A 2020 study of nearly 40,000 scientists found that protégés of mentors who later won prizes were more likely than matched peers to reach several measures of scientific achievement. The association varied by outcome, and the study does not show that mentorship caused success. It also found links between achievement and intellectual independence from a mentor’s research topics—not evidence that protégés should avoid collaboration or change fields.
What the 2020 study found
In “Mentorship and protégé success in STEM fields,” Yifang Ma, Satyam Mukherjee, and Brian Uzzi analyzed genealogical and performance records for nearly 40,000 scientists and 1,167,518 papers in biomedicine, chemistry, mathematics, and physics from 1960 to 2017. They compared protégés of mentors who later won prizes with protégés of other mentors who had similar records and reputations, matching for expected talent and success. The authors wrote that “mentorship strongly predicts protégé success across diverse disciplines.” Read the paper in PNAS.
The reported differences were relative likelihoods, not absolute chances of success:
| Outcome | Relative likelihood among protégés of future prize-winning mentors |
|---|---|
| Winning a prize | 2.1 times as likely as matched protégés of other mentors |
| Election to the National Academy of Sciences | 1.4 times as likely as matched protégés of other mentors |
| Meeting the study’s “superstar” outcome | 1.5 times as likely as matched protégés of other mentors |
“Superstar” is the authors’ defined outcome, based on high scientific recognition and performance, including top citation standing and prize-related achievement. It should not be read as a general label for a person. The estimates also cannot be converted into an individual scientist’s probability of winning a prize or receiving another honor.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What mentorship and research independence have to do with one another
The authors found that protégés of future prize-winning mentors were more likely to pioneer original research topics and become “late bloomers” in midcareer. In their dataset, protégés’ success was not highest simply when they followed their mentors’ topics or coauthored a large share of their work with them. The authors summarized this pattern by saying protégés did their best work when they broke from their mentors’ topics and coauthored only a small portion of their research with them.
That is a finding about association in this dataset, not a tested recipe for success. It does not establish that changing research topics or limiting coauthorship will improve a protégé’s outcomes. Nor does it mean that working in a mentor’s area or publishing together is harmful. Mentorship can support a researcher while still leaving room for independent questions and contributions.

How strong is the evidence?
The study’s models explained 34–44% of the variance in protégé success. Matching protégés to peers whose mentors had similar records and reputations helps make the comparison more informative than a simple count of successful scientists, but it cannot account for every difference between people and mentoring relationships. Because the study was observational, it identifies associations rather than proving that mentorship caused the measured outcomes.

- Interpretation: The results concern relative likelihoods among matched groups, not a prediction for any one scientist.
- Causal limits: The study did not randomly assign mentors or test an intervention that changed mentoring practices.
- Scope: The findings do not automatically generalize to other disciplines, career systems, or mentorship settings.

What readers can reasonably take from the findings
The results support the idea that mentorship is associated with important scientific outcomes, while underscoring that the relationship is not a guarantee and cannot be reduced to a mentor’s fame. For a protégé, the study offers evidence that independent research development can accompany success. It does not tell researchers to select a particular kind of mentor, leave a mentor’s topic, or avoid coauthoring; those choices depend on the research, career stage, and working relationship.
For a practical overview of mentorship practices and the evidence behind them, the National Academies’ The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM discusses effective mentoring and calls for more study designs capable of supporting stronger causal and longitudinal conclusions about mentorship processes and outcomes.
