In FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, linked equipment slots let a compatible Support materia change or extend the effect of the materia in its connected slot. Pair Elemental with elemental magic to add that element to weapon attacks or gain elemental defense from armor; pair Magnify with compatible magic to affect multiple valid targets, with reduced effect while expanded. The result depends on the pairing, the equipment location, and the materia’s level.
What linked slots do
Materia goes into slots on weapons and armor, where it gives a character access to abilities such as magic and summons. Some slots appear as a connected pair. That connection matters: when you put a compatible Support materia in one slot and the materia it modifies in the other, the Support materia’s paired effect applies.
A materia fitting into an equipment slot does not, by itself, mean it is working with another materia. For a linked combination, the two slots must be connected, and the Support materia must be compatible with its partner. Support materia is not a universal modifier that works with every orb. The particular effect depends on which Support materia you use.

Think of the pair as a relationship between two slots, not simply two materia equipped on the same character. If the materia are in separate, unconnected slots, the Support effect does not apply to the other materia through a link. Check the equipment layout as well as the materia names when setting up a combination.

How to link materia

Open the Materia & Equipment menu after it becomes available during story progression. Square Enix notes that access unlocks after reaching certain points in the game, so it may not be available immediately.

Choose a weapon or armor with a connected slot pair. The connection is the visual cue that the two slots can form a link.

Place a Support materia in one slot and a compatible materia in its connected partner. For example, pair Elemental with an elemental magic materia, or pair Magnify with compatible magic.

Choose the equipment position to suit the effect. Elemental on a weapon adds the linked element to attacks; Elemental on armor provides defense against that element.

Consider the materia’s level and what you need it to do. Elemental’s offensive or defensive effect changes as it levels. Magnify broadens a spell’s coverage but reduces its effect while expanded; its level affects that trade-off.
If the combination does not appear to work as intended, first confirm that the slots are connected and that the Support materia is paired with a compatible type of materia. Then check whether Elemental is in the weapon or armor position that matches your goal, and whether the spell used with Magnify can affect the targets you have in mind.

Elemental: offense on a weapon, defense on armor
Elemental is a clear example of why the equipment location matters. Link it to an elemental magic materia and the linked element is applied differently depending on whether the pair is in a weapon or armor. On a weapon, it adds that element to attacks. On armor, it provides defense against that element. The official game overview describes this weapon-versus-armor distinction.

Using Elemental in a weapon
For an offensive setup, put the Elemental pair in a weapon’s connected slots. The character’s attacks then gain the element represented by the linked magic materia. This is not the same as simply equipping the magic materia to cast its spell: the link changes the weapon’s attacks by applying the element.
Whether that setup is useful in a particular encounter depends on the enemy’s elemental matchup. The pairing establishes the element, but it does not make every enemy equally vulnerable to it. Choose the element with the battle in mind rather than treating Elemental as a general damage increase.
Using Elemental in armor
For defense, place the linked pair in armor instead. The armor receives protection against the linked element. This gives Elemental a different job from its weapon use: the linked element is defensive rather than added to attacks.
The strength of Elemental’s effect depends on its level. The GameFAQs guide for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE describes increasing weapon damage and armor protection at higher levels, including immunity and absorption at higher levels. Those outcomes are level-dependent; do not assume a newly acquired or lower-level Elemental provides the strongest protection or the same result as a more developed one. The guide’s progression is specific to Remake, not a general rule for every game in the series.
Magnify: broaden a spell’s target coverage
Magnify links to compatible magic and expands that magic to multiple applicable targets. It can make healing magic cover more than one party member, or let attack magic reach a broader set of valid targets. Its purpose is wider coverage, not a universal increase in damage or healing.

There is a trade-off: the GameFAQs guide reports that magic used while expanded has reduced power, and that the penalty decreases as Magnify gains levels. When deciding whether to use it, weigh the value of reaching more targets against the reduced effect. A spell directed at multiple targets may be more useful overall in a situation where broad coverage matters, but Magnify does not simply make each target receive a stronger spell.
Choose based on the spell and the targets
For party healing, Magnify can extend a compatible healing spell across multiple applicable allies. For offensive magic, it can widen coverage across valid enemies. The number and type of targets depend on what the spell can affect; linking Magnify does not make every spell capable of reaching every target.
Use the pairing when coverage is more valuable than concentrating the spell’s full effect on a narrower target set. If the spell’s power matters more than reaching multiple targets, the reduced effect while expanded may make a non-expanded use preferable. As Magnify levels up, the reduction becomes smaller according to the guide, so the balance changes with its level.

These two Support materia solve different problems. Elemental changes the elemental character of a weapon’s attacks or grants elemental protection through armor. Magnify changes the target coverage of compatible magic and accepts a reduction in effect while that magic is expanded.

The table describes the two examples covered here, not an exhaustive compatibility chart for every Support materia and every other materia. Compatibility is specific to the Support materia, so do not infer that any two materia can be linked just because the slots connect.
Common setup mistakes and how to check them

The materia are equipped but not linked. Two materia on the same weapon or armor do not automatically interact. Confirm that they occupy the connected pair, rather than separate slots.

The pair is incompatible. A Support materia needs a compatible partner. If the expected paired effect is absent, check the type of materia in the partner slot instead of assuming every blue Support materia works with it.

Elemental is in the wrong equipment position for the goal. A weapon setup adds the linked element to attacks; an armor setup provides defense. Move the pair to the equipment type that fits the intended role.

The expected effect assumes a higher level. Elemental’s damage and protection vary by level, and the guide places immunity and absorption at higher levels. Magnify’s reduction in effect while expanded also lessens as it levels. Check the current materia level before assuming the strongest outcome.

Magnify is being treated as a damage boost. Its role is broader target coverage. The expanded spell has reduced power, so consider the number and type of valid targets and whether reaching them is worth the reduction.

The menu has not unlocked yet. If Materia & Equipment is not available early in the game, that may reflect story progression rather than a problem with the save or equipment. Square Enix says the menu unlocks after certain in-game progress.

This guide covers FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE. Its linked-slot examples and level-dependent descriptions should not be silently applied to the original FINAL FANTASY VII or to FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. Those are distinct games, and this explanation does not establish that their materia systems behave identically.

Square Enix’s system overview supports the basic equipment and Elemental mechanics: materia equips to weapons and armor, and a linked Elemental combination applies its element differently to each. The more detailed level behavior and Magnify trade-off described above come from the GameFAQs guide for Remake. Use those details within that game’s context rather than as a claim about the whole series.
