Mauritania’s Tiris is a development project, not an operating uranium mine. Its reported resource and planned output are significant, but they are not equivalent to Namibia’s production from established operations or to a mine already under construction. The clearest comparison is by project stage: Tiris is advancing through engineering and permitting toward a company-targeted final investment decision, while Namibia has producing mines as well as projects moving toward development, and Tanzania’s Mkuju River remains short of full-scale mine construction.

How the projects compare at a glance

Project or context Operating and development stage Ownership or participation Reported scale Key next steps or constraints
Tiris, Mauritania Development project; not producing in Aura Energy’s FY2026 annual report Aura reports 85% ownership through Tiris Ressources SA and 15% for the Mauritanian government 91.3 million lb U3O8 mineral resource, estimate dated June 2024; 33.6 million lb U3O8 ore reserve, estimate dated December 2024 Aura targets FID by end-2026, construction in 2027 and first production around the start of 2029; these remain company targets
Namibia’s operating uranium mines Established uranium producer; Langer Heinrich resumed production in 2024 Not stated for the country-wide production context OECD-NEA’s 2025 report documents production using historical data; it should not be read as a 2026 output figure Actual production provides a more mature comparison than an undeveloped resource, but country-wide output is not a direct measure of an individual project’s size
Etango, Namibia Development project; its retention licence was converted to a mining licence on 31 October 2023, and Bannerman’s June 2026 report describes early works and a financing transaction progressing Not stated in the cited status information Not stated in the cited status information A mining licence, early works and financing progress are separate milestones; none alone establishes commercial production
Mkuju River, Tanzania Not producing in the Ministry of Minerals’ 13 May 2026 update; a pilot processing plant was inaugurated in July 2025 Mantra was pursuing financing for full-scale development in the ministry update Not stated in the cited status information The ministry said the mining licence was expected to expire in April 2028; pilot processing is not commercial mine production

Sources for the table are Aura Energy’s Annual Report 2026; the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s Uranium 2024: Resources, Production and Demand, published in 2025; the Namibian Uranium Association’s account of uranium mining in Namibia, accessed 5 October 2026; Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism environmental register; Bannerman Energy’s June 2026 quarterly activities report; and Tanzania’s Ministry of Minerals update dated 13 May 2026.

What Tiris’ resource and reserve figures mean

Aura Energy reports a Tiris mineral resource of 91.3 million pounds (Mlb) of U3O8, with an estimate date of June 2024, and an ore reserve of 33.6 Mlb of U3O8, with an estimate date of December 2024. The reserve is reported as 62.8 million tonnes at 243 parts per million U3O8. Aura says neither estimate changed during FY2026.

These figures describe different categories, not two competing estimates of the same thing. A mineral resource is an estimate of mineralisation; it does not automatically establish that all of it can be mined economically. An ore reserve is the portion reported as economically mineable under the assumptions used for the estimate. The two numbers therefore should not be added together or compared as though they mean the same thing. The cited report provides the dates and figures above; the estimate standard is not stated in the available project facts.

The Investment Promotion Agency of Mauritania also publishes a 100 Mlb uranium figure on an undated mining overview page, but gives no estimate date, classification or project allocation. It cannot be treated as an independently classified national resource or substituted for Tiris’ project-level figures.

What Aura’s Tiris schedule does—and does not—establish

Aura describes Tiris as a shallow open-pit project using alkaline leaching, designed for a targeted initial production rate of 2 Mlb of U3O8 per year. That is a design target, not current output. The company’s FY2026 report sets out FID by the end of 2026, construction during 2027 and first production around the start of 2029 as targets. None of those milestones should be described as completed on the basis of that report.

The U.S. International Trade Administration’s Mauritania country guide, last published 10 February 2026, describes Tiris as progressing through permitting and engineering. That context helps explain why a large reported resource does not yet make Mauritania a producing uranium country: project development still has to move through the decisions and work required before a mine can operate.

Why Namibia is the more mature production comparison

Namibia offers two different comparisons. First, it has established uranium production: the OECD-NEA’s 2025 report documents the country’s production history, while the Namibian Uranium Association reports that Langer Heinrich resumed production in 2024. These sources establish a producing sector, not a specific 2026 national production total. Historical production figures in the OECD-NEA report should retain their stated data years rather than be presented as current output.

Second, Namibia has projects still in development. Etango’s retention licence became a mining licence on 31 October 2023, according to the country’s environmental register. Bannerman’s June 2026 report describes early works and a strategic financing transaction progressing. Those steps place Etango at a different point from an operating mine, and they illustrate why licence conversion, financing, early works, construction and production should not be collapsed into one label such as “under development.”

Namibia is therefore useful both as a producing-country benchmark and as a source of development-stage examples. Neither comparison makes Tiris’ resource directly comparable to Namibian production: a project resource is an estimated inventory, while production measures material produced over a specified period.

Where Tanzania’s Mkuju River project stands

In its 13 May 2026 update, Tanzania’s Ministry of Minerals said Mantra was still seeking capital for construction of a full mine and processing plant. A pilot processing plant had been inaugurated in July 2025, but pilot work is not the same as commercial production or completion of a full-scale plant. The ministry also said the mining licence was expected to expire in April 2028.

Mkuju River is thus a useful contrast with Tiris because both are development-stage projects, but the milestones reported for them differ. Aura has published a target FID and a target first-production period for Tiris; the Tanzanian ministry’s account emphasizes the need to secure financing for Mkuju River’s full-scale construction. Those statements describe reported plans and constraints, not certainty that either project will meet a schedule.

What can be said about the wider African pipeline

The OECD-NEA’s 2025 edition provides continental context, listing producing, idled and development-stage projects in Namibia, Malawi, Niger, Tanzania, Mauritania, Botswana, Mali and Zambia. Its project descriptions draw on reporting vintages that may predate the more recent Namibia and Tanzania updates cited here. It is useful for showing that uranium activity spans multiple African countries and project stages, but not as proof of every project’s status in 2026.

This comparison is illustrative rather than exhaustive. For current milestones, the dated government and company updates for particular projects are more informative than treating a country list or an older production table as a live status register.

How to read claims about African uranium projects

  • Check the stage first. Separate producing mines from projects with licences, pilot facilities, early works, financing activity or future production targets.
  • Keep the metric attached to its meaning. A resource or reserve is not annual production; planned annual output is not actual output.
  • Keep dates with estimates and production figures. Tiris’ reported resource and reserve estimates have different dates, and historical national production data should retain its original year.
  • Distinguish company plans from completed milestones. FID, construction and first production dates in a company schedule remain targets until achieved.
  • Use the right source for the claim. Company reports provide project estimates and schedules, government records establish administrative milestones, and sector or intergovernmental reports offer broader production context.
