Scientists made a microscopic structure resembling Istanbul’s Blue Mosque by using a patterned magnetic field to guide colloidal particles—not by shaping a solid mould like the mosque. The 2013 demonstration showed how a magnetic-field pattern could position both magnetic and non-magnetic particles into designed arrangements.
What a “virtual mould” means
A virtual mould is a pattern of magnetic-field gradients that steers particles toward selected locations. It is not a physical mould with the final structure’s shape. In the reported setup, a photolithographically patterned nickel grid was embedded in PDMS and placed on a permanent magnet. The nickel regions produced stronger magnetic fields than the neighboring areas. Paramagnetic particles were drawn toward the stronger-field regions, while non-magnetic particles moved toward adjacent weaker-field regions. The pattern of strong and weak fields therefore guided where the particles assembled. Chemistry World explains the setup.
How the team made the Blue Mosque shape
The researchers designed the field pattern to arrange colloidal features in a layout reminiscent of the building’s architecture. Chemistry World describes large domes connected by arches, alongside four unconnected satellite domes. The result was a microscopic facsimile of prominent architectural forms, not a full-scale model of the mosque. The report does not give a separate performance figure for this particular mosque-shaped arrangement. The contemporary report describes its geometry.
What the 2013 study demonstrated
Demirörs, Pillai, Kowalczyk and Grzybowski reported the method in Nature, volume 503, pages 99–103; the paper was published online on 20 October 2013. Their demonstrations included arrays and three-dimensional structures, as well as colloidal molecules, using polymer and silica particles and live bacteria. The authors reported assemblies involving approximately 108 particles, micrometre precision and typical yields of 80–90%. These are the paper’s reported results, not figures from independent replication or current commercial systems. The original paper reports the method and performance; PubMed lists the paper’s authors and publication details.

What kinds of structures and particles could be arranged?
The technique was presented as a way to assemble different particle types and shapes of structure, rather than as a method dedicated to mosque-like designs.
- Particle type: The authors demonstrated both magnetic and non-magnetic colloids.
- Arrangement: The reported structures included planar arrays and three-dimensional assemblies.
- Target geometry: Examples included arrays, clusters, arches and colloidal molecules.
- Materials: Demonstrations used polymer particles, silica particles and live bacteria.
The bacteria demonstration was a laboratory example; it does not establish clinical or medical readiness. The study emphasized handling particles in parallel, rather than placing each one individually. The authors describe the demonstrated structures and materials; Chemistry World reports on the bacteria example.

- Physics is a practical science. Good quality, appropriate physics activities and investigations are not just motivational and fun: They can also sharpen students’ powers of observation, stimulating questions. And they are the key to enhanced learning, clarification and consolidation of theory.
- Some popular activities done with the kit: What sticks? Attractive or Repulsive? Earth is a giant magnet. Seeing magnetic fields? Interactive forces.
What the result does—and does not—show
The study showed that a designed magnetic-field pattern could guide particles into complex arrangements without a solid mould matching the final shape. The authors also reported that the resulting structures could be made permanent. However, they identified a scale limitation: the method was then restricted to manipulating micrometre-sized objects. The 2013 paper does not establish present-day industrial adoption, clinical use or commercial availability. The original paper describes the permanence claim and size limitation.
