Magnetism may have helped move gas through the disk of material around the newborn Sun, according to a 2026 study of ancient meteorite inclusions. The evidence is a preserved magnetic record in calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions from the Antarctic meteorite DOM 08006. It supports a role for magnetic fields during the solar system’s early growth, but does not show that magnetism alone formed the Sun or planets.

How the solar system formed

The broad sequence begins with a cloud of gas and dust collapsing under gravity. As material fell inward, rotation flattened it into a disk. Most of the matter gathered at the center to form the young Sun; particles left in the surrounding disk collided and accumulated into larger bodies, eventually building planets.

The new finding adds evidence about conditions inside that early disk. It does not replace the cloud-collapse account or provide a complete explanation of how planets formed. NASA outlines the overall sequence in its solar-system formation overview.

What the meteorite evidence suggests

Researchers examined magnetic minerals in calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions, or CAIs, from DOM 08006. CAIs formed very early in solar-system history, and some survived inside meteorites. Their magnetic record can preserve clues about the field present as the material formed or cooled.

The study reports paleomagnetic evidence for a magnetic field in the solar nebula—the disk surrounding the young Sun—during a period when the disk was accreting onto the protostar. Its interpretation is that the field was strong enough to be relevant to disk accretion, the process by which material moves through the disk and onto the central young star. The primary study is titled “Paleomagnetic evidence for a nebular magnetic field from calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions” and was published in 2026.

Why a magnetic field matters

Gas in a rotating disk carries angular momentum. Magnetic forces can help redistribute that angular momentum and move gas through the disk, including inward toward the young star. The finding therefore makes magnetism a plausible contributor to how the early Sun gathered material, alongside gravity and the other processes shaping the disk.

This interpretation is consistent with the broader use of meteorite paleomagnetism: measurements of primitive material can help scientists constrain magnetic fields and the evolution of the solar nebula when direct observations of the Sun’s birth environment are impossible. A 2020 review discusses that role in “History of the solar nebula from meteorite paleomagnetism”.

What the result does—and does not—establish

  • It supports: a magnetic field existed in the early solar nebula during an accretion stage, based on the magnetic record in ancient CAIs.
  • It suggests: magnetic forces may have helped transport gas through the disk and feed the young Sun.
  • It does not prove: that magnetism alone caused the Sun or solar system to form, that gravity was unimportant, or that magnetism explains the full process of planet formation.

The study’s exact field-strength measurement and uncertainty are not available in the accessible study record, so a numerical estimate should not be inferred from this result. The careful conclusion is that the meteorite evidence strengthens the case for including magnetism in models of the early disk, not that it settles the relative importance of every force involved.

How scientists can read an ancient magnetic record

Paleomagnetism is the study of magnetic signals retained in rocks and minerals. When suitable minerals formed or cooled, they could preserve information about the magnetic field around them. By measuring that record in primitive meteorite material, researchers can investigate conditions in the early solar system long after the original disk disappeared.

That makes the DOM 08006 inclusions a record of an early environment, rather than a direct observation of the disk itself. The result is evidence to test against models of solar-system formation, not a movie-like reconstruction of how the Sun and planets came together.
