Mario Kart World online events are scheduled activities with event-specific rules, modes, dates and sometimes an Event ID. Their published leaderboards show results for that event; they should not be treated as a universal display of your regular online rating. Nintendo’s official materials describe some changes to rating behavior, but do not provide the complete formula for ordinary online ratings.

What an online event is—and what its ranking means

An online event is a time-limited activity announced by Nintendo. Its announcement or terms determine when it runs, which modes it uses, how to enter, who can participate and whether it awards a reward. Some events use an in-game Event ID; others may have a different entry method. The instructions for one campaign are not a standing rule for all future events.

A leaderboard is the event’s published result display. It may show placements and scores, and it may organize results in more than one view. A position or score on that page describes the results shown for that event, not necessarily a persistent rating used for matchmaking across the game. Do not assume that an event score converts to, or is calculated like, a regular online rating unless the event terms explicitly say so.

Two kinds of numbers to keep separate

  • Event results: standings or scores published for a particular competition, campaign, region, mode or character view.
  • Regular online rates: values associated with the game’s ordinary online modes. Nintendo’s update notes confirm that these can fluctuate, but the official materials covered here do not give a complete calculation formula, thresholds or point schedule.

This distinction matters when reading a leaderboard: a high displayed event score establishes what the event page reports. By itself, it does not reveal how the game calculates an ordinary rating, how much a particular finish changes that rating or how the event score relates to an in-game rate.

What you need before joining

Nintendo’s March 2026 My Nintendo Open Series instructions specified four participation prerequisites: Mario Kart World, a Nintendo Account, an internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo also says an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for the game’s online features. A copy of the game alone is therefore not enough to participate online.

  • Game: Mario Kart World for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Account: A Nintendo Account, as required by the cited Open Series.
  • Connection: Internet access.
  • Online service: Nintendo Switch Online for online features.
  • Current software: Apply the game update required for Internet features. Nintendo’s version 1.8.0 notes, released September 9, 2026, say the update must be applied to use those features.

A particular event can add eligibility restrictions, geographic limits, entry codes, dates or other requirements. Read that event’s current announcement and terms rather than carrying over the conditions of an older campaign. A controller choice is not an additional eligibility condition established by the cited Open Series instructions.

How to enter an event with an Event ID

The March 2026 My Nintendo Open Series provides a concrete example of Nintendo’s Event ID flow. For that campaign, players used the following in-game route while the relevant event was active:

  4. Select the matching event from the list while it is active.

Nintendo said players could enter an ID before the event began to practice under the same rules. That was a practice option for this series; it does not mean that entering an ID early registers a score, guarantees participation in a later event or applies to every event.

Historical IDs from the March 2026 Open Series

Event Mode Event ID
MAR10 Day VS Race VS Race 3101
MAR10 Day Coin Runners Coin Runners 3102
MAR10 Day Knockout Tour Knockout Tour 3103

The three-week series was announced for the Americas, with a separate Event ID and gameplay focus for each week. These IDs and modes belong to that 2026 campaign; they are not general-purpose codes and should not be expected to work for a later event. Check Nintendo’s announcement for the event you intend to join to confirm its active period, region and current entry details.

Nintendo said participants could take part solo or with friends. Its announcement also offered 310 My Nintendo Platinum Points for participation in any one of the three events, available to claim on or about April 1, 2026 (Pacific Time). That reward and claim timing were specific to the March series, not a recurring benefit of entering Mario Kart World events.

How to read Nintendo’s event rankings

Look first at the page title and event identity, then at the ranking view and the score column. Nintendo’s September 2026 Mario Kart World Open results page provides a Top 100 view and a separate Top Per Character view. It displays racer names and scores; the first entry shown in the Top 100 had a score of 9,886. That number is an example of a score displayed on that event’s results page, not a general game-wide rating or a score target for other events.

The character view answers a narrower question than the overall list: who leads in the view organized by character. A placement there should be interpreted within that view, rather than as proof of a player’s overall standing across every mode or event. Likewise, a Top 100 page reports the listed leading racers; it does not establish the total number of participants.

Nintendo of Canada’s July 2026 results announcement described its published list as the best-rated 100 racers and included placements, drivers and scores. It is a historical results snapshot for that announcement. Its list size is not an estimate of all entrants, and the results announcement does not explain the algorithm behind the ratings or promise when the next event will run.

Questions the leaderboard does—and does not—answer

  • It can answer: which names, placements and scores Nintendo published for that event and ranking view.
  • It does not necessarily answer: how the score was calculated, whether it maps to a regular online rate, what every finish is worth, or how many total players entered.
  • It cannot predict: the rules, Event ID, reward or schedule of a future event.

For those details, use the specific event announcement or terms. A results page is evidence of the displayed result, not a substitute for the event’s scoring rules.

Why event scores can differ from regular online ratings

Nintendo of Europe’s November Knockout contest is a clear example of a separate contest scoring system. The private, code-entry event was held on November 29, 2025, in participating European countries. Its terms allowed participants to take part in up to 16 Knockout Tours during the event period and ranked them by contest scores. Each completed race awarded a set number of points based on finishing position.

Nintendo of Europe explicitly distinguished those contest scores from the scores used in regular VS Race, Knockout Tour and Battle online modes. In practical terms, a player could use that event’s published standings to understand their contest result, but should not read its placement-based contest points as the ordinary rating change for a race in those modes.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

The contest is an example, not a universal scoring template. It does not establish that every scheduled event awards points by finishing position, uses the same number of races, or ranks participants the same way. For a particular competition, its own terms control the region, schedule, number of races, scoring and reward conditions.

What version 1.8.0 changes—and what it does not explain

Nintendo lists Mario Kart World software update version 1.8.0 as released September 9, 2026. In addition to requiring the update for Internet features, its notes document changes affecting event practice score displays, spectator ranking displays and online rankings after checkpoints. These details matter if a displayed result looks inconsistent: a display correction or software issue is different from a change to the event’s published scoring rules.

The notes also say that the amount of rate fluctuation in races now varies according to course length. For Battle results with tied scores, Nintendo changed the method used to calculate rates. These are concrete signs that rate behavior can depend on mode or conditions and can change with software updates.

They are not a full rating specification. The cited official notes do not provide a complete ordinary-rating algorithm, placement-by-placement point changes, thresholds or a mapping between event leaderboard scores and persistent online rates. Avoid calculating an expected rate change from a single leaderboard result or from the separate European contest’s points.

If a displayed ranking looks wrong

  1. Confirm that the game has the required current update applied, particularly version 1.8.0 or later as applicable to the online feature.
  2. Check that you are looking at the correct event and ranking view, such as Top 100 versus Top Per Character.
  3. Distinguish a display or ranking correction mentioned in update notes from a scoring rule stated in an event’s terms.
  4. Use the event announcement and terms for the applicable result period; do not infer a correction or rate formula from a different event’s list.

How to check an event before you enter

Because event IDs and formats are time-bound, a reliable check is more useful than reusing details from a past campaign. Before entering, confirm the following in Nintendo’s current event announcement or terms:

  • Dates and time zone: verify when entry opens and closes, and whether the displayed times are local or tied to a stated zone.
  • Region and eligibility: confirm that the event is available in your country and that you meet its participation conditions.
  • Mode and entry method: check whether it uses an Event ID through Find Event, a private code or another stated route.
  • Scoring and rankings: find out what earns points, what standings will be published and whether the contest uses its own scoring system.
  • Rewards: check the eligible action, claim process and timing; do not assume a past reward repeats.
  • Software requirements: apply the update Nintendo requires for Internet features and review any event-specific instructions.

Nintendo’s September 2026 results page and its July 2026 Canada announcement point readers toward Nintendo’s official event information and social accounts for future announcements. They do not establish a schedule for the next event, so a previous campaign’s timing should not be used to forecast one.
