Magic: The Gathering legality is defined by format. A set on Wizards of the Coast’s current Standard list is eligible for Standard play, but a card can still be excluded by a ban or a product-specific rule. Standard normally removes its six oldest sets once a year and keeps roughly three years of releases. Wizards has made an important exception: there is no Standard rotation in 2026. Starting with the first set released in 2027, the annual rotation is planned to occur alongside that first calendar-year release while preserving a three-year Standard environment.

To check any card, identify the format and date of the event, consult that format’s live legality page, confirm the set or card is listed, and then check the current banned list. Release notes may be necessary for unusual products, reprints, or set-code exceptions.

What “legal” means in Magic

Magic does not have one universal list of legal cards. Every constructed format defines its own card pool, deck rules, banned list, and—in some cases—rotation policy. A card can be legal in one format and illegal in another on the same day.

When Wizards lists a set as legal in Standard, that establishes that cards from the set may be used in Standard, subject to individual card bans and the format’s other rules. It does not automatically make every card from that release legal in Pioneer, Modern, Commander, Legacy, Vintage, or a digital format. Those formats maintain their own legality systems.

Set legality and card legality are separate checks

  • Set check: Is the relevant set or product included in the format’s current legal pool?
  • Card check: Is the specific card banned, restricted, or otherwise excluded?
  • Product check: Is this a normal expansion card, a reprint, a Commander-only card, or another supplemental release with special treatment?
  • Date check: Will the card still be legal on the date you play? A list can change between deck construction and an event.

This is why a deck builder’s set filter is only a starting point. The format’s official page and banned list are the final practical authority for sanctioned play.

How Standard works now

Wizards’ Standard format description specifies a minimum 60-card main deck and a sideboard of up to 15 cards. Standard’s legal pool changes over time: once per year, after the first premier-set Prerelease of the year, the six oldest Standard sets normally rotate out.

In 2023, Wizards changed the intended Standard card lifecycle from two years to three years. That means a normal Standard set can be available for about three years, although its exact time in the format depends on its release timing and any policy transition. “About three years” is more accurate than promising an exact number of months for every card.

The 2026 exception

Wizards announced that Standard will not rotate in 2026. Existing Standard sets therefore remain in the format through that calendar year unless a separate legality or ban decision changes an individual card.

The planned 2027 schedule

Beginning with the first release of 2027, Wizards plans to align the annual rotation with the first set released in the calendar year rather than waiting for the first premier-set Prerelease. Standard is still intended to contain three years of sets. The practical consequence is that the 2027 first-set release becomes the next scheduled rotation point after the no-rotation year.

Period Policy or event What it means for players
Before the 2023 policy change Standard generally used a two-year lifecycle Older guides may describe cards leaving after roughly two years.
2023 transition Wizards extended the intended lifecycle to three years and did not rotate Standard with Wilds of Eldraine The change kept older sets in Standard longer than the former schedule.
2024 Wizards identified Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, and Streets of New Capenna as the sets rotating out These named sets illustrate the transition to the longer lifecycle.
2026 No Standard rotation Do not remove cards solely because an annual rotation would normally be expected.
First set of 2027 and afterward Annual rotation is planned to coincide with the first calendar-year set, while keeping three years of Standard sets Use the first 2027 release as the next scheduled rotation checkpoint, then verify each future date on the live Standard page.

How to verify a set or card before playing

  1. Name the format precisely. Say tabletop Standard, MTG Arena Standard, Modern, Pioneer, Commander, or another format. “Is this card legal?” is incomplete without the format.
  2. Open the current official format page. Wizards’ Standard page is the live source for the Standard set list and its deck-size rules. Other formats have separate pages and rules.
  3. Find the set or product. Confirm the exact expansion name and, when relevant, the three-letter set code. A similarly named supplemental product may not receive the same treatment as a premier expansion.
  4. Search for the individual card. A set being legal does not override a ban. Check the current banned-and-restricted information for the format and the date you intend to play.
  5. Read release notes for exceptions. New products can define which cards enter which formats, how reprints work, and whether a particular set code is allowed.
  6. Check the event date and platform. Tabletop and Arena can apply different pools or update at different times. Recheck before submitting a list for a tournament or buying a large number of cards.

If you are looking for current Standard cards, “Magic: The Gathering Foundations cards” is an example of a useful shopping search phrase because Magic: The Gathering Foundations appears on the current official Standard-legal set list. Verify that listing again before purchasing, since set lists and rotation policies are live information.

Why set codes, reprints, and release notes matter

Most normal expansion cards are easy to classify by their set and the format’s published pool. Supplemental releases and reprints can be less intuitive. Wizards’ Reality Fracture release notes provide a concrete example: cards with the FRA code are permitted in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Commander, and other formats named in those notes; new FRC Commander cards are permitted in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage; and reprints follow the formats in which that card name is already legal.

The lesson is not to infer legality from the product’s marketing name. Read the release notes when a card comes from a special set, has an unfamiliar code, or appears as a reprint. A reprinted card does not automatically gain legality in every format merely because the new printing is recent.

What happens when a card rotates out of Standard

Rotation removes a card from Standard; it does not erase the card, invalidate the physical copy, or automatically ban it everywhere else. After rotation, evaluate the card against each format separately.

  • Another constructed format: The card may remain legal if that format’s card pool includes it and it is not banned there.
  • Modern: Modern is explicitly non-rotating. Wizards describes it as a format containing cards and strategies from roughly the last two decades, subject to its own banned list.
  • MTG Arena: A card leaving Arena Standard is not automatically unusable on the platform. Arena formats such as Historic use different legality rules.
  • Casual play: A playgroup can agree to house rules, but those agreements are not the same as sanctioned-format legality.

For deck planning, rotation is therefore a change in where a card can be used, not a universal expiration date. A card that was bought for Standard may still have a role in another format, but you must check that format’s current list rather than assume portability.

Standard versus other major formats

Format Rotation policy Pool or implementation notes What to verify
Tabletop Standard Normally annual; six oldest sets leave after the first premier-set Prerelease, with no rotation in 2026 and a planned first-set-of-2027 schedule Three-year Standard environment; 60-card minimum main deck and up to a 15-card sideboard Current set list, card bans, release date, and event date
MTG Arena Standard Rotates as a changing format Digital implementation; Arena’s other formats use separate legality rules The Arena format page and current in-client legality information
Historic on Arena Not governed by Standard’s rotation list A card leaving Standard is not automatically removed from Historic Historic’s own card pool and ban information
Modern Does not rotate Includes cards and strategies from the last two decades, subject to Modern’s banned list Modern legality and bans, not Standard rotation
Pioneer, Commander, Legacy, and Vintage Each has its own rules; Standard rotation does not decide legality Special products and reprints can receive format-specific treatment The relevant format page plus any product release notes

Why older online guides disagree

Many articles still say Standard cards last two years because they describe the policy that existed before Wizards’ 2023 change. The transition also skipped a rotation with Wilds of Eldraine, so a simple “every fall” rule can produce the wrong answer for cards released around that period.

Use the publication date of a guide as a warning sign, not as proof that it is wrong. The reliable approach is to compare its claimed rotation date with Wizards’ current Standard page and the current banned list. The 2026 no-rotation announcement is another reason a previously accurate annual schedule may now be stale.

Practical deckbuilding and purchase checklist

Before buying cards

  • Choose the format and whether you are playing tabletop or Arena.
  • Check the current legal set list and the individual card’s status.
  • Estimate how soon the next scheduled rotation affects the deck.
  • Read release notes if any card comes from a supplemental product or unusual reprint.
  • Save the event date and recheck legality shortly before registering.

When a deck suddenly shows as illegal

  1. Confirm that the deck is set to the intended format rather than a different Standard-like or Arena format.
  2. Look for a card from a set that has just rotated or for a card newly added to a banned list.
  3. Check whether the card is a special-product printing with different format permissions.
  4. Replace the card only after identifying the actual cause; a newer printing alone may not solve a format mismatch.

After rotation

  • Remove rotated cards from the Standard list for the next event.
  • Check whether those cards fit Modern, Pioneer, Commander, Historic, or another format you play.
  • Keep a separate record of format legality so a future ban or policy change does not surprise you.

The reliable rule to remember

Ask three questions in order: Which format? Which date? Which exact card and set code? Then confirm the answer on the format’s current official page, read the banned list, and consult release notes for exceptions. For Standard specifically, remember that 2026 has no rotation; the planned next annual rotation is tied to the first 2027 release, with a continuing three-year set window.
