Live TV streaming delivers a channel’s current, scheduled programming over the internet. Instead of choosing a single title from a library, you tune in to a channel and watch what is airing—much as you would with cable or broadcast TV. You need internet access and a device supported by the service, but not necessarily a cable subscription or a separate streaming stick.

What does “live TV streaming” mean?

It is television programming sent to viewers over an internet connection as a live or linear channel stream. The channel follows a schedule, so you join the program that is currently airing rather than selecting every show or movie individually. In the United States, services may offer paid packages of streaming channels, free ad-supported channels, or a mix of live channels and on-demand video.

The Federal Communications Commission describes virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs) as providers offering consumers “a package of streaming linear channels.” That is useful regulatory context for some channel-package services, not a universal definition of every service that streams live video. U.S. law defines “video programming” as programming provided by, or generally considered comparable to programming provided by, a television broadcast station; that legal definition does not by itself explain every consumer use of live TV streaming. See the U.S. Code, Title 47, § 522 and the FCC’s 2024 proceeding.

How is live TV different from on-demand video?

With a live channel, the program schedule determines what is on; you can tune in while a program is already in progress or join at its scheduled start. With on-demand video, you choose a particular title and start it when you want. Some services combine both formats, offering scheduled channels alongside a library of selectable shows or movies. The FCC distinguishes streaming linear-channel packages from on-demand categories such as advertising-based, subscription, and transactional video on demand.

How does live TV streaming work?

A provider makes its channel stream available through an app or website. You open that service on a compatible device, connect to the internet, and select a channel. The internet connection carries the stream to your device; it replaces the traditional cable feed for that service, but it does not eliminate the need for an internet connection.

The exact connection requirements depend on the provider, video quality, and how many people or devices are streaming at once. For example, Hulu’s terms require high-speed broadband and say HD playback or concurrent streams may need more bandwidth. Streaming may also count toward an internet plan’s data usage. Those are provider-specific conditions, not a universal bandwidth threshold for all live TV services. See Hulu’s additional terms.

What do you need to watch live TV over the internet?

  • An internet connection: It must be sufficient for the service and the quality of video you want to watch.
  • A supported device: Depending on the provider, this may be a computer, phone, tablet, smart TV, or connected-TV device.
  • Access to the service: Some channel packages require a subscription; other linear channels may be free and ad-supported.

A streaming stick is one possible way to watch on a TV, not a universal requirement. Hulu, for example, lists computers, phones, tablets, and supported connected-TV devices, including select Fire TV and Fire TV Stick models. If your TV or another device is already supported, you may not need to buy additional hardware. Compatibility changes, so check the provider’s current device list. Hulu’s service page is at Hulu + Live TV.

Do you need cable to stream live TV?

No. A live-TV streaming service delivers its channels over the internet rather than through a traditional cable feed. You still need internet access, a supported device, and any subscription the service requires. You can also use internet streaming alongside cable or broadcast TV; the options are not mutually exclusive.

What can vary by service and location?

A service’s name or category does not guarantee that it includes a particular lineup or business model. Channel availability, local stations, regional sports, blackouts, device restrictions, and subscription terms can differ. Even within one provider, the available programming may depend on where you watch. Hulu says its live TV offering is available in the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, and that programming may be subject to regional availability, blackouts, and device restrictions. Check a provider’s availability tool for your location and review its current terms before subscribing.

Playback and recording features vary too. Hulu says it creates temporary recordings to support pause, rewind, and fast-forward. That example does not establish what another provider offers, how long recordings remain available, or whether a particular plan includes a DVR feature.

How to compare live TV streaming options

Before choosing a service, check the current offer for your location. Focus on the details that affect what you can actually watch and how you plan to watch it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Channels and local stations: Confirm that the channels and local broadcasts you want are available where you live.
  • Sports and regional rights: Check which events are included, whether blackouts or regional restrictions apply, and whether you need a paid add-on.
  • Total cost: Look beyond an advertised introductory offer. Check the recurring price, when any promotion ends, applicable taxes or fees, and the cost of add-ons.
  • Devices and simultaneous streams: Confirm that your devices are supported and that the number of concurrent streams suits your household.
  • Recording and playback controls: Check whether the plan supports recording, pausing, rewinding, or fast-forwarding, and review any storage or retention limits.
  • Live and on-demand mix: Decide whether you want scheduled channels, a selectable library, or both.

Lineups, prices, supported devices, sports rights, and plan terms can change. Verify current details with the provider rather than relying on an old channel list or promotion.
