LocalSend sends files and messages directly between nearby devices on the same reachable Wi-Fi or wired LAN. It does not require a LocalSend account, cloud relay, or internet connection for a local transfer. Devices discover one another on the network, then the sender connects to the chosen recipient over HTTPS; each device creates its TLS/SSL certificate on the fly. The result is private, cross-platform sharing, provided both devices can reach each other and the recipient and endpoints are trusted.
What LocalSend is and what “peer-to-peer” means here
LocalSend is a free, open-source application for sharing files and messages with nearby devices. Its official project description identifies a local-network design: the payload moves between the participating devices rather than through a LocalSend-operated cloud server. The application uses a REST API for communication and HTTPS to protect the connection.
In practical terms, “peer-to-peer” means your phone, computer, tablet or other supported device communicates with the selected peer over the local network. A separate LocalSend account is not part of the basic workflow, and a LocalSend internet service is not needed to broker the transfer. A router or access point may still be involved as the network hardware that lets the devices reach one another; that hardware is infrastructure, not a LocalSend relay.

How one LocalSend transfer works
The process has four logical phases: installation, local discovery, recipient selection and an encrypted data exchange.
1. Install the app on both devices
Install LocalSend from the appropriate app store or package manager on the sending and receiving devices. The official download matrix lists channels for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Fire OS. The project recommends those distribution channels because LocalSend does not include an automatic update mechanism; updates therefore depend on the store or package manager you use.
2. Put the devices on a reachable network
Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network or wired LAN segment, and make sure that segment permits device-to-device traffic. “Same Wi-Fi” is not enough if the network is configured to isolate clients. Guest networks and access points with client isolation can allow internet access while blocking one local device from contacting another.

However, Wi-Fi hardware or another local network is required: “offline” means LocalSend can operate without an internet connection, not that it can communicate with no network at all.
3. Discover nearby peers
LocalSend advertises and discovers nearby peers through its local communication protocol. Once discovery succeeds, the receiving device appears in the sender’s list. Discovery is a separate step from file delivery: a device can be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi yet remain invisible if the operating system withholds local-network permission or the network blocks peer traffic.

4. Select content and a recipient
On the sending device, choose photos, videos, documents, folders or text, then select the discovered recipient. The recipient may need to approve the incoming transfer, depending on the device and its LocalSend settings. Verify the device name before accepting; encryption protects the connection, but it cannot correct a mistaken recipient choice.
5. Transfer over HTTPS
The payload then travels directly across the local network over HTTPS. According to the project README, each device generates its TLS/SSL certificate on the fly. This encrypts the connection while the data is in transit between the two participating devices; LocalSend is not uploading the payload to a central relay first.

What encryption protects—and what it does not
The project’s README states that all data is sent securely over HTTPS and that the TLS/SSL certificate is generated on the fly on each device. The official site describes the protection model as end-to-end encryption, with only the sender and recipient able to access the files. That is the product’s stated model, and it should be understood together with the limits of endpoint security.
Protection during transit
HTTPS encrypts the connection between the sending and receiving LocalSend instances. Someone who can observe ordinary traffic on the local network should not receive the file contents simply by capturing unencrypted packets. The per-device certificate generation is part of how LocalSend establishes its encrypted session without relying on a cloud certificate service.
Protection does not make an endpoint trustworthy
Encryption cannot protect a device that is already compromised. Malware, a malicious local user with access to the device, an unlocked screen or an application with permission to read the received file can expose data after delivery. The same applies to the sender: selecting the wrong discovered device sends the encrypted payload to the wrong endpoint.

For sensitive material, confirm the recipient identity, keep both operating systems and LocalSend installations current, and accept transfers only when you recognize the request. HTTPS also does not make an unsafe network safe in every respect; it protects the LocalSend connection, while other local-network activity may remain exposed.
Privacy characteristics of the local design
No account is required for the basic workflow
LocalSend’s normal local transfer does not require registration or login. There is no account profile that must be linked to the devices before they can exchange a file.
No LocalSend cloud copy
The files are not uploaded to a LocalSend cloud relay as part of the local workflow. They remain on the local network while being transferred. This can be useful for large media files, private documents or locations where internet service is unavailable, but it does not remove the need to manage local backups and storage yourself.
Open-source implementation
LocalSend is open source, so its implementation and protocol materials can be inspected publicly. Open source improves transparency, but it is not a guarantee that every installation is secure: use trusted distribution channels, update the app and operating system, and consider the security of both endpoints.
Platform support and first-time setup
LocalSend supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Fire OS through the project’s listed stores or package managers. The interface differs slightly by platform, but the network sequence is the same.

- Install from a supported channel. Use the app store or package manager listed for your operating system rather than an unofficial repackaged installer.
- Launch LocalSend on both devices. Keep the app open while testing discovery, and ensure the devices are awake and connected to the intended Wi-Fi or LAN.
- Review local-network permissions. If the device is on macOS or iOS and does not appear, enable Local Network permission for LocalSend in the operating system’s privacy settings, then restart discovery.
- Check the network profile. Avoid guest Wi-Fi for testing. On managed networks, ask whether client isolation or a firewall rule blocks device-to-device traffic.
- Send a small test item. Choose a non-sensitive photo or text message first, confirm the recipient name, accept the transfer on the other device and verify where the item was saved.
Because there is no automatic update mechanism, periodically check the relevant store or package manager for updates on each platform. Keeping only one device updated can leave the pair running different versions and complicate troubleshooting.
Why a device may not appear
Local Network permission is disabled
On macOS and iOS, the project’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends enabling Local Network permission when a device is not visible. Open the operating system’s privacy or app-permission settings, allow LocalSend to access the local network, then close and reopen the app.
The devices are on isolated networks
Two devices can show the same Wi-Fi name while being separated by guest-network rules, VLAN boundaries or client isolation. Move both to the same ordinary LAN, temporarily test with a trusted home network, or ask the network administrator whether peer-to-peer traffic is blocked.
A firewall is blocking local traffic
Desktop firewalls can allow internet access while denying LocalSend’s local connections. Check the firewall’s application rules and permit LocalSend on the private or trusted network profile. Do not broadly disable firewall protection on an untrusted network; make the narrowest rule that permits the required local communication.

Discovery requires both LocalSend instances to be running and connected. Wake the receiving device, bring the app to the foreground, confirm its Wi-Fi connection and refresh the peer list. If the device changes networks, reconnect both ends to the same segment before testing again.

Where received files go and what the recipient controls
LocalSend transfers the selected content; the destination device controls how and where that content is stored. Folder locations and approval behavior can vary by operating system and by the app’s settings. Check the receiving device’s configured save location before sending a large batch, and verify the result with a small test file.
For privacy, treat an approval prompt as a security decision rather than a routine click. Confirm the sender identity and the file type before accepting. If an unexpected request appears, decline it and investigate the network or device that initiated it.
LocalSend compared with other sharing models
The most useful comparison is architectural rather than a claim that one product is universally better. The following table uses the decision axes that affect a real transfer.

Choose LocalSend when the devices are nearby and can join the same reachable network, and when avoiding a cloud upload is important. Choose a cloud or messaging workflow when the recipient is remote or the devices cannot share a local network.
Common misconceptions
“Offline” does not mean “wireless-free”
LocalSend needs a communication path between the devices. That can be a Wi-Fi network or wired LAN; it does not require an internet route, but it cannot transfer through empty air with no local network.
“Encrypted” does not mean “anonymous”
The network connection is encrypted, yet the devices still know which local peers they are contacting, and the receiving operating system stores the accepted content. Encryption limits interception of the transfer; it does not erase device logs, file metadata or user actions.
“Nearby” does not guarantee the correct recipient
Discovery lists reachable peers, not necessarily the person you intended. Confirm the device name and the recipient before sending confidential material.

Bottom line
LocalSend is peer-to-peer in the practical sense that files and messages move directly between nearby devices on the same reachable local network. Its local architecture avoids a LocalSend cloud relay and account, while HTTPS and per-device, on-the-fly TLS/SSL certificates protect the transfer in transit. The security boundary still includes network configuration, operating-system permissions, recipient verification and the trustworthiness of both endpoints.
