The white lines radiating from some lunar craters are ejecta rays: blankets and streaks of rock launched by an impact and deposited across the surface. They look bright because the material is freshly excavated, because its composition contrasts with nearby terrain, or both. Solar-wind irradiation, micrometeorite impacts and later impact gardening gradually mature and darken the grains, reducing the contrast until the rays merge visually with the surrounding Moon. Ray brightness is therefore a useful relative age clue, not a universal stopwatch.
What lunar crater rays are
A lunar ray is a light-toned, usually radial streak associated with an impact crater. It is not a crack, a beam of light or a feature carved by volcanic activity. The ray is made from impact debris that traveled outward from the crater and settled back onto the surface. NASA summarizes the process as “plumes of ejecta that settle back onto the surface” forming the bright rays seen around many craters.
The debris is deposited at several distances and in several forms. Coarser fragments land relatively close to the crater, building an ejecta blanket. Finer particles and fragments can travel much farther, creating thin, discontinuous streaks that extend hundreds of kilometers. The resulting pattern often resembles spokes on a wheel because the impact excavates and launches material in many directions at once.
Primary ejecta and the blanket around the crater
During a hypervelocity impact, a projectile compresses and excavates the target surface almost instantaneously. Rock from different depths is accelerated outward along ballistic trajectories. Material that lands near the rim forms a hummocky or textured blanket, while material that travels farther can form narrow rays. The blanket and the distant streaks are parts of the same impact-deposit system, even though they look different at different scales.

Secondary craters along the rays
Some of the larger fragments remain intact long enough to strike the Moon again. These impacts produce secondary craters, often in chains or clusters. Because the fragments came from the primary crater, the secondary craters commonly trace the same radial corridors as the bright streaks. NASA’s lunar-ray glossary notes that rays can include both finely divided ejecta and secondary-crater clusters.
Secondary craters help investigators distinguish a genuine ejecta system from a coincidence of unrelated bright patches. A long ray may be easiest to see in an image, while a chain of small pits along the same direction provides additional evidence that material was launched from the central crater.
Why rays look white or bright
Brightness is fundamentally a reflectance difference. Freshly exposed rock and soil generally reflect more sunlight than lunar regolith that has been sitting on the surface for a long time. An impact can excavate material from below the mature, darkened surface layer and spread it over older terrain. Against that darker background, the new deposit appears pale.

The Moon has no substantial atmosphere, liquid water or active soil cycle to quickly recycle its surface. Instead, exposed grains are slowly altered by the space environment. Newly excavated grains have experienced less of that alteration, so they can retain a higher reflectance. NASA describes high-reflectance ejecta as a usual sign of a young crater, using less than 500 million years as a typical guide for a young crater in lunar-geologic terms. That figure is a broad interpretive benchmark, not an expiration date at which every ray suddenly disappears.
Composition can keep a ray bright
Freshness is not the only explanation for a bright streak. The peer-reviewed study The origin of lunar crater rays reports that rays may be conspicuous because of compositional contrast with their surroundings, immature material, or a combination of both. For example, highlands-rich ejecta can remain noticeably lighter when it lies on dark mare basalt. In that situation, the ray’s contrast depends partly on what the crater excavated and where it was deposited.

This distinction matters when comparing craters in different regions. A bright ray crossing a dark mare can be easier to detect than an equally fresh deposit laid across similarly bright highlands. Conversely, a compositionally unusual deposit may remain visible after substantial exposure and space weathering. Brightness alone cannot identify the crater’s age without considering the local geology.
How an impact creates the radial pattern
- Impact and excavation: A meteoroid strikes at hypervelocity, producing a shock wave and excavating a transient cavity.
- Ballistic launch: Rock fragments and pulverized soil leave the cavity on trajectories that spread outward from the impact point.
- Near-field deposition: Large fragments and thick debris settle around the rim, forming the ejecta blanket.
- Far-field deposition: Finer particles and faster fragments travel farther and settle in thin, light-toned streaks.
- Secondary impacts: Some large fragments strike the surface again, producing secondary craters and clusters along radial paths.
- Post-impact modification: Later impacts, solar-wind exposure and micrometeorite bombardment alter both the deposit and its visibility.
The rays are therefore a map of material transport. Their directions point back approximately toward the source crater, although local topography, impact angle and later overlapping deposits can make individual streaks irregular or discontinuous.

Why lunar rays fade
Rays fade visually rather than being cleanly removed. The ejecta remains mixed into the upper surface, but its reflectance gradually approaches that of the surrounding regolith. NASA’s description of Tycho says that craters begin with conspicuous rays and that the rays gradually fade as exposure to the space environment darkens them until they blend into the background.
Micrometeorite bombardment
Tiny particles strike the Moon continuously. Each impact can fracture grains, melt a minute amount of material and redistribute dust. Repeated bombardment comminutes the original fragments and churns the uppermost soil. This process, often called impact gardening, mixes mature regolith with the ray deposit and progressively weakens the sharp boundary between them.
Micrometeorite impacts also alter the optical properties of individual grains. A surface that once consisted largely of freshly broken, reflective particles becomes a mixture of finer, repeatedly shocked and coated material. The change is gradual and depends on exposure and local conditions, so two rays of similar apparent brightness need not have exactly the same age.

Solar-wind and radiation effects
The solar wind delivers charged particles to the exposed lunar surface. Together with radiation-driven chemical changes, this irradiation modifies minerals and contributes to optically darker, spectrally mature regolith. NASA identifies solar-wind exposure and micrometeorite bombardment as the principal agents in the space-weathering process that makes rays fade.
As the ray material darkens and the neighboring ground also evolves, the reflectance difference shrinks. At first, a ray may be obvious even in a small telescope. Later, only portions with unusually favorable lighting or stronger compositional contrast may remain detectable. Eventually, the pattern can become difficult to distinguish from ordinary variations in the lunar surface.
Later impacts and overlap
Fresh craters can overprint older rays, while older ejecta can cross or partially cover a younger deposit. New impacts also break up and redistribute the original ray material. In a crowded region, overlap makes the radial pattern less complete and complicates attempts to assign every bright streak to one crater.
Tycho and Copernicus: classic ray craters
Tycho’s strongly preserved rays
Tycho is one of the most recognizable ray craters because its bright ejecta remains conspicuous across the lunar surface. NASA uses Tycho as an example of a relatively young crater whose rays have not yet faded into the background. The available canonical descriptions do not establish one single precise age that should be treated as settled here, so the useful observation is morphological: Tycho retains a high-contrast, extensive ray system.
When examining Tycho, look for broad streaks extending well beyond the crater, bright material crossing darker terrain and secondary-crater groupings that follow radial directions. The system is visually strong, but its brightness still reflects both the freshness of the ejecta and the terrain over which it lies.

Copernicus’s enormous ray reach
Copernicus is about 93 kilometers in diameter, according to NASA’s 2005 description. NASA reported in 2010 that its ejecta rays extend more than 500 kilometers from the impact site. That scale illustrates why a ray is not simply a narrow line immediately adjacent to a crater: fine ejecta can be distributed across a region many times wider than the crater itself.
Copernicus is useful for studying ray extent, while Tycho is especially useful for seeing a bright, well-preserved system. Their appearance should not be reduced to a simple ranking of which crater is “younger.” Differences in target material, lighting, overlapping impacts and image processing affect how prominent any ray appears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do bright rays prove that a crater is young?
No. Bright rays usually indicate relatively immature surface material, but they do not provide a universal numerical age. A bright deposit can be young because it was recently excavated, compositionally bright because of the material it contains, or both. The surrounding terrain also controls contrast.
A sensible interpretation uses several observations together:
- Albedo contrast: Is the ray substantially brighter than the adjacent ground, or only slightly different?
- Radial extent: Does the streak system extend far from the crater in coherent directions?
- Secondary craters: Are there chains or clusters of small craters along the same corridors?
- Composition: Is the material highlands-rich, mare-derived or otherwise different from the surface beneath it?
- Degradation: Have later impacts interrupted, buried or mixed the streaks?
These clues support a relative chronology: a sharply preserved, high-contrast system is generally less mature than a faint, disrupted one in comparable terrain. They do not turn ray brightness into a precise stopwatch that works identically everywhere on the Moon.

How to observe and identify a ray system
Start with the crater, not the brightest line
Locate the crater at the center of the suspected pattern, then trace several streaks outward. Genuine rays should tend to radiate from the same source, although some may be hidden by shadows, topography or later deposits. A single isolated bright patch is not enough to identify a ray.
Compare images under different lighting
Low Sun angles emphasize relief and can make the ejecta blanket and secondary craters easier to see. Higher Sun angles often make albedo differences more apparent. Comparing images taken under different illumination helps separate a true reflectance contrast from a temporary shadow or viewing effect.
Check for crossing and overprinting
If two ray systems overlap, follow each streak back toward its likely source. A younger ray may cross an older one and remain brighter, while an older system may survive only as faint segments between later impacts. The apparent boundary can therefore change along the same radial line.
What “fading” does—and does not—mean
Fading does not mean that the ejecta has evaporated or been swept away. It means that the material’s optical contrast has declined. Grains are broken, mixed and altered; later deposits may cover parts of the original streak; and the surrounding surface also changes. The ray can remain physically present in the upper regolith while becoming visually inconspicuous.
This distinction explains why a crater can retain geological evidence of an ejecta system even after its bright spokes are difficult to see in ordinary photographs. Specialized spectral measurements, high-resolution images and careful mapping can reveal differences that are subtle in visible-light views.
A practical comparison framework for ray systems
| Feature | What to examine | What it can indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness contrast | How strongly the streak differs from nearby ground | Relative immaturity, compositional contrast, or both |
| Radial reach | Distance and continuity of streaks from the crater | How widely ejecta was distributed; Copernicus exceeds 500 km |
| Secondary craters | Chains, clusters and alignment along rays | Ballistic ejecta corridors from the primary impact |
| Target terrain | Highlands-rich material versus dark mare basalt | Whether composition enhances or suppresses visible contrast |
| Surface degradation | Breaks, overlaps, burial and impact gardening | How much the original pattern has been modified |
Using all five axes is more reliable than judging a crater from one photograph or one brightness measurement. The same physical deposit can look dramatic in one setting and modest in another.
The key idea to remember
Lunar crater rays are impact ejecta laid down in radial patterns, sometimes accompanied by secondary craters. They start bright because fresh or compositionally distinctive material reflects more light than mature regolith. Solar-wind irradiation and micrometeorite bombardment gradually alter and mix the grains, reducing the reflectance contrast until the rays blend into the background. Their brightness is valuable evidence about relative surface maturity, but composition, terrain and later impacts must always be considered before assigning an age.
