Yes—you can use AI-generated B-roll in a Mac video-editing workflow. Services such as Adobe Firefly and Runway document ways to create clips from text prompts or reference images, then bring them into editing projects. Treat the results as candidate footage to review and edit, not guaranteed finished shots: the available product documentation does not establish that AI clips are consistently better, cheaper, or faster than stock footage or filming.
How AI-generated B-roll fits a Mac workflow
B-roll is supporting footage that helps illustrate a subject, cover a cut, or add visual context. With AI generation, the process can start with a written description or a still image. You generate one or more candidate clips, choose what works, and incorporate it into the edit.
The Mac question is often about the handoff rather than local rendering. Runway’s Premiere Pro plugin documentation says the plugin is available on macOS and Windows, requires a Runway account and internet access, and processes generations on Runway’s servers. Adobe has described Firefly video generation as connected with Creative Cloud apps, including Premiere Pro. These descriptions do not establish a particular Mac chip or GPU requirement for cloud generation.

Adobe Firefly: prompt or image to video
Adobe’s February 12, 2025 announcement said Firefly Generate Video was then in public beta, supported text-to-video and image-to-video, and could generate B-roll to fill timeline gaps. Adobe described output up to 1080p at launch, along with camera settings, motion paths, and first- and last-frame controls. These are details from that dated announcement, not a guarantee of current availability or specifications.

In a July 17, 2025 update, Adobe described vertical, horizontal, and square aspect ratios, composition references, style presets, and sound-effect generation. It also discussed partner-model availability in Firefly Boards and planned additions to Generate Video. That announcement does not establish that every partner model or planned feature is available now.
Adobe reported more than 18 billion Firefly assets generated globally in its February 2025 newsroom announcement. That is Adobe’s self-reported total for Firefly assets—not a count of video clips, active creators, or evidence of output quality.

Runway: generation from inside Premiere Pro
Runway documents a Premiere Pro plugin that can generate video scenes and B-roll and import finished results into a project. Its documentation says the plugin works on macOS and Windows, needs a Runway account and internet access, and sends generations to Runway’s servers. It also says generation uses plan credits and the plugin feature is available on a Standard plan or higher; check the live documentation for current eligibility and terms.
Adobe and Runway announced a partnership in December 2025. Adobe’s dated release said Runway Gen-4.5 was available in Firefly and on Runway at that time, with routes for taking clips into Firefly’s editor and Creative Cloud apps. That announcement is not proof of October 2026 availability or current plan terms.

What to evaluate before building a shot around a generated clip
Choose the right starting point
A prompt-only workflow is suitable when you can describe the scene without needing to match a particular image. A reference-image workflow gives the generator a visual starting point, which may help when composition or style matters. Neither approach guarantees a usable result; inspect the clip against the actual cut.

Direct the frame and motion
Check which controls are available for the model you plan to use: aspect ratio, composition references, camera movement, motion paths, or first and last frames. Feature lists can differ by model and can change over time, so do not assume controls described for one Firefly model or release apply to every model in the service.

Check continuity across shots
A clip that looks plausible on its own may not match the subject, lighting, or movement in neighboring footage. Runway’s explainer identifies consistency across longer clips and multiple shots as an ongoing challenge in the field. Use generated footage selectively and judge continuity in the edit rather than assuming several separate generations will form a coherent sequence.
Account for iteration and handoff
Runway’s documented plugin route puts generation inside Premiere Pro, while Adobe describes Firefly connections with Creative Cloud. The exact steps and availability depend on the current product setup. Both approaches involve generating and selecting candidates; the documentation does not establish a measured time saving or a comparable current cost. Check plan credits, model access, and export or import requirements before relying on a particular workflow.
Check commercial rights, inputs, and provenance
Commercial-use rules depend on the provider, the model, and the material you submit. Read the current terms for the exact service and model before using a clip in a client project, advertisement, monetized video, or other commercial work.

It says commercial uses such as monetized YouTube uploads and advertising are permitted under Runway’s terms, and formal credit is not required. This does not clear third-party material in an input, including a person’s likeness or a trademark.
- Adobe Firefly: Adobe describes Firefly as commercially safe and says its model was trained on material it had permission to use, including licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain material; Adobe also says it did not train on Adobe customer content. Adobe’s February 2025 announcement said wholly AI-generated Firefly Video outputs would include Content Credentials. Attribute these representations to Adobe; they should not be extended to partner models accessed through Firefly or to all AI-video tools.
Before generation, confirm that you have permission to upload any reference image, footage, or other material. A provider’s terms for generated output do not by themselves settle the rights attached to source inputs or guarantee that every use is clear.
