The decisive difference is the job each vehicle is designed to do. A main battle tank (MBT) is built around protected direct-fire combat, especially against enemy armored forces. An infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) carries infantry under armor and supports them while they fight mounted or on foot. “Light tank” describes a lighter direct-fire concept in some armies and periods, but it has no universal modern weight or capability threshold.

Weight, gun caliber and speed can help describe a vehicle, but they do not define its category by themselves. Mission, the troops or weapons it carries, protection, mobility and use within a combined-arms force provide a more reliable comparison.

The three types at a glance

Vehicle type Primary mission Infantry carried for combat Typical weapon emphasis Design priority
Main battle tank Protected direct-fire combat, including engagement of enemy armored units No infantry squad as its defining payload Heavy direct-fire armament for armored and fortified targets Balance of firepower, protection and mobility
Light tank Lighter protected direct-fire support in a particular doctrine or program Depends on the vehicle; carrying infantry is not the defining feature Direct fire suited to the claimed infantry-support, reconnaissance or security role Mobility and deployability traded against protection and firepower
Infantry fighting vehicle Transport infantry under armor and support their mounted and dismounted combat Yes; carrying fighting infantry is central to the design Automatic cannon and, on some vehicles, antitank guided weapons Protected troop movement combined with weapons for infantry support

These are role-based descriptions rather than rigid international standards. Armies organize and name vehicles according to their own doctrine, technology and period. A vehicle can have an antitank missile without becoming an MBT, and a vehicle called “light” is not automatically a reconnaissance vehicle or an IFV.

Main battle tanks: protected direct-fire combat

What an MBT is intended to do

An MBT is the armored force’s principal direct-fire platform. Its crew fights from inside a heavily protected vehicle, using the main weapon to defeat enemy tanks, armored vehicles, prepared positions and other battlefield targets. The German Army describes the primary task of its main battle tanks as engaging enemy armored units, particularly in open terrain. That is a summary of priority, not a rule that tanks can attack only armored vehicles.

The vehicle is expected to remain effective while exposed to enemy fire. Its protection allows it to close with or hold against threats; its direct-fire weapon provides destructive power at useful battlefield ranges; and its mobility lets the unit maneuver, exploit an opening or take a position. These qualities are interdependent rather than separate options.

The protection–firepower–mobility balance

The British Army describes tank effectiveness as a balance between protection, firepower and mobility, sometimes called the “Iron Trinity.” Increasing one characteristic usually affects the others through mass, space, power requirements, logistics or tactical speed. A heavily protected tank may be harder to move strategically or may sacrifice acceleration and road speed. A highly mobile design may carry less protection or a smaller weapon than a heavier peer.

Challenger 2 illustrates the principle. The British Army identifies it as a main battle tank designed to destroy other tanks and publishes a 120 mm L30A1 main armament. Its currently published specifications, accessed on 2026-10-13, list a base mass of 62.5 tonnes and 75.0 tonnes when combat-ready with add-on armor modules, plus a maximum road speed of 59 km/h and an off-road speed of 40 km/h. Those figures describe Challenger 2; they are not class-wide MBT limits.

Light tanks: a role and doctrine, not a universal measurement

Why the label is difficult

Unlike “main battle tank,” “light tank” does not have one universally accepted present-day definition. Different countries and eras have used the term for vehicles intended to provide direct fire with lower mass, easier transport, greater operational mobility or a specific infantry-support and reconnaissance function. A weight cutoff that seems useful for one period can misclassify vehicles in another because armor, engines, sensors and weapons change over time.

For that reason, identify the vehicle’s stated mission before judging what “light” means. Ask whether it is meant to support infantry, accompany reconnaissance, provide mobile firepower for a brigade, operate where heavier vehicles cannot, or perform several of those jobs. The name alone does not establish its armor, gun, survivability or ability to defeat an MBT.

The M10 Booker example

The U.S. Army described the M10 Booker as a mobile protected-firepower or direct-fire vehicle intended to support infantry brigades. That makes it a useful example of a lighter direct-fire concept, not proof that every army recognizes a standard “light tank” category. In June 2025, the Army announced that it would cease M10 procurement and that the vehicle would not enter full-rate production. It should therefore not be presented as a current standard light tank in uninterrupted service.

The M10 case also shows why acquisition status matters. A program’s label, intended mission and final fielding status can differ; describing one accurately requires naming the service and the date of the decision.

Infantry fighting vehicles: protected transport that fights

The infantry payload is the defining feature

An IFV carries infantry under armor to the point where they must fight, then supports those soldiers after they dismount. The vehicle is not merely a battlefield taxi. Its own crew fights alongside the infantry, using the vehicle’s weapons while the squad alternates between mounted movement and dismounted action.

The Bundeswehr describes the Puma and Marder as infantry fighting vehicles and as the primary weapon systems of armored infantry. It summarizes the tactical principle as: “Mounted for as long as possible – dismounted for no longer than necessary.” Whether soldiers remain inside or leave the vehicle depends on enemy fire, terrain, obstacles, objectives and the need to search or occupy ground.

Weapons beyond the troop compartment

An IFV’s cannon is intended to suppress or destroy threats to the infantry, such as enemy troops, light vehicles, firing positions and other battlefield targets. Some IFVs also carry antitank guided weapons. The Bundeswehr states that Marder crews can engage main battle tanks and armored vehicles with antitank weapons such as the MILAN guided missile. Therefore, “only tanks can fight tanks” is an incorrect shortcut. The distinction is that antitank capability is one part of an IFV’s support mission, while defeating armored forces through protected direct-fire action is the MBT’s central mission.

Vehicle-specific capacity and range

The German Army says both Puma and Marder can carry as many as six soldiers. It also describes the Puma’s stabilized automatic cannon as capable of precise target engagement out to 3,000 metres while moving. Those are specifications for the named German vehicles, not universal requirements for every IFV. Puma has gradually replaced Marder in field units, while Marder remains in use according to the Bundeswehr description.

How the categories differ in practice

Mission and intended targets

Start with the question, “What problem is this vehicle built to solve?” An MBT is optimized to survive and deliver direct fire against heavily armed opponents. An IFV is optimized to put infantry into the fight and keep supporting them as they dismount. A light tank is optimized around a lighter direct-fire capability whose exact purpose depends on national doctrine.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

These priorities overlap. An MBT can support infantry, an IFV can attack armor with a missile, and a light tank can be assigned to security or reconnaissance. The primary mission still explains the design better than a single weapon or specification.

Who fights from the vehicle

An MBT’s defining occupants are its vehicle crew. An IFV’s defining cargo is a combat infantry element that can fight from inside briefly and then on foot. A light tank may carry no infantry squad or may include a limited crew-and-support arrangement, depending on the design; carrying infantry is not what makes it a light tank.

Protection and exposure

MBTs generally devote substantial design capacity to protection because they are expected to operate under concentrated direct fire. IFVs need enough protection to move infantry through dangerous areas, but they must also reserve weight and internal volume for the troop compartment, access points and dismounting equipment. A light tank accepts a different balance, often seeking lower mass or easier deployment while retaining protected direct fire.

Mobility and deployment

Mobility has several meanings: tactical movement across terrain, operational movement between theaters and strategic transport by road, rail, ship or aircraft. “Light” may refer to one of these advantages rather than to a specific number on a scale. An MBT’s greater mass can complicate bridges, transport and fuel support, while a lighter vehicle may reach places a heavier formation cannot. Those benefits do not automatically make the lighter vehicle more survivable or more powerful.

Why tanks and IFVs operate together

Modern armored formations are combined-arms forces. The Bundeswehr describes armored forces as a combination of tanks and armored infantry whose vehicles support one another according to terrain and task. Tanks provide protected direct fire and shock action; IFVs move infantry that can clear, hold or search ground; infantry protect vehicles from threats that are difficult to see or engage from inside; and both rely on reconnaissance, engineers, artillery, air defense and logistics.

In open terrain, tanks may lead the direct-fire fight while IFVs help suppress enemy positions and position infantry to secure ground. In built-up or restrictive terrain, dismounted infantry may be essential for clearing rooms, trenches, woods or obstacles that a tank cannot safely inspect alone. The correct question is not which vehicle is “better,” but which combination matches the terrain, enemy and task.

Recognizing a vehicle without relying on weight alone

  1. Identify the stated mission. Look for phrases such as main battle tank, armored infantry, direct-fire support, reconnaissance or protected troop transport in the service’s own description.
  2. Check whether it carries fighting infantry. A dedicated, armored passenger compartment and a dismountable squad strongly indicate an IFV.
  3. Examine the weapon role. A heavy direct-fire gun centered on armored combat suggests an MBT; an automatic cannon paired with a troop compartment suggests an IFV; a lighter direct-fire weapon requires the vehicle’s doctrine and program description to interpret it.
  4. Read protection and mobility together. Mass, add-on armor, road speed and off-road performance describe trade-offs, not category boundaries.
  5. Verify date and country. Names, procurement decisions and fielding status change. A current service page is more reliable than an old caption or an assumption based on a historical label.

Common misconceptions

  • “Any vehicle under a certain weight is a light tank.” No universal modern threshold sorts every vehicle. Weight must be interpreted with mission and doctrine.
  • “An IFV is just an armored personnel carrier.” An IFV carries infantry but also has weapons and sensors intended for combat alongside them.
  • “An IFV cannot threaten a tank.” Some IFVs carry antitank guided missiles; Marder is an official example. That capability does not make the IFV’s primary role identical to an MBT’s.
  • “A larger gun automatically makes a vehicle a tank.” Weapon caliber alone does not reveal whether the vehicle’s central job is armored breakthrough, infantry transport or a lighter direct-fire support role.
  • “A program name proves current service.” The M10 Booker’s procurement termination before full-rate production demonstrates why acquisition status and date belong in any description.

Bottom line

An MBT is the protected direct-fire specialist of an armored force. An IFV is the protected infantry carrier that also fights, allowing troops to switch between mounted and dismounted action. A light tank is a context-dependent lighter direct-fire concept whose meaning must be established from the particular army, period and mission. Compare vehicles by what they are designed to accomplish, whom they carry, how their weapons are used and how they balance protection with mobility—not by a single weight or caliber rule.
