Yes—you can ride the MBTA by tapping an eligible debit or credit card in Apple Wallet on an iPhone or Apple Watch. MBTA treats this as a pay-as-you-go contactless payment. If you enable Apple’s Express Mode for the selected card, you can tap at a Charlie reader without unlocking the device or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
That is separate from a Charlie transit card stored in Wallet. MBTA’s Charlie system is being introduced in stages, and its Wallet instructions mention a fee for a new mobile Charlie Card without stating the amount or confirming universal public availability. The practical choice today is therefore between Wallet-based bank-card payment and whatever Charlie Wallet features are enabled for your account, device, and rollout phase.

What you can use in Apple Wallet today
There are two different ideas that are easy to confuse:
- Contactless bank-card payment: Add a debit or credit card to Apple Wallet and tap the iPhone or Apple Watch at a Charlie reader. The fare is charged to that payment credential as you ride.
- A Charlie Card in Wallet: This is an MBTA transit credential within the Charlie system. MBTA describes the system as a staged rollout, with some functions available and others still being tested. The instructions refer to a fee for a new mobile Charlie Card, but do not publish the fee amount or establish that every rider can add one now.
Express Mode belongs to Apple Wallet’s tap behavior. It is not a separate MBTA fare product, pass, discount, or stored-value balance. It simply allows an eligible selected Wallet card or transit item to be used at a reader without the normal unlock or authentication step.

Apple Wallet payment versus a mobile Charlie Card
| Question | Debit or credit card in Apple Wallet | Charlie Card in Wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Payment model | Pay as you go using the linked bank-card account | Charlie transit credential; exact availability and feature set depend on the staged rollout |
| How you start | Add an eligible debit or credit card in Wallet | Use the Charlie setup offered to your account and device, if available |
| Express Mode | Can allow a tap without unlocking or authenticating | MBTA also describes Charlie Card taps as compatible with Express Mode, but availability is not guaranteed for every rider |
| Reduced fare | Not automatic; an eligible benefit must be linked to the intended contactless credential | Depends on the Charlie benefit and account configuration |
| Availability | Documented MBTA contactless payment method | Staged rollout; broad public availability and final fee are not established in the current instructions |
Do not assume that adding a bank card to Wallet converts it into a Charlie Card, or that an existing plastic CharlieCard can be transferred into Apple Wallet. The available MBTA instructions do not confirm such a transfer process.
What you need before setup
- An iPhone or Apple Watch that supports adding your payment card to Apple Wallet.
- An eligible debit or credit card. Your card issuer may ask you to verify your identity during setup.
- Access to a Charlie reader when you travel.
- If you use a reduced-fare program, confirmation of the specific benefit and the contactless card, phone, or watch to which it is linked.
MBTA’s published instructions do not identify a universal list of supported iPhone or Apple Watch model numbers in the material covered here. If Wallet refuses your card, follow the issuer’s verification prompts and check Apple’s device and card requirements rather than assuming the reader is at fault.
How do I use Apple Pay on the T?
Add a debit or credit card on iPhone
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the + button.
- Choose the option to add a new card or a card you have used previously.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to scan or enter the card details.
- Complete any identity verification requested by the card issuer.
Once the card appears in Wallet and is ready for contactless use, it can be selected at the Charlie reader. Adding the card does not by itself create a stored-value Charlie account or apply a reduced fare.
Add a card for Apple Watch
MBTA’s Watch instructions begin with the Wallet card flow for the watch. Open Wallet on the Apple Watch, use the add-card control, and complete the prompts. Depending on the setup, the issuer may require verification on the paired iPhone or through another method.
A card added to an iPhone is not necessarily the same credential selected for the watch. Check the Wallet cards on the device you intend to tap, especially if you keep separate personal and work cards.

How do I set up Express Mode for the MBTA?
Express Mode is the setting that removes the usual authentication step for a selected eligible Wallet card, pass, or key. Apple says it may be turned on automatically when an eligible travel card or compatible Wallet item is added; MBTA likewise notes that it may be enabled automatically. Check the selected card before your first trip.
Check Express Mode on iPhone
- Open Wallet and select the card you plan to use.
- Open the card’s more-options menu.
- Choose Card Details.
- Look for Express Transit Settings or Express Mode; the wording can vary by device software.
- Select the card for transit taps, then confirm if the device asks.
With that card selected, hold the top of the iPhone near the Charlie reader. You should not need to wake, unlock, or authenticate the phone first.

- On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Under Transit Cards, choose Express Transit Card.
- Select the card you want the watch to use.
- Authenticate with the watch passcode if requested.
At the gate or onboard reader, hold the watch display near the reader. The watch uses the card selected in its Express Transit settings, which can differ from the card selected on the iPhone.
Turn Express Mode off
Open the selected card’s details and switch Express Mode off. MBTA also describes choosing None as a way to disable Express Mode for all Wallet cards. After disabling it, the normal unlock or authentication process applies when you pay.
Do I need to unlock my iPhone to tap on the MBTA?
Not when Express Mode is enabled for the eligible card you intend to use. The iPhone can remain locked while you tap. Without Express Mode, expect to follow the ordinary Wallet authentication flow. The same principle applies to an Apple Watch configured with an Express Transit Card.

Express Mode does not mean every card in Wallet can be tapped automatically. It applies to the selected eligible item. If the wrong card is selected, the reader may charge a different account than you expected, so verify the setting before traveling.

- Bring the iPhone or Apple Watch with the selected Wallet credential to a Charlie reader.
- Hold the device near the contactless reader until it registers the tap.
- Use the same payment method for your trips whenever possible.
- Review the resulting charge through the payment account or Charlie account tools if you need a record.
MBTA specifically advises using the same payment method each time so charges are handled correctly. Switching between a physical card, an iPhone card, and an Apple Watch card can create separate credentials even when they draw from the same underlying bank account. For reliable fare accounting, choose one credential for the trip pattern you are tracking.
How to view account history and manage a credential
The newer Charlie site provides management for an unregistered Charlie Card and includes a selector for a Charlie Card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. If you pay with a numberless credit or debit credential, the account page says the transit identifier appears on the statement after MBTA* and begins with 55. That identifier can help you match a Wallet payment to the account record.
The legacy MyCharlie site currently manages standard CharlieCards. Its guidance directs people who manage contactless payments to the Charlie site instead. Use the site that matches the credential you actually tapped; a standard plastic-card account and a Wallet contactless credential are not interchangeable records.
Can I add my CharlieCard to Apple Wallet?
MBTA’s instructions mention adding a Charlie Card to Wallet, but the Charlie landing page describes a staged system rollout in which some features remain in testing. The material available here does not establish that every rider can currently add a mobile Charlie Card, nor does it give a final public fee or release schedule for a new mobile card.

If the Charlie setup appears in your account, follow the current MBTA prompts and read the fee and eligibility terms shown there. If it does not appear, you can still use the documented contactless bank-card method by adding a debit or credit card to Apple Wallet. Do not treat the presence of Express Mode as proof that a bank card has become a Charlie stored-value card.
Can I use reduced fares with Apple Pay?
Potentially, but adding a card to Wallet does not automatically apply a reduced fare. MBTA says riders enrolled in reduced-fare programs can link benefits to a contactless credit or debit card, phone, or watch. The intended credential must be linked through the Charlie system, and the program rules still apply.
Programs and discounts
MBTA’s reduced-fare information covers blind, disability, income-eligible, and senior categories. It also identifies categories that ride free without an application. The TAP program describes approximately 50% off one-way fares and passes for most modes, excluding The RIDE. The senior program describes approximately 50% off one-way fares and passes, including The RIDE.
Those descriptions do not mean every program uses the same enrollment process or that any Wallet card is automatically interchangeable with another. Confirm your eligibility, enroll if required, and link the exact phone, watch, or contactless card you will tap. If you change the selected Wallet card later, verify whether the benefit follows that credential before relying on a discount.

Choosing the right payment method
Use a Wallet bank card when
- You want the simplest documented setup and are comfortable paying per ride from a debit or credit account.
- You want to tap an iPhone or Apple Watch instead of carrying the physical card.
- You do not need a Charlie stored-value balance or a special transit-card feature.
Use a Charlie credential when
- Your account offers the relevant Charlie Wallet feature during the staged rollout.
- You need a Charlie-specific account or benefit arrangement.
- You have confirmed the current fee, eligibility, and management steps shown by MBTA.
For reduced-fare riders, the decisive issue is not whether the card is in Apple Wallet; it is whether the eligible benefit is linked to the exact contactless credential being tapped.

Troubleshooting common problems
The reader does not respond
- Confirm that the card is fully added and verified in Wallet.
- Hold the correct part of the iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader and wait for the tap response.
- Check that Express Mode is enabled for the card you intended to use.
- If the device has multiple cards, verify which one is selected for transit.
The wrong account was charged
Review the selected Express Mode card on the device that made the tap. The iPhone and Apple Watch can have different selected cards. For future trips, keep one payment credential selected and follow MBTA’s advice to use the same method consistently.
A reduced fare did not apply
Do not assume Wallet automatically recognized your status. Confirm that your reduced-fare benefit is active and linked to the specific card, phone, or watch credential you tapped. If your program includes restrictions—such as the TAP description excluding The RIDE—check the mode and fare rules before traveling.
You cannot find a mobile Charlie Card option
That may reflect the staged rollout rather than a Wallet failure. The current instructions do not promise universal access. Continue with contactless bank-card payment if that is available to you, and use the Charlie account tools for the credential type they support.
Bottom line for MBTA riders
For a straightforward Apple Wallet trip, add a debit or credit card, select it for Express Mode, and tap the iPhone or Apple Watch at the Charlie reader. You normally will not need to unlock or authenticate the device. Keep the selected credential consistent, and separately verify any Charlie account or reduced-fare linkage. A Charlie Card in Wallet is a different feature whose availability and fee remain dependent on MBTA’s staged rollout.
