A market correction is commonly a decline of about 10% from a recent high; a bear market commonly means a decline of 20% or more, sometimes subject to a duration rule; and a crash describes a sudden, severe drop without a universally agreed percentage trigger. These are market-label conventions, not formal diagnoses of the economy or reliable forecasts of what prices will do next.
What is a stock market correction, and how does one work?
A correction is commonly described as a fall of around 10% from a recent market high. Fidelity notes that there is no official definition and describes the common convention as a drop of at least 10%. Morningstar uses a narrower band: greater than 10% but less than 20%. Because the boundary wording differs, it is more accurate to say a decline is “commonly described as a correction” than to present one percentage rule as universal.
The percentage is measured from a reference peak, not from the price at which an individual investor bought. To calculate a decline, subtract the current level from the peak, divide the difference by the peak, and multiply by 100. For example, if an index stood at 1,000 and later fell to 900, the decline from that peak is 10%. This arithmetic describes the move; it does not settle which label every source would apply at the boundary.

The term alone does not tell you whether investors are reacting to economic news, changing expectations, or other information. Nor does it guarantee that prices will recover quickly, that the decline has reached its low, or that it will stop before reaching bear-market territory.

What does a bear market mean?
A bear market commonly refers to a decline of at least 20% from a recent high. The duration condition is not uniform across educational definitions. Investor.gov says, “Generally, a bear market occurs when a broad market index falls by 20% or more over at least a two-month period.” Other investor-education sources use the 20% decline convention without specifying that two-month minimum.
That difference matters when describing a fast decline. Under Investor.gov’s general glossary wording, the 20% threshold by itself would not establish the described bear-market condition unless the fall also spans at least two months. Under a definition without a duration rule, the percentage threshold may be enough. When precision matters, state the convention being used rather than assuming every source applies the same test.
A bear-market label also depends on what is being measured. It may describe a broad market index or a particular asset, but a fall in one investment does not establish that the whole market has entered a bear market. Name the index or asset, identify the peak used as the reference point, and give the period over which the decline occurred. Without those details, a percentage can be difficult to interpret.

What makes a crash different?
“Crash” emphasizes speed and severity: it describes a sudden, extreme decline over a single day or a very short period. The sources considered here do not establish a universal percentage threshold for a crash. Treating a particular number as its official trigger would therefore overstate what the term means.
The labels can describe different aspects of the same market move. “Crash” says something about how abruptly and severely prices fell; a correction or bear-market label refers to the size of the decline from a recent high, with bear-market definitions sometimes adding a duration condition. A sharp fall could be described as a crash and also meet a percentage convention used for a correction or bear market. The terms are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
Conversely, a decline that reaches a commonly used threshold does not automatically sound like a crash: the word usually conveys an unusually sudden move. Since there is no fixed crash threshold in the cited descriptions, readers should look at the actual price path and time period rather than infer a specific percentage from the word alone.

Correction vs. bear market vs. crash

The comparison is useful only when the object and reference point are clear. “The market is down 10%” leaves open which market, which peak, and whether the figure is measured intraday, at a close, or over a broader period. A careful description might identify the index or asset, its recent high, the current level, and the dates covered. That gives the reader enough context to understand the arithmetic without implying that a label is universally settled.
Why the definitions do not form a perfect ladder
It is tempting to treat corrections, bear markets, and crashes as three official stages that every decline passes through. That is not what the definitions support. Correction and bear-market thresholds are conventions, and sources differ about their precise boundaries and duration rules. “Crash” is a qualitative description of a sudden, severe move rather than a category with a shared numeric trigger.
The labels can also answer separate questions. A percentage comparison asks how far prices have fallen from a peak. A duration rule asks how long a condition has persisted. “Crash” conveys how abruptly the decline occurred. Since these measures are not identical, one event may fit more than one description, while another may satisfy one convention and not another.

For example, suppose a broad index declines 21% over a period shorter than two months. The percentage meets a commonly used 20% bear-market threshold, but it does not meet Investor.gov’s stated two-month condition. If the fall happened very rapidly, a writer might also use “crash” descriptively, but the percentage alone cannot establish that label. Naming the definition avoids turning a difference in convention into an apparent disagreement about the market data.
Likewise, an asset down 11% from its own peak may fit Fidelity’s correction convention, while Morningstar’s stated range begins above 10% and ends below 20%. That does not mean one source has discovered a different price move; it reflects different wording at the boundary. Avoid false precision when a category is based on conventions rather than a binding standard.

Does a bear market mean the economy is in recession?
No. A bear-market label describes market prices under a chosen decline convention; it is not proof that a recession is occurring. Market prices reflect investors’ expectations and reactions to information, so they can diverge from current economic conditions. A market decline may accompany concern about the economy, but the label alone cannot establish the state of the broader economy.

This distinction is important because a market index and the economy are not the same measurement. The index tracks the prices of the investments included in it; it does not directly report every measure of economic activity. To make a claim about a recession, one would need evidence relevant to the economy, not simply a market label. The term “bear market” should not be used as shorthand for “recession.”
How to interpret a market-downturn headline
- Find the thing being measured. Check whether the statement refers to a broad index, a sector index, or an individual investment. A decline in one asset should not be generalized to the whole market.
- Check the reference peak. A percentage decline is relative to a high point. Look for the date or level used as the starting point; otherwise, a quoted percentage is incomplete.
- Separate the percentage from the label. Calculate or verify the drop from the stated peak, then compare it with the convention being used. Around 10% is commonly associated with a correction, and 20% or more with a bear market, but exact wording and duration requirements vary.
- Look at the time span. A sudden move over a day or very short period may support the descriptive word “crash.” For a bear-market claim using Investor.gov’s general definition, check whether the decline has lasted at least two months.
- Read economic claims separately. If a headline moves from a market decline to a conclusion about recession, identify the additional economic evidence it relies on. The market label itself does not prove that conclusion.
This checklist helps separate observable facts—the asset, peak, current level, and time span—from the convention chosen to name them. It also prevents an alarming word from doing more work than the underlying figures support.
What these labels can and cannot tell an investor
The labels can summarize a price decline in familiar terms, provided the reference and definition are stated. They can help a reader compare descriptions of a market move and notice whether the conversation is about its size, duration, or speed. They do not, on their own, identify a bottom, predict a recovery, explain why the market moved, or tell an individual investor what action to take.

No historical frequency, average loss, or average duration comparison is offered here because the available definitions do not supply a consistent dataset for all three labels. In particular, comparing averages would require matching the source’s rules for what counts as a correction, bear market, or crash. Figures based on inconsistent definitions could appear precise while measuring different things.
For a useful, restrained description, report the market or asset, the peak and comparison date, the decline percentage, and the definition behind any label. Use “commonly,” “generally,” or “often” for the percentage conventions. Describe a crash in terms of the observed speed and severity rather than assigning it an unsupported universal trigger, and do not infer a recession from a downturn label alone.
