do not generally pay a monthly fee to use Facebook or Instagram. Instead, users supply attention and activity: they watch videos, read posts, follow accounts, search, message and interact with content. Meta packages opportunities to appear alongside that activity and sells them to advertisers.
An advertiser is buying access to an audience and a chance to achieve an outcome such as a click, app install, purchase or lead. Meta’s systems decide which eligible ad to show in a particular placement. The advertiser’s payment can be tied to an impression, click or another campaign objective, while Meta records the resulting amount as advertising revenue.
This model creates a two-sided exchange:
- Users receive services without a standard access charge. Their activity helps create an audience and inventory in which ads can appear.
- Advertisers pay for distribution and measured results. They set a budget, audience parameters, creative and objective, and Meta’s ad-delivery systems allocate opportunities to eligible campaigns.
- Meta operates the infrastructure and measurement. It provides the apps, recommendation systems, ad tools, delivery technology and reporting that connect advertisers with users.
Meta’s filing describes 2025 advertising growth as coming from both more ad impressions delivered and a higher average price per ad. That is the basic economic engine behind a free-to-use social platform: increase the amount of useful inventory, improve the value of each opportunity, or do both without damaging user engagement.
How Meta’s advertising engine works
1. Advertisers create campaigns
Businesses choose an objective, audience, budget, schedule, creative and destination. A campaign might promote a product page, video, mobile application, event or lead form. The advertiser is not purchasing a fixed number of followers; it is purchasing delivery opportunities under the campaign’s selected constraints.
2. Meta matches ads to available placements
When a person opens a feed, watches a video or uses another ad-supported surface, Meta can evaluate campaigns that are eligible for that placement. Its delivery systems consider factors such as the campaign’s bid or budget strategy, the predicted value of showing the ad and the expected user experience. The exact auction mechanics and optimization methods vary by product and objective, but the commercial result is an opportunity to sell an impression.

3. Delivery becomes measurable inventory
An impression is an instance in which an ad is delivered or displayed according to Meta’s reporting rules. More impressions can raise revenue when demand and pricing remain healthy. Meta reported that advertising revenue rose by $35.54 billion, or 22%, in 2025 compared with 2024. The same filing reported a 9% increase in average price per ad over that period.
4. Price reflects demand and ad value
Average price per ad is not a universal sticker price. It is an aggregate measure influenced by advertiser demand, the audiences being reached, the placements used, campaign objectives, geography, seasonality and the quality or expected performance of available inventory. A 9% increase means the average realized price across Meta’s reported advertising activity was higher in 2025 than in 2024; it does not mean every advertiser paid 9% more for every placement.

Advertisers continue spending when they can measure delivery and outcomes against their objectives. Reporting on impressions, reach, clicks, conversions or other results helps a business adjust creative, audience and budget. Meta’s revenue therefore depends not only on having users, but also on maintaining advertiser demand for the available inventory.
Facebook and Instagram: the main advertising businesses
Facebook and Instagram are not separate revenue segments in Meta’s public financial statements. Meta includes them in Family of Apps and sells advertising placements across the services. The company’s 2025 filing attributes advertising growth to increases in ad impressions delivered and average price per ad, rather than publishing a standalone Facebook total or Instagram total.
Facebook’s role
Facebook offers multiple surfaces where ads can appear, including feed and video experiences. Its large, established user base gives advertisers broad reach and a range of audiences. Revenue is generated when campaigns deliver paid placements, not when a user creates an account or posts content.

Instagram’s role
Instagram contributes advertising inventory through visual and video-oriented experiences. Advertisers can select placements and creative formats suited to discovery, engagement, traffic or conversions. As with Facebook, Meta does not disclose a separate Instagram revenue figure in the cited 2025 filing, so any precise platform-by-platform split would be an estimate rather than a reported result.

Why Meta reports them together
Meta manages these services through shared technology, advertising systems, infrastructure and sales operations. Reporting Family of Apps as one segment gives investors a view of the combined economics, but it limits the precision with which outsiders can assign revenue or profit to an individual app.
How WhatsApp makes money
WhatsApp is included in Family of Apps, but Meta does not publish a standalone WhatsApp revenue total. The 2025 Form 10-K identifies paid messaging from WhatsApp as part of aggregated “other revenue.” That disclosure establishes a revenue mechanism, not a dollar amount for WhatsApp alone.
Paid messaging
Paid messaging refers to commercial messaging products in which a business pays for certain message-delivery or conversation capabilities. The payment is associated with the business use of messaging rather than a subscription charged to every individual user. Because Meta groups this revenue with other non-advertising items, the filing does not show how much came from WhatsApp, how much came from another product or how the total changed year over year.
What cannot be concluded
- There is no reported standalone WhatsApp revenue number in the cited filing.
- WhatsApp’s user scale should not be converted directly into revenue without a disclosed monetization rate.
- It is not accurate to say that WhatsApp is funded entirely by advertising; the specific revenue item Meta identifies is paid messaging, while the company reports advertising and other revenue at broader levels.
WhatsApp can therefore be strategically important even when its reported direct revenue is not separately visible. A large messaging network may support future business-messaging products, but the 2025 filing does not quantify that potential.

Reality Labs: hardware and content revenue, but a large loss
Reality Labs sells consumer hardware, software and content. Its products are different from the advertising model: revenue is recognized when customers buy devices, software or content rather than when an advertiser buys an impression.
Reality Labs generated $2.207 billion in revenue in 2025 and recorded a $19.193 billion operating loss. The comparison is central to understanding Meta’s strategy. The division produced real sales, but its reported operating costs were far greater than those sales during the year.
What the operating loss means
An operating loss means the segment’s revenue did not cover its operating expenses for the period. Those expenses can include product development, research, engineering, manufacturing-related costs, marketing, content and other operating activities. The figure is not a claim that every individual device loses money or that Reality Labs can never become profitable; it describes the segment’s reported result for fiscal 2025.
Why Meta continues investing
Reality Labs is positioned as a long-term platform effort involving immersive hardware and software. Management may accept current losses while developing products, lowering costs, building a developer ecosystem and expanding adoption. That investment profile differs from Family of Apps, whose mature advertising business supplies most of Meta’s current revenue.

How to evaluate Reality Labs
Revenue alone is insufficient. A useful assessment pairs sales with the operating result, adoption trends, product pricing, software and content activity, and the scale of continuing investment. In 2025, the $2.207 billion revenue figure must be read alongside the $19.193 billion operating loss; presenting the sales figure without the loss would materially misrepresent the segment’s economics.

What the 2025 numbers say about Meta’s priorities
Advertising remains overwhelmingly dominant
Advertising revenue of $196.175 billion represented nearly all of Meta’s $200.966 billion total revenue. Meta explicitly states that substantially all of its revenue is currently generated from advertising. The company is therefore highly dependent on the health of digital-ad demand, the quality of its ad inventory and its ability to keep advertisers spending.
Family of Apps finances the company
Family of Apps revenue was $198.759 billion, far above Reality Labs’ $2.207 billion. The segment includes the services that supply Meta’s established advertising engine and the smaller non-advertising activities reported in aggregate.
Reality Labs is an investment case, not a current profit center
The $19.193 billion operating loss shows that Reality Labs materially reduced Meta’s consolidated operating result in 2025. Readers evaluating Meta should treat the division as a major long-term investment with current revenue, not as a second mature earnings engine.

Meta’s annual filing provides the broadest fiscal-year view, while quarterly reports can show whether trends are accelerating or slowing. For an update after the fiscal 2025 filing, check the newest filing for revised segment revenue, advertising revenue, impression growth, average price per ad and Reality Labs’ operating loss.
Keep the reporting definitions consistent when comparing periods:
- Compare advertising revenue with advertising revenue, not with Family of Apps revenue.
- Check whether a percentage change is year over year, quarter over quarter or based on a specific period.
- Carry the qualification that WhatsApp revenue is not separately disclosed.
- Read Reality Labs revenue and operating loss together.
- Distinguish a change in ad impressions from a change in average price per ad; Meta can grow through either or both.
The practical answer to “How does Meta make money?”
Meta gives away access to its major social and messaging services and monetizes the attention and commercial intent those services attract. Advertisers pay for placements, and Meta’s revenue rises when it delivers more impressions, earns higher average prices, or both. In fiscal 2025 that advertising engine generated $196.175 billion of the company’s $200.966 billion total revenue.
WhatsApp adds a smaller, less transparent monetization path through paid messaging reported inside aggregated other revenue; no standalone WhatsApp figure is available. Reality Labs earns money by selling hardware, software and content, but its $2.207 billion of 2025 revenue came with a $19.193 billion operating loss. The result is a company whose present economics are overwhelmingly advertising-led, with messaging monetization developing and immersive hardware still in an investment phase.
