Interpreting “6 dots” as a standard braille cell, the answer is 64 possible patterns: each of the six positions can be raised or left empty. One pattern has no raised dots, so there are 63 patterns with at least one raised dot. What a pattern means depends on the language, braille code and context; there is no universal letter assignment.
How many combinations are possible with six dots?
A six-dot braille cell has two columns and three rows. Each position has two possible states: raised or empty. That gives 26, or 64, possible patterns. The calculation follows directly from six independent binary choices.
The count includes the cell with all six positions empty. Excluding that blank leaves 63 patterns containing one or more raised dots. That is why references may describe braille as having 64 combinations or 63 dot-bearing characters: they are counting different things. The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) explains the 63-pattern count, while the Unicode Consortium’s Unicode 17.0.0 specification describes 64 possible combinations.
What do the numbers in a braille cell mean?
Dot numbers identify positions, not values or a sequence to read. Number down the left column first, then down the right:

- Left column, top to bottom: dots 1, 2 and 3.
- Right column, top to bottom: dots 4, 5 and 6.
For example, “dots 1 and 4” means the top position of each column is raised. The numbering lets a pattern be described precisely without a diagram. The NLS calls the six-dot cell the basic unit for reading and writing braille.
What does each braille dot pattern mean?
A pattern’s meaning is assigned by the braille code and language in use. Depending on that system and its surrounding context, a cell can represent a letter, a number, punctuation, a word or another symbol. The physical pattern alone does not provide a universal translation.

For an English alphabet example in the United States and Canada, the Braille Authority of North America identifies Unified English Braille (UEB) as the official code. Its braille alphabet reference is a useful chart for seeing letter patterns in that specific code. Do not assume that a chart for one language or code explains every braille text.

Louis Braille adapted an idea from a military night-writing system. According to the Library of Congress NLS account, he encountered that code in 1821; it used 12 dots arranged two wide by six high, a cell too large to read at a touch. Braille reduced the cell to six dots so its patterns could be distinguished within a fingertip’s reach.

The dates describe different milestones: the NLS says Braille encountered the earlier code in 1821 and published his own system in 1829. His system extended beyond letters to music and other notation. The NLS recounts this history in About Braille.
How do six-dot and eight-dot braille differ?
Adding two positions expands the number of possible physical patterns, but it does not create a single universal mapping from patterns to meanings. Unicode 17.0.0 gives the pattern counts below:

Eight-dot systems extend the cell for additional uses. In either system, the physical inventory is distinct from the rules that assign characters or symbols to patterns. See the Unicode Consortium’s Unicode 17.0.0, Chapter 21 for information about braille patterns.

What to remember when reading a pattern chart
- Check the language and code named on the chart; the same physical pattern is not guaranteed to mean the same thing everywhere.
- Distinguish the total pattern count from the number of patterns with raised dots: the former includes the blank cell.
- Look for context. A cell may function as a letter, number, punctuation mark, contraction or other symbol under the relevant code.
The NLS also describes contracted English braille, in which a cell can represent groups of letters or words rather than only a single letter. Its Braille 200 page provides further historical and learning context.
