You need four compatible controllers total for four people to play local split-screen Battle Mode on one Nintendo Switch 2—one controller for each player. If you already have one, you need three more.

What kind of four-player game does that answer cover?

Four players on one console means Battle Mode. Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions say Battle Mode supports up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2, and the version 1.2.0 update notes specify that split-screen play requires a controller for each player.

That is different from playing together in the story-focused modes. Nintendo describes Campaign and Challenge co-op as two-player arrangements: one person pilots while the other operates the guns. Those modes do not turn the four-player Battle Mode limit into four-player campaign co-op.

How many controllers should you have ready?

Count players, not consoles: for four local Battle Mode players, have four compatible controllers ready. Nintendo’s update note is explicit: “A controller is required for each player.” The arithmetic is straightforward:

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Neon Purple/Neon Orange Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
  • Four players, no controllers available: four controllers needed.
  • Four players, one controller already available: three additional controllers needed.
  • Fewer than four players: provide one controller for each person joining Battle Mode.

This count is for the local split-screen arrangement on a single Nintendo Switch 2. It does not mean four controller pairs are required: Nintendo’s update notes allow Joy-Con 2 and original Joy-Con controllers to be used individually in horizontal grip for split-screen play. In that configuration, an individual Joy-Con can serve as one player’s controller.

Which controllers can you use?

Nintendo lists Joy-Con 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller as supported options. Nintendo’s Star Fox information also mentions the Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch. The version 1.2.0 update notes specifically say Joy-Con 2 and original Joy-Con controllers can be used solo in horizontal grip for split-screen.

Joy-Con 2 Listed as a supported controller; the update notes allow solo horizontal use for split-screen. Use one controller for each player. A solo horizontal Joy-Con 2 can serve one player.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller Listed as a supported option. Count one controller per player using one.
Original Joy-Con The update notes allow solo horizontal use for split-screen. A solo horizontal Joy-Con can serve one player.
Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch Mentioned in Nintendo’s Star Fox controller information. Count one controller per player using one; confirm the controller and console compatibility for your setup.

Before organizing a match, check that the specific controller is compatible with the console and the game. The supported-controller information is not a promise that every controller model or every pairing arrangement works in every configuration.

Does online play change the number?

Nintendo of America lists Star Fox for single-system play with one to four players and online play with one to eight players. These are separate player arrangements. The online maximum of eight does not mean that one Switch 2 can host eight local players; the four-controller answer applies to four people playing locally on the same system.

What should you check if four-player split-screen is unavailable?

  1. Confirm the mode. The four-player local option is Battle Mode, not Campaign or Challenge co-op.
  2. Check the game version. Nintendo’s South Africa Support page says version 1.2.0, released on 30 September 2026, added split-screen play for up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2 console. If the feature is missing, check that Star Fox is updated to that version or later.
  3. Count controllers by player. Make sure every person joining local Battle Mode has a controller; the update note requires one per player.
  4. Check the controller type and grip. Nintendo specifically identifies solo horizontal grip for Joy-Con 2 and original Joy-Con in split-screen. For other supported options, use the compatible controller as intended and verify compatibility with the console.

The key distinction is the setup: four people sharing one Switch 2 in Battle Mode need four controllers, while the game’s online player limit describes a different arrangement.
