Margin interest is the cost of borrowing from your brokerage firm. It generally accrues each day on an interest-bearing debit balance, using the applicable annual rate and the broker’s calculation method, then is posted to the account periodically—often monthly. The exact balance, rate, day-count basis, settlement timing, and billing date are set by your broker’s agreement and rate schedule, so there is no single formula or charge date that applies to every account.

What margin interest is—and what balance it applies to

A margin account lets a brokerage firm lend you money secured by assets in the account. If a purchase or other activity leaves an amount you owe the firm, that debit can incur interest. FINRA explains the basic mechanism: “The shortfall between the purchase price and the amount of money you put in is a loan from the brokerage firm, and you will incur interest costs, just as with any other loan.”

You do not necessarily have to make a deliberate choice labeled “borrow” for a debit to arise. A purchase can exceed available funds, or a withdrawal, trade settlement, options activity, or internal transfer can affect the account’s cash position. Whether that amount bears interest depends on the broker’s agreement and how it defines the relevant debit balance. A negative cash figure is a useful clue to investigate, but it may not by itself equal the balance used to calculate interest.

Margin interest is separate from the market performance of the securities you hold. It is a financing charge on the amount borrowed; it can accumulate even when a position’s value is unchanged or falling. The account agreement, margin rate schedule, and statement determine the terms that apply to your account.

How margin interest is calculated

A practical approximation for one day is:

Daily interest ≈ interest-bearing debit balance × annual margin rate ÷ day-count basis

For a period with a constant debit balance, a broker may express the calculation as:

Interest for the period ≈ average daily debit balance × (annual rate ÷ day-count basis) × number of days

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The balance may change from day to day, so the broker can calculate daily charges using each day’s applicable balance and add them together for the billing period. Do not assume the displayed cash balance, the trade value, or the amount originally borrowed is necessarily the exact interest-bearing balance: the broker’s definition and settlement rules control.

A published illustration, not a current rate quote

Webull gives an example using an average debit balance of $10,000 for 30 days at an annual rate of 8.74%, with a 360-day basis. The arithmetic is $10,000 × 0.0874 ÷ 360 × 30, or about $72.83. This is a broker’s illustration of its stated method, not a current offer, a forecast of what a particular account will pay, or a universal margin rate.

Why the day-count basis matters

In the reviewed examples, brokers use a 360-day denominator. Schwab describes its daily rate as the applicable annual rate divided by 360 and notes that this produces a higher effective annual cost than dividing by 365. For the same balance and stated annual rate, dividing by 360 allocates a larger daily charge than dividing by 365. Check the agreement rather than assuming the denominator from another firm’s example.

Variable rates and tiered balances

The annual rate may change, and it may depend on how much you borrow. Interactive Brokers describes a blended-rate approach: different portions of a loan can be charged at different tiers. In that arrangement, the rate on the first portion is not necessarily the rate applied to the entire debit. Compare the rate schedule at the loan size you expect to carry, and confirm the current thresholds and rates for your account and currency; those terms can change.

When interest starts, accrues, and appears in your account

Accrual and posting are different events. Interest can be calculated each day while the accumulated charge is debited from the account only once a month. A monthly posting date is not necessarily the date on which borrowing began or the only day interest accrued.

The firm-specific examples below show why a broker’s schedule should not be treated as an industry-wide calendar:

Broker example Calculation or timing described What to verify for your account
Webull Gives an average-daily-debit formula using an annual rate divided by 360. It says monthly charges are typically posted between the 15th and 18th. Under its described method, a position opened and closed on the same day does not incur margin interest. Current rate and agreement terms, the exact billing date, and whether the same-day example applies to your account activity.
Schwab Describes daily interest based on the daily adjusted debit balance and a daily rate equal to the annual rate divided by 360. It says interest begins accruing from the trade’s settlement date, identified in its explanation as T+1. It posts the monthly charge on the second-to-last business trading day of the month. How your adjusted debit is defined, the applicable settlement date, and the current posting schedule.
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) Describes rates blended across loan tiers and says actual interest is posted on the third business day of the following month. Applicable currency, current tiers and rates, and the posting calendar for your account.

These descriptions are examples from individual firms, not a shared rule. A broker may update its rates, dates, or calculation details. Use the current agreement, rate schedule, and account statement for the governing terms.

Settlement can affect the first interest-bearing day

Trade date and settlement date are not always interchangeable for interest calculations. Schwab says an order that creates a loan starts accruing interest as of settlement, which its explanation identifies as T+1. Webull’s description bases its closing debit balance on settlement of positions and says a position both opened and closed the same day does not incur interest under its method. Those examples do not establish how every broker treats every trade, product, or account event. If a charge begins earlier or later than you expected, ask the broker which date and balance it used.

Cash and sweep balances may not offset the debit automatically

A positive cash balance visible in one part of an account does not prove that it reduces a margin debit. The SEC’s investor bulletin advises customers to ask whether a firm nets cash-account and margin-account balances, whether account structure affects that netting, and how cash or money-market sweep balances are treated. The answer can depend on the broker’s rules and how your accounts are structured. Confirm it in the agreement or directly with the firm instead of assuming that all visible cash offsets borrowing.

Why a margin-interest charge may be unexpected

A charge can surprise an investor when the account’s displayed cash, the transaction they remember, and the broker’s interest-bearing balance do not appear to match. Work through the account records and terms rather than relying on one number in the interface.

  1. Find the debit shown for the relevant dates. Review the margin balance, cash activity, trade confirmations, and monthly statement. Identify purchases, withdrawals, option activity, and transfers that could have left or changed a debit.
  2. Check which balance the firm used. Look in the margin agreement or help materials for the definition of adjusted debit balance or other interest-bearing balance. Ask whether the balance is measured before or after settlement and how credits or cash are included.
  3. Match the charge to settlement timing. Compare the trade and settlement dates with the broker’s stated accrual rule. Do not assume that placing and closing a trade on the same calendar day prevents interest at every firm.
  4. Recalculate using the applicable rate and basis. Confirm the rate tier, any benchmark or base-rate relationship, the day-count denominator, and the number of days charged. If the balance or rate changed during the month, a single beginning- or end-of-month figure may not reproduce a daily calculation.
  5. Confirm the posting date and adjustments. A charge may appear after the days on which it accrued. Compare the statement period and posted amount with the broker’s monthly billing description, and ask whether an adjustment or unpaid amount is included.

When asking customer service, request the daily interest-bearing balance, annual rate used on each applicable date, day-count basis, accrual start date, and the calculation behind the posted charge. That turns a general explanation into figures you can check against the statement.

How to compare margin terms between brokers

A headline rate alone is not enough to compare the financing cost. The SEC investor bulletin says rates can vary substantially and recommends asking what the current rate is, whether it can vary, how changes are disclosed, how frequently interest accrues, and how to reduce the loan. Compare the full terms at the balance and account setup you expect to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rate at your likely debit: Compare the current annual rate for the amount you expect to borrow, not merely a minimum or introductory tier.
  • Rate structure: Determine whether the rate is fixed, benchmark-linked, or otherwise subject to change, and whether different portions of a balance receive different tier rates.
  • Balance and settlement rules: Ask what counts as the debit balance, when a trade-related loan begins accruing, and how withdrawals and other activity affect the calculation.
  • Day-count and daily calculation: Confirm the denominator and whether daily balances or another stated method are used.
  • Cash netting: Establish whether cash in another account or a sweep balance reduces the interest-bearing amount, and whether account structure changes the result.
  • Billing and unpaid amounts: Check when charges post, whether unpaid interest is treated as part of a later balance, and how the agreement describes compounding. Do not infer compounding rules from a monthly posting schedule.
  • Eligibility and minimums: Review account eligibility, any minimums, and the terms that apply to your currency and account type.

Rates and thresholds are volatile, so a comparison should use the firms’ current schedules, not an old example or a rate quoted for a different loan size. No single broker is best for every borrower; the cost depends on the rate tier and the account rules that apply to the balance you actually carry.

What to check in your agreement and statement

Before relying on a margin-cost estimate, locate the signed margin agreement, current rate schedule, and the statement showing the debit and posted interest. These documents answer different questions: the agreement defines the calculation and rights, the schedule supplies rates and tiers, and the statement records what the broker charged.

  • What is the current annual rate for my expected balance and currency?
  • Can the rate vary, how are changes communicated, and what rate applies if the base or benchmark changes?
  • What is the exact balance used for interest, and how do settlement, account structure, and sweep balances affect it?
  • What day-count basis is used, and on which date does a new debit begin accruing?
  • When are charges posted, and how are unpaid interest or adjustments treated?
  • What actions reduce the debit balance, and when does the broker recognize those payments or credits?

The SEC investor bulletin says that, in general, a firm must provide at least 30 days’ written notice of changes in its method of computing interest. That is a statement in SEC staff investor education; it is not a substitute for checking the governing account documents or asking how a particular change applies to your account.

Disclosure detail matters too. A FINRA BrokerCheck report concerning Axos Clearing recorded a historical finding that its margin agreement did not state the current base rate or explain how that rate related to a public rate, and did not disclose the introducing broker’s markup or otherwise ensure customers received it. That case is a reason to locate the actual rate schedule and any markup terms; it is not evidence that all brokerage firms have the same disclosure problem.
