Marvel Zombies is an animated offshoot of What If…? that expands one of the series’ alternate MCU realities. That makes it part of the Multiverse Saga’s broader multiverse storytelling, but Marvel and Disney’s official materials do not assign it a numbered phase or state a precise in-universe year.
Where Marvel Zombies fits in the MCU
The clearest way to place Marvel Zombies is by its connection to What If…?, not by trying to slot it between two live-action films. Disney describes the four-part animated event series as expanding the dystopian world first seen in What If…?. Marvel’s account of its 2022 animation panel says the project grew out of a Season 1 episode of that series. Those statements establish a direct narrative lineage and an alternate-reality premise; they do not establish a place in the main MCU timeline.
Marvel uses “the Multiverse Saga” for MCU Phases 4, 5, and 6 in its September 10, 2022 D23 announcement report. What If…? is described on Marvel’s official series page as an animated reimagining of MCU film events that opens up multiverse possibilities. Because Marvel Zombies continues a world introduced in that multiverse-focused series, it belongs in the Multiverse Saga’s broad storytelling context.
That is a contextual answer, not a formal phase designation. The official materials cited here do not label Marvel Zombies a Phase 4, Phase 5, or Phase 6 installment. The saga label and the series’ multiverse connection are evidence of its broad franchise setting, not proof of a specific phase slot.

What its connection to What If…? means
What If…? takes familiar MCU events and explores how events could unfold differently. Marvel’s 2022 animation-panel report says Marvel Zombies originated from a Season 1 story in that series. Disney’s description likewise says the newer series expands the dystopian world first seen there. The connection is therefore more specific than simply sharing an animated format or a franchise name: the zombie setting has a stated origin in What If…?.
Disney+ summarizes the premise as survivors confronting a zombie plague after the Avengers are overtaken, and lists the show as a 2025 series. This identifies the central setup, but a premise summary is not a chronology. It does not say which year the events occur, how much time has passed since the originating episode, or where the story sits relative to other MCU projects.

Disney identifies Bryan Andrews as director, writer, and executive producer in its behind-the-scenes article. The same article calls it a four-part event series and describes it as an expansion of the What If…? world. Its format and creative credits help distinguish it as a focused animated story, but neither format nor production credit supplies a numbered phase placement.
Does Marvel Zombies have a place in the MCU timeline?
Not one that the official sources reviewed here specify. The material establishes that the series occupies an alternate-reality setting connected to What If…?; it does not provide an in-universe calendar year or a definitive position among the main-timeline MCU events. Treating it as though it were a main-timeline event that happens before or after a particular film would go beyond what those sources say.

For a practical viewing order, the supported starting point is the relevant zombie story in What If…? Season 1, followed by Marvel Zombies. That order follows the documented creative and story connection. It should not be mistaken for an official chronological sequence across every MCU project: no exact date or complete continuity order is supplied in the cited descriptions.
The official Disney+ listing identifies Marvel Zombies as a 2025 title. That is its listing year, not evidence of the story’s in-universe year. Release or catalog placement and fictional chronology are different kinds of information.

Is the animated series set on Earth-2149?
The available evidence does not establish that. Marvel has a separate Marvel Zombies (Earth-2149) page for comics material. That page is not proof that the animated series takes place on the same numbered Earth. The show’s official descriptions connect it to the alternate world introduced in What If…?; they do not give that world an Earth designation.

This distinction matters because “Marvel Zombies” can refer to more than one work or continuity. A comic-book reference and an animated MCU offshoot may share a zombie concept without sharing a specific universe designation or storyline. Unless an official source identifies the series’ reality as Earth-2149, that label should be treated as unconfirmed for the show.

A precise short description is: Marvel Zombies is a four-part animated expansion of the alternate reality introduced in What If…? Season 1, and it fits the Multiverse Saga’s broad multiverse context. Its official phase number and exact in-universe chronology have not been stated in the sources cited here.
Marvel’s 2022 animation-panel coverage also quotes executive producer Brad Winderbaum saying, “We are not shying away from the things that made the comic book great,” in reference to the series’ horror approach. That supports describing the project as horror-oriented, but it does not turn the show into a direct adaptation of a particular comic continuity. The continuity connection that is explicitly identified is the one to What If…?.
