Amazon says it deployed its one-millionth robot on June 30, 2025, and that more than one million robots operate in its fulfillment centers. Its 2024 Sustainability Report separately counted more than 1.5 million full- and part-time employees worldwide. Those figures describe different things: Amazon has not published a formal count of “active warehouse robots,” and the employee total does not establish a global employer ranking.
How many robots does Amazon have?
Amazon’s reported fleet has several related but distinct measures. In a June 30, 2025 announcement, the company said it had deployed its one-millionth robot to a fulfillment center in Japan, with its robotics network spanning more than 300 facilities. CEO Andy Jassy’s shareholder-letter excerpt said over one million robots were operating in fulfillment centers. These are company-reported deployment and operating figures, not an independently audited count or a formally defined measure of “active warehouse robots.” Amazon’s 2025 milestone announcement and Jassy’s letter excerpt use different wording, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Amazon later reported a different metric: in a September 24, 2026 announcement, it said it had manufactured more than one million robots in the United States and deployed them across more than 300 facilities globally. The company also said robots assist with 75% of customer orders delivered worldwide. “Assist” does not mean robots independently pick, pack, and deliver those orders; it describes orders that receive some form of robotic assistance, according to Amazon. Amazon’s 2026 announcement does not make the manufacturing total equivalent to an operating or deployed fleet count.

What do Amazon warehouse robots do?
Amazon describes robots as part of an internal industrial automation network that moves inventory and supports work inside fulfillment centers. In his shareholder letter, CEO Andy Jassy said robots help with stowing, picking, sorting, and transport within facilities. The systems do not all perform the same task: some move shelves or inventory, while others are designed to manipulate items.

Moving and consolidating inventory
Amazon describes Sequoia as a system for consolidating and moving inventory. Hercules and Titan are drive units used to move loads through facilities. The company’s descriptions focus on how these systems help move goods through its own operations, rather than on robots working as general-purpose machines outside that environment. Amazon’s overview of its robotics systems outlines these roles.
Picking and stowing items
Amazon says Vulcan combines sight and touch to help pick and stow items. Such systems address the physical handling of inventory, while other robots transport goods or support sorting. Amazon presents safety, productivity, and employee support as goals for its robotics work; those are company-stated aims, not independently measured outcomes in the cited materials.

Coordinating robot movement
DeepFleet is Amazon’s system for coordinating robot movements across its facilities. When Amazon announced it in June 2025, it claimed DeepFleet improved robot fleet travel time by 10%. That is a company-reported change in travel time, not evidence of a 10% increase in overall warehouse productivity. Amazon’s announcement of DeepFleet and the robot milestone gives the company’s figure.
Are Amazon’s robots replacing workers?
The cited figures do not establish how many jobs robots have replaced, whether automation has reduced total staffing, or how the technology has changed employment in particular roles. Amazon describes its systems as helping employees and handling tasks such as moving, sorting, picking, and stowing. That supports describing the robots as part of a human-operated fulfillment process, but it does not by itself quantify their effect on hiring, job losses, or working conditions.

The 75% figure Amazon reported in 2026 is specifically about customer orders receiving robotic assistance. It should not be read as meaning robots autonomously fulfill three quarters of orders or as a measure of workforce replacement.
How many people work for Amazon?
Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report stated that the company had more than 1.5 million full- and part-time employees around the globe. This is a dated company-reported workforce figure, not a current headcount for 2026. It also does not establish that Amazon is the world’s second-largest corporate employer: the cited report provides an employee total, not a verified ranking or the comparison set needed to support one. Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report is the source for the workforce figure.

How to read Amazon’s robotics claims
For a meaningful comparison over time, keep the metric and scope attached to each number. “Deployed,” “operating,” and “manufactured” describe different stages or populations; a facility count and an order-assistance share measure different things again. The cited figures come from Amazon’s own materials and are useful for understanding what the company says about its operations, but they are not independent audits of fleet size, performance, or employee impact.
