There is no single photo count for an “average” USB flash drive: it depends on the drive’s available space and the size and format of your images. On a nominal 64GB drive, published estimates range from about 800 12MP photos to about 16,000 photos under a 4MB-per-image assumption. Those figures use different assumptions, so your own files provide the best estimate.
Photo counts for a 64GB flash drive
These estimates are useful reference points, not competing measurements of identical photo libraries:
| Source and assumption | Estimated photos on 64GB |
|---|---|
| SanDisk USB-drive chart, based on a 10-megapixel camera; updated June 3, 2026 | About 2,000 |
| Kingston chart, 12MP photos; April 2019 | About 800 |
| Picture Keeper estimate, about 4MB per modern phone photo; accessed October 7, 2026 | About 16,000 |
| Kingston chart, 24MP uncompressed RAW photos; April 2019 | About 6,400 |
The difference comes from what each estimate counts: megapixels alone do not determine file size, and compressed JPEG or phone images are not equivalent to uncompressed RAW files. Picture Keeper also notes that camera, settings, and image content affect the resulting size. Treat each figure as an estimate under its stated assumptions, not a guaranteed capacity.

SanDisk’s USB-drive table, using its 10-megapixel-camera assumption, estimates about 250 photos on 8GB, 500 on 16GB, 1,000 on 32GB, and 2,000 on 64GB. SanDisk cautions that the actual quantity can vary by device. The figures are a single chart’s estimates, not universal counts.

- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
For another way to understand image size, SanDisk’s memory-card chart lists a 12MP JPEG at 3.6MB. That is an image-size reference, not a USB-specific capacity estimate. Picture Keeper’s separate 4MB-per-photo assumption yields its estimates of about 4,000 images on 16GB, 8,000 on 32GB, and 16,000 on 64GB. These charts should not be merged into one table as if they used the same image definition.
Estimate how many of your photos will fit
- Check available space. Use the drive’s free space, not just the capacity printed on its label. Formatting and other functions take some space, and existing files reduce what remains.
- Find a representative average file size. Check several photos from the collection you plan to copy. Include the formats and camera settings you actually use; unusually small or large images can skew a single-file guess.
- Divide free space by average photo size. Use the same units for both values, then round down. The result is a rough upper estimate because other files and filesystem overhead also use space.
For example, applying Picture Keeper’s approximate 4MB-per-photo assumption to a nominal 64GB drive gives a rough estimate of about 16,000 images before accounting for formatting and other files. This is arithmetic based on that assumption, not a tested result or a promise of how many files a particular drive will hold.

Why the count changes
- Image format and compression: A compressed JPEG and an uncompressed RAW file can take very different amounts of space. Kingston’s chart, for example, separately estimates 800 12MP photos and 6,400 24MP uncompressed RAW photos on 64GB; these are distinct chart categories, not a direct comparison of identical images.
- Resolution and camera settings: Higher resolution or different capture settings can change file size. SanDisk’s image-capacity chart connects its JPEG estimate to megapixels, while Picture Keeper identifies camera and settings as factors.
- Image content: Photos from the same device and settings can still differ in size because their content differs, according to Picture Keeper.
- Space consumed by the drive and other files: A labeled capacity is not all available for photographs. Formatting and any existing files reduce the space you can use.
For a more detailed explanation of how megapixels and JPEG assumptions affect image-size estimates, see SanDisk’s memory-card photo-capacity chart. Its counts are for memory cards, so use it to understand image-size assumptions rather than as a USB-drive guarantee.
